The Great American Food & Music Fest Is Today!

It's a beautiful day in Mountain View, California, where today at Shoreline Amphitheatre, the first-ever Great American Food & Music Fest will take off.
Three generations of the Bracewell family drove their Southside Market smoker truck all the way from Elgin, "the Sausage Capitol of Texas." Half a ton of Barney Greengrass smoked salmon arrived from New York, and Gary Greengrass is slicing it up. Katz's Deli, Anchor Bar Buffalo Wings, Tony Luke's Cheesesteaks and Roast Pork, Pink's Hot Dogs—the list goes on and on. Plus appearances from Bobby Flay, Guy Fieri, and a number of Bay Area chefs. The Chronicle called us "The United States of Yum"—and that's just about right.
The Serious Eats team will be out in force, and we hope you'll come join us. Tickets are still available at the Shoreline box office. We hope to see you there!

Those bagels look like Wonderbread.

The festival was quite a bust.
My cousin and I went, our names werent on the Will Call.
As we were in line, we heard people complaining that the payment system was down and no one was getting any food.
We eventually got in but the lines to get ANY food were gigantic! Definitely could have been better organized, with a contingency plan for the payment system.
droostring at 7:37PM on 06/13/09
An excellent idea, with far reaching demand given the thousands of people that showed up.
However, HORRIBLE execution.
First the whole payment wrist band thing failed right off the bat. whoops.
Then, the food lines were horrendously long, with no sense of order. Each vendor had only one tent, with lines that snaked in every which direction. I waited in line for almost 2 hours to get halfway (if even) through the line to the Philly Cheesesteaks before giving up and joining the hoardes of people at the ticket office demanding a refund.
The other stories I heard in the refund line included: The Pastrami sandwich vendor ran out of food, and after a 2 hour wait, people who were *that close* to their food were told that there wasnt any left and that they would have to wait for 3 hours to have a new batch of pastrami ready. The line was equally as long for Pinks, the desserts, etc.
If you wanted to pay $40 for no wait for beer, this was your place. Oh yeah, and the ice cream was in decent supply too since they had multiple booths around selling it.
As for the "music" part of the whole thing, I didnt hear any.
I was really looking forward to this, but in the end it was just 4 hours of time wasted. At least I got my money back (well, except for the nonrefundable parking).
skunn at 8:33PM on 06/13/09
It was a pretty uneven experience.
No crowd control, no order to the lines, no communication. We had 1 dish, the brisket, which was fabulous. We waited in line for about 10 minutes for the bagels only to be told the wristbands were no longer working and we had to get in another line to get our cash back from those so we could wait in another line to purchase food. That was when we decided to leave. We did get our event price refunded which was good. All told we would go again if it was a MUCH larger venue. The people we talked to said the various vendors were not expecting the crowds that were there and it was pretty obvious from the start that the event was MUCH bigger than the Shoreline is capable of holding.
dwnie at 8:55PM on 06/13/09
Jeez! A class of pre-schoolers could have done a better job organizing this festival than the producers: Serious Eats and The Agency Group.. If this event had happened in Japan, the head organizers (that's you, SeriousEats.com!!!) would have already committed suicide, and that's with 4 hours still left in the event (not suggesting that the festival organizers need to take such drastic measures).
But even worse than the completely boneheaded planning and execution were these two astonishing and inexcuseable food crimes:
First, they didn't bring in the bread that Katz's uses -- they had an inferior rye that tasted more like whole wheat. Second and more importantly, they did not have Katz's spicy deli mustard -- they only had Heinz Yellow Mustard. Serving a pastrami sandwich with yellow mustard is like taking fresh pasta and using ketchup as the sauce. Why not put out some Miracle Whip while you're at it?
At least there is some rationale for totally botching the event (seriouseats.com is not an event planner), but there is no excuse for seriouseats.com to screw up the mustard. (Insert "food fest just doesn't cut the mustard" jokes here).
If the leaders of seriouseats.com have any sense of responsibility and/or possess cojones, the will be a huge apology in 96pt bold type on the front of the home page within the next hour.

this was a crazy bad event. (which i had been looking forward to since it was first blogged about on serious eats.) i have never had such an atrocious experience at any public venue previously -- and i mean never. we waited in line over an hour just to enter the festival. (and we had already purchased tickets! as had everyone else in line.) also, we couldn't even use our wrist bands for our 1 "free" meal or even use cash, since many of the vendors didn't have change. (this issue was eventually resolved.) after waiting in line approximately 40 minutes without moving for the katz deli sandwich, we finally decided to cut our losses and split and eat out. just terrible, terrible, terrible.
n00dle at 9:27PM on 06/13/09
WORST event I've ever attended. It's ashame, I really wanted to like this too.
Upon arriving, we waited over an hour to enter Shoreline. Then, it was about 1.5 hours to get some food. There was no organization, the lines were chaotic, and the food was way overpriced.
I finally got some Anchor bar wings after almost a 3 hour wait in line (with a crying baby), and they were UNDERCOOKED. I wanted to order a beer to go with the wings, but they said I had to wait in a DIFFERENT line for the beer!!
Come on people, this is a Food Festival. Waiting in line for *3* hours to get what you came to the festival for is BIG TIME FAIL.
What could have been a great festival turned into the biggest waste of time and money I've ever experienced.
mikevoyt at 9:42PM on 06/13/09
About an hour and a half into the event, the entire payment/scanning system went down, so nobody was able to purchase food. There was a 1 – 2 hour wait – about 200 people - on every food line (eventually they started taking cash).
Apparently, the event organizers had never heard of the concept of "math." They set the whole thing up in the Shoreline concrete snack area (which is about 50 feet wide in most places), with tents of food on both sides, and useless Comcast, Best Buy, etc. kiosks in the middle. If you HAVE heard of math and assume that a person in a line takes up 1 foot from front to back (and they likely take up more), and if you have a line coming from each of the tents opposite one another, you can have no more than 25 people on each line before the back of one bumps into the back of the other.. Now put a 10 x 10 kiosk in the middle, and you can only have 20 on each side without the lines bumping into the kiosk. Now ttry putting 200 in place of those 20, and you are about 180 short of space on each line. And instead of 1 line on each side, put 3 lines on each side -- you now have 1080 people curving randomly off of the back of the main lines in front of the two foods stands. There were no stanchions, no ropes, no barriers, just a big disorganized mess – it looked like the Republican party!
It was so bad that they finally gave in and started a line for refunds. It was right next to the ticket purchase lines, so as we waited for our refunds, we told the people not to go in and waste $35 per person – they could get 15 double-doubles at In-N-Out Burger. Some listened, and some people didn’t, even when I said “if you insist on wasting money, just give me $20 and you at least are $15 ahead.” (They were not amused, but I was.) Eventually, the refund line was very long, and the sales line began evaporating. And to the organizer's credit, they gave full refunds for both the ticket costs AND the $15 parking fee. So I will put 1 ipoint n the plus column for the organizers. Unfortunately, they have a trillion points in the minus column, so they have some catching up to do.
nmeyrowitz at 9:50PM on 06/13/09
I live in the bay area and didn't even hear of this event until a couple of days ago - where was the advance advertising? Also, knowing the event was at shoreline (horrible venue) we decided to skip. Given all the other reviews that seems to be a wise decision! Hold it at Golden Gate Park next time and advertise and we will definitely go!!
jkkahn at 10:04PM on 06/13/09
Wait. nmeyrowitz, You were given a refund on your parking fee?
How? I was told to talk to someone as we exit the parking lot...
which was a man who was disgruntled and angry at me.
I eventually gave up trying to get a refund and just left.
I paid 15 bucks for a bagel with lox...fabulous
droostring at 10:10PM on 06/13/09
The refund line got so long (3 lines, many, many deep) that they just decided to stop issuing refunds, offering no reason other than "We can't just give refunds all day". I kid you not, that is what the events manager announced. I hope more people find this page and post their experiences, as I'll be including it in my credit card dispute. Thanks everyone!

Say it aint' so!
I had forgotten that Serious Eats was the blog of Ed Levine, my hero when it comes to searching out real NY food (I'm a New Yorker transplanted to San Francisco).
How could you let them serve Yellow Mustard with Katz's pastrami. Did they give you a lobotomy when you landed at SFO?
Ed, I'm pretty sure that California has an extradition treaty with NYC, so if you turn yourself into the Mountain View police, they can get you on a plane and in front of a judge by Monday morning. I am confident you will be convicted (you really should just take it like a man and plead guilty), and I am writing a friend of the court brief that suggests you be sentenced to a year's worth of pastrami sandwiches with mayonnaise, washed down by egg creams into which the festival organizers have put eggs.
nmeyrowitz at 10:32PM on 06/13/09
droostring:
As with most of the event, the parking refund was very well organized ;-) To get the refund, you had to drive out of the parking lot and then drive in and get the refund from someone at the entrance, rather than the exit). If you lived in Bizarro World, you would have known.
nmeyrowitz at 10:36PM on 06/13/09
The can't-get-any-food characteristic of this event has a bright side, I never in a million years though this event would be a weight-loss experience!
nmeyrowitz at 10:43PM on 06/13/09
this was one of the most memorable events i've ever attended.......for being an unmitigated DISASTER.
we stood in line FOREVER and got ZERO food. I wish someone would have started a chant saying " we want food.we want food. we want food". It was that bad. I waited in the refund line FOREVER too..out of principle.
amandaac at 10:43PM on 06/13/09
The worst event I have ever been too ... nothing even comes close. My experience is like what everyone else posted above. Some additional items that were not already mentioned - staff smoking marijuana. Sure would be nice if they tried to organize lines instead of letting them go out of control. What started as one line ended up being 3 lines, of course that was after people in the first line already waited for 2 hours. And why were staff in the back eating pastrami sandwiches and buffalo wings while paying customers were waiting 2+ hours for them. This was a total disaster.
thenurd at 11:00PM on 06/13/09
My party and I felt that the entire event was completely unorganized,
due to the following factors:
1) It took about an hour to get from the parking lot to the front entrance
2) The wristband system did not work, all systems went down and most
vendors did not have cash for change (early in the day)
3) Tony Luke's Cheese-steak booth did not have any food when we
arrived at the festival
4) We felt that the entire event was totally unorganized, thus causing
chaos at every vendor's booth, we had no idea which line went to where
and everyone was confused
5) Katz Deli was complete chaos, we were told the wait was going to be
more than 1.5hrs long, as there was no more pastrami to serve (we did
not hear this from an employee, but from a lady who was at the front
of the line)
6) Junior's Cheesecake was sold out
7) The lines for all the big vendors was completely ridiculous we
ended up eating Ice Cream the entire day
Who can I talk to about a refund????
mainevent at 11:09PM on 06/13/09
Credit card dispute - great idea, roberts. I can't let them charge me $90 for being tortured by standing in line, out of principle.
Oh, BTW I should mention - one of our friends waited in line 2+ hours for Katz's, and the RAN OUT of pastrami just before he reached the counter. They wisely took off after that.
Our other friends, they arrived, then went straight for the refund line. Apparently, that line was longer than the entrance line by the time they got there.
mikevoyt at 11:15PM on 06/13/09
Does anyone know who we can contact for a refund?
mainevent at 11:15PM on 06/13/09
Most unorganized event ever... I came so hungry too...
I want a refund as well. Let me know who I talk to.

I just attended the Great American Food and Music Fiasco (oops! was that supposed to be Festival?) at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. It was such a disappointment to attend an event that I had looked forward to for weeks only to be totally inconvenienced by the lack of planning and shoddy execution.
As we were walking from our car to the venue in mid-afternoon, patrons walking back to their cars were warning us not go. They said that lines for food were hours long and some food was running low or gone altogether. I should have listened and turned around because not only were the lines ridiculously long and some food running low, there were way more people than I had ever anticipated. It was pretty much shoulder to shoulder. No wonder there was a problem getting food to everyone. I did see Guy Fieri's first demo (which was well done) squinting through at least a hundred heads.
We decided we needed to use our "free" food coupon somehow and found that the PB&J line was quite small. What the heck. I love PB&J. But what I got was dense bread covered in a oily paste that had a vague hint of peanuts coupled with strawberry slime. After one bite, my husband and both tossed what was left in the garbage. What a waste of food, my money and my time.
After such experiences we decided to leave because it wasn't comfortable or inviting enough to stay for the remainder of the day's events. It wasn't until I was back in the parking lot that I found out from another attendee that refunds were being given. If there had been any information about that back at the venue I definitely would have asked to be refunded my $70.00.
debbieb at 11:26PM on 06/13/09
I signed up for seriouseats.com for the sole purpose of expressing my disgust with the shoddy, unprofessional, nightmare that was the "Great American Food and Music Fest." There was nothing, "Great," no "food," no "fest" and the only "music" I heard was the sound of 20,000 people cursing their miserable lives. Just to reiterate, I had one of the worst experiences of my life today.
I showed up at the Shoreline and was immediately directed into distant overflow parking as I hiked in past row after row of empty parking. I also enjoyed the half-hour line to cross a crosswalk to get the the event surrounded by a chorus of people asking "what is this line for?" and "is this the line for the food?" That's something you don't expect to hear in a parking lot! As I walked toward the event, I noticed people leaving. That should have set off an ALARM in my head. Once I got in, I found I was trapped between several lines all in different directions and no one knew what any of the lines were for. I got in a line that I thought was for a Pink's hot dogs or maybe T-mobile, it was hard to tell. I waited there for an hour growing hungrier and hungrier. I guess skipping breakfast in anticipation of the awesome food was not a great ideal. I became so desperate, I sent my husband with all of our money to find anything edible, he came back with an ad and a seasoning packet. At that point I decided to cut my losses and got out of there.
Thanks, Seriouseats, for one of the worst days of my life.
bayareafoodaholic at 11:32PM on 06/13/09
1. Tried to pick up a discount pack of 4 tickets early, was told that they were sold out. Not sure how that can happen when regular tickets were still available.
2. Waited in line for 3 hours for a cheesesteak, some people waited almost 4.
3. Tried to get a refund during the 3 hour wait, some were given...but eventually they stopped and gave people a # to call (don't know what it is offhand).
4. Some of the staff just left their post. I could have walked off with a roll of probably 1000 food tickets ($10/ea) if I had wanted to.
5. Cheesesteak was pretty "meh". Pretty much any cheesteak shop in the area serves much better.
6. Cheesecake sold out. Smores sold out.
Basically I've gone to concerts at Shoreline and had a much better dining experience with the generic event food (pizza, hot dogs, fries, etc).
kahnoodie at 11:35PM on 06/13/09
They told us to call 650 - 967 - 3000 (I think that's right, someone chime in if it isn't, it's also listed on this website http://www.livenation.com/venue/shoreline-amphitheatre-at-mountain-view-tickets) and talk to Tim Anderson if we did not see our ticket prices refunded back to us. We gave one of the event coordinators our tickets and she said we would be refunded. Too bad we didn't the parking fee back too!
ucscchick at 11:41PM on 06/13/09
I too had great expectations for this event. I would be angrier if not for this complete and epic failure being so astounding I can't help but laugh. Angry people were leaving as I walked in a 3pm. The payment system broke down. You could smell delicious food all around you, but you could not get any. I feel bad for the people that paid 110.00 for all you can eat and spent 4 hours in food lines for nothing. I at least got a bagel for my 20.00 admission. I have never seen any event crash and go down if flames so spectactularly. The really bad thing is that alcohol was readily available but no food and most people didn't eat before coming. Oh boy.
sfeater at 11:42PM on 06/13/09
Actually the only good thing about the event was the fact that alcohol was readily available. It tempered my mood from being extremely pissed off, to just "this sucks ass but whatever, I'll eat something when I get home".
mikevoyt at 11:50PM on 06/13/09
Thanks to ucscchick for posting the info, I greatly appreciate it!
I just called and they told me to mail in my tickets and expect a turnaround in about 2 weeks.
mainevent at 11:51PM on 06/13/09
This fiasco isn't surprising to me. How can you expect to feed slow food to masses of people?
The Twitter comments are scathing, and those are from professional food writers.
So glad I spent the afternoon in a park with the people from TLC Ranch—pastured pork/beef burgers, sausages, and organic everything.
Very sorry to hear all you people got burned. I bet the insurance for this event doesn't cover bad planning.
tanabutler at 11:57PM on 06/13/09
Thanks ucscchick - I called 650.967.3000 and they said I could get a refund if I mailed them a photocopy of the tickets. I told them I was so disgusted with the event that I threw the tickets away. They said in that case, I'll need to call back on Monday.
So it sounds like if you still have the tickets you should be able to easily get a refund; otherwise, call on Monday and hopefully you'll be able to show them your credit charge or something to get a refund.
mikevoyt at 11:59PM on 06/13/09
It was a disaster, but interestingly, while there were people who were quite openly angry, most of the people I talked to in the very slow lines all felt it was something worth trying again if they completely rethink it.
Tony Luke's- had no gas for first hour & and half- then rushed the food once they had power, and it showed.
First stop was Southside Market, got to front of line just as computers died and they couldn't take cash yet. Very nice guy at window handed out brisket to hold crowd over.
I heard Katz ran out of pastrami, but they were serving again by 7pm. Really good.
Burgermeister had fastest line.
S'mores were fantastic, so were truffles. I also made it in time for cheesecake but getting low and despite that were selling multiple slices to single customers in to-go containers- clearly a mistake.
Much of the staff were locals from CCA and had little knowledge of the food they were preparing- they were completely overwhelmed.
CatBoy at 12:33AM on 06/14/09
Hi Ed,
What happened? We were just at the festival today, amongst 3000 others, and we felt short-changed. As bay area local who frequented Shoreline Ampitheatre for sold-out concerts, this event was a catastrophe. Organization wise, it was chaotic. To summarize:
1. The wait to get in (even for ticket holders) was 60+ minutes, snaking from the dusty parking lot. It was apparent at the gate that slow entrance was attributed to wristband-slapping process to each ticket holders.
2. Once in, there's another 40+ minutes wait to put deposit on wristband at ironically called "Fast Pass Stand". No one understand how the "hi tech" wristband works - one advised activation, others said not necessary. An agent at fast pass informed refund can be done at information booth, yet info both denied authority.
3. Then there's another 90+ minutes wait in line to order your food of choice. Since your first plate of food is included with ticket price, the choice was pretty obvious as there are only 2 vendors with a $12 price tag. We arrived at 12:20, and didn't have a single bite until 3:30. All the while, no music, drinks or announcement. Just standing in line.
4. Ofcourse, with all new technology and wired systems, there's a glitch. By the time you get to order your food, the scanning device failed. Your purchase can not go thru. Rendering waits you bear, deposits you made, stupid wristband start-up technology, major screw ups, all fruitless effort on an otherwise nice Saturday. This happens to most everyone I talked to. A lot of pissed ticket holders.
I've been to Shoreline multiple times, and I've never experienced worst. Surely the venue & employees was not the issue. Was it Live Nation got too greedy, over-selling tickets? Silly wristband technology company that doesn't work, lobbied by lowest bidder? Event organizers dropped the ball, not anticipating the outcome?
Whatever the reasons, I think all these could have been avoided by simply thinking it through. If you're going to make a rule that all first purchase will be free, you bet mass are going to swarm highest priced vendors. This was not anticipated as lines spiraled uncontrollaby at these vendors, creating little "riot" amongst by standers, ppl waiting in line and those trying to cut it. I suggest getting rid of the silly wristband rule, just good old cash.
Can I get my money back? Oh yes, there's also a line for that. It started few zip codes back and 2 days long.
anakorpa at 12:57AM on 06/14/09
I swear Disneyland lines when much faster. We waited 1.5 hours to get to the entrance @ 12:00 noon. Man, it was packed in there. All there was lines and lines. It was like cattle lines in a slaughter house. We waited 3-4hrs to get food. We opted for the BLT. OH MY GOD. They had "1", "UNO", cordon blue culinary student make the BLT sandwiches. It's a BLT, not a complex dish. As soon as I got to the order taker i asked for my BLT. "What king of Bacon do you want?" .......I DON'T CARE. It's a BLT people! As soon as I got it, it tasted horrible. My sandwich bread was dry and fell apart and I only had half a piece of bacon, what a rip off.
This place was too small for the shoreline. Many events like this go much smoothly, like the Garlic Festival.
I have never been to the shoreline before, and I will never go there again and will tell everybody else.
I hope I get my money back, I also got my parking back.
I would like o see this on the news or something, 7 on your side.
I would have a heart attack if I spent $500 PER TICKET for VIP!!!
I heard someone paid that price and NO FOOD!!!!
Good lord.
alex370 at 12:59AM on 06/14/09
i had a 2.5 hr wait for katz's pastrami (spent a whole 18 min just at the window, after giving the very slow livenation teenager our order) - it wasn't even sliced the same way as the original and the bread was not the same!!! completely unorganized. hubby had a 3 hr wait for cheesesteak. ran out of junior's cheesecake by the time i made it over at 5.
the whole event was just upsetting. i am shocked that such big names would allow themselves to be attached to such a disastrous event.
bobby flay and guy fieri should have fire their agents for talking them into such a poorly planned event.
we didn't have high expectations of the event - and yet it was still an awful experience. shame on the people who put on this event!!!
ttadrienne at 1:11AM on 06/14/09
12 minutes ago Loo L. says:
It was definitely not what we expected. Like Danny said, just to get IN to the festival took an hour, we had pre-paid tickets. We stood in line for our "free plate" (pastrami sandwiches) for 3 hours. So, needless to say, we missed out on seeing the FoodNetwork personalities that originally drew us to the event in the first place.
The lack of organization made it a nightmare all the way around. What a shame. This being the first event, with hopes of having more, the mastermind behind this has a very, very long way to go to make it successful.
This is an entry that I had posted on Yelp, prior to finding this (better) forum.)
That whole Fast Pass wrist band thingy was a total fiasco. Who ever thought that was a good idea obivously didn't do their research.
Crappy organization, lack of pre-thought and a hunger for money by the visionary of this, made this a very bad experience for us. Whoever the "worker bees" were who worked the event, very much lacked in training. There was no consistent communication between them. One "Event staff" person told one story, the other one told a different story. AND the story kept evolving.
loo lindsay at 1:15AM on 06/14/09
So, so disappointed in this event. Totally agree that the execution was terrible. Like everyone else we waited an hour to get in, then about another to get BBQ from some very "happy" workers who snapped at us for asking questions about how to order our food.
The payment system was so dumb... stand in line to put money on a band then stand in a longer line to buy food. Oh then have the whole system go down 90 minutes into the event. Then they don't even communicate to all the vendors to take cash or credit card. Perfect!
The location should have been larger and there should have been some kind of schedule printed so you know who was performing or who was doing demos. Don't know if they even did any of that.
We weren't going to try to get a refund since we were thinking this was the first event... but I actually called Live Nation (888-598-4299) and was able to get a full refund after waiting on hold for about 15 mins (what's another line?). Apparently they've been getting calls all night with people complaining. Wished we got a refund for our parking but oh well... we did get our BBQ, ice cream, and bouchons.
Did anyone even see Bobby Flay or Guy Fieri? Did they even show up?!
I hope they learn from this experience and make it better and change the location!! I had such high hopes for this event but I left SO disappointed.
cupcakegirl at 1:16AM on 06/14/09
My three friends and I also attended today's event. By now I think we can all agree that this shindig did not go over as hoped. There's unlikely to be much benefit in adding yet another voice to the chorus of those shouting "Epic Fail!" and so I won't.
Instead of complaining and pointing fingers I'd be interested in hearing some details on why things went as they did. It's unlikely that Ed Levine and Serious Eats are entirely (or even primarily) to blame. It's very possible that they had little say in the venue (perhaps no other was available?) or the wristband technology or the organization within the venue itself. Or maybe they did. We don't know and yet folks are lighting the torches and brandishing the pitchforks. It sucked. We know that. Now please chill.
So, yeah, this was a complete bust. No doubt the Serious Eats team is abundantly aware of that (and likely was long before the first irate comments were posted; Ed was there, after all). I wouldn't be surprised if they're not all sitting around a table right now, working on emptying some of the leftover kegs, revisiting the horror stories of the day and discussing how they can be avoided next time.
Would we, even after experiencing what we have, give it another chance next year? Would we be willing to hand over our time and our money for a 2nd Annual Great American Food and Music Fest? That so many people turned out for this one makes me think that there's a demand and so yes, we would. I certainly would, but only if it were evident that the organizers had learned a lot from this year's experience. Start with having a look at the suggestion above to hold it in Golden Gate Park. Good idea, that.
For the sake of the organizers, the vendors and my fellow attendees I'm very sorry that this went off as it did. But, hey, nothing ventured nothing gained. Thanks for at least trying.
VMBrasseur at 1:32AM on 06/14/09
My story:
3:05 pm Parking girl: * waves us by, without asking us to pay for parking*
My friend to parking girl : "um, gee thanks...? but if we don't pay, we can't get in..."
Parking girl: "do you want a refund?"
My friend: "no, I just parked but didn't pay"
Parking girl : "yeah, they ran out of food, so people are leaving and we're giving out refunds"
My friend: "annnd this is why I didn't want to pay for the ticket in advance"
3:06 pm Me: ..."wait, no lox?"
The amount of advertising for this event was substantial and covered all major media bases. What's funny (but not really) is that three hours in, the event had already failed miserably. And patrons, such as myself, were turned away before even stepping foot in the stadium. *I spent more time writing this, than I did at the event* I think that says it all...I still want my lox and wings :(

I will also call for a refund. I also want the 5+ hours of my life back I spent in lines! My wife and I waited 2.0 hrs at Katz to be told at the window at 7pm they just ran out of Pastrami and it would be another 45 min!!!!!
Very disappointed. The choke points were using culinary students for prep in food booths, serving drinks from food booths, underestimating supply side, no mgmt of lines, cramming food into area insufficient for volume of people. The southside folks did the best job and if the other vendors had used their methods it would have been a much better experience.
Next year we will take our $$ to a local restaurant
Greglynn at 1:32AM on 06/14/09
Both Bobby and Guy were there, and I saw them a few times. In between demonstrations and book signings they made appearances at various vendors and did their best to soothe the crowd (I think Bobby even cut one of his demos short to spend more time talking to people in the audience).
When I went to Bobby's book signing later he looked about 5 years older than he had a couple hours prior; he may have been running around all day, not standing in lines, but he knew this thing fell apart.

I know I already posted twice, but I realize I forgot to say this in either of those- I hope the organizers return to the drawing board, because whatever went wrong, and however much went wrong, this really was a good idea.

So, do we have to mail in our tickets or just call Live Nation now to get a full refund??? I'm confused...

Soothe your soul - here's how things go down at Katz's in New York.
http://www.mynyco.com/katzs_thatsall (also of course katzdeli.com and youtube.com/katzsdeli) I'm making a doc about the place after having designed their website in 2003 - not for all 6 years since, only 3 or 4. Their stuff is to be had in NYC, for the complete terroir experience. Good to bring a great story with you, or to leave with one: that's the greasy magic of this place.
djueat at 1:49AM on 06/14/09
And yes, I know that Katz's chef Kenny Kohn took it all seriously and went out West well-prepared...

Why did I have to go to dinner after a Food Festival?
Like many of the other people out here, this event was a disaster.
First I have to hand it to everyone in the crowd for keeping level heads when it came to interaction with each other. It was strange how we were all just sort of laughing at each other after a while. Talking to each other and laughing at this catastrophe actually kept me level headed.
Here are some other fun things that happened:
Being told at the box office that they sold out of the "Family of 4 package" when it really is just a discounted price for 4 general admission tickets. So I pay $160.00 for four tickets.
The mass confusion of what the hell this wrist band is worth.
As I eat my "Katz's" sandwich, near the stage, watching the Katz's line and the BBQ line grow and then intersect each other.
Not knowing that the sandwich I am eating at 1pm will be the last thing I eat at a food festival.
Watching people settle for a bagel and water from a fountain.
The topper was, ordering an It's It from the concessions. Getting handed a cup of ice cream. Telling the worker that this isn't It's It, It's It has chocolate and cookies. She said, "this is it." Because of exhaustion and hunger we take the ice cream.
I want my refund.

Hey...SeriousEast...Livenation....Tom Levine..organizer of the festival.
THANK YOU for embarassing me and my friends.
Thank you for ruining my reputation as a host for mentioning
to my friends that they should come to this event.
THank you for letting us wait an hour to get into the event,
Thank you for not organizing the lines and letting people cut in on the long way in...aggravating everyone.
Thank you for then introducing a cashless food pass system that was NOT tested and you used us all as guinea pigs on the DAY OF the event. WHO does that by the way???
Thank you for making everyone go in endless lines that lead to overwhelmed food vendors who ran out of food, and also didn't know to accept cash or not, because your cashless system failed and you left the vendors, and customers unprepared. (Imagine if our country went into a cashless sysem and it crashed!!!?? This was totally a metaphor for many of us)
THank you for making THOUSANDS wait in energy sapping sunny weather. We got deyhydrated and were taken to exhaustion and ultimate frustration for waiting in these neverending lines.
THank you for misdirecting us when we all found out that we could get refunds We went from stand to stand, office to office, and finally went back to the ticket aisles.
The line for refunders outnumbered those who wanted to buy tickets.
We TRIED to warn those who were buying tickets to not bother..."it's chaos'..but like blind sheep...they all were willing to burn away their cash. What a sociological statement that was...the blind leading the blind.
We were the lucky ones...we only paid 21 dollars from our 4 pack and FINALLY got our money back after waiting an hour in the return line.
I could feel and sense the outrage of those who paid 200 plus dollars for your premium packages and got nothing in return.
You can keep the 15 dollars you stole from me for parking fees.
NO THANK YOU for ever trying to invite me again.
I'm sure you'll see a whole BUNCH of your angry patrons in court.
Nice job Serious EATS and Tom Levine.
Please don't spend my 15 bucks all at once.

This is starting to sound like a broken record here, but this event was horribly planned and executed. After 4hrs in line for Katz, only to be told they ran out, was the last straw. I still have my unused food ticket. Give everyone a refund!!!
out_of_pastrami at 2:48AM on 06/14/09
Let me give another point of view on the Disaster at the Amphitheatre: I had two interests for this event. See the people prepare the food live instead of seeing them on the TV and eat the good food that I've heard about onTV and in the advertisements for this event. The entertainment: the Food Network people I saw were funny, entertaining and trying to keep everyone in good spirits, even though, they could see blood in a lot of eyes. Bobby Flay and Guy Fieri were especially good with the crowds. A real bright side for this event. Thanks Food Network people. That was the positive. Now I think it's time to complain, moan and groan about things too. I got there at a few minutes to noon. This was when the event was supposed to start. I was directed to get in the line because that was where general admission ticket holders were supposed to go. I didn't know the Amphitheatre grounds were so large until I reached the end of the line. It took another hour to get back to the front gate. Then they strapped us into the wrist bands. Staff people didn't explain anything about it except to say not to take it off. I then saw lines of people. Many lines of people. So many lines of people that all I saw was a gaggle of people. I tried to use the wrist band at a vendor-it didn't work. The worker said there wasn't enough money on the band.

This event was an embarrassment. Shoreline and/or the event management should be ashamed for wasting the time of 10,000+ people on a beautiful Saturday in June. Every line was a chaotic serpentine, wound 5 times around. The concourse surrounding the Shoreline Pavilion was a mass of people, all in line for one of the vendors, and no organization at all. Imagine Disneyland, except with no ropes, no enforcement, nobody managing the queue lines, and nobody knowing anything about what's going on, including the Shoreline people or the food vendors. Complete and utter chaos.
All the lines just blend into each other and nobody knows where they're going. You can hardly walk around because it's all just a solid line of people, waiting. I found myself in a line for a vendor that I couldn't even see! Ten minutes later, someone else told me I was in a different line, even though I hadn't moved a foot!
We had VIP tickets and thus avoided the 1 hour line just to get into the event. VIP tickets meant that we got into Shoreline early, which meant we could load up our "pay bracelets" early with cash. Problem is, the pay bracelet system crashed about an hour into the event, so we had $40 worth of cash stored into a piece of plastic that was no good after they switched to some other system. It wouldn't have mattered anyway, because every line was over an hour wait - even for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, let alone Katz Deli or Buffalo Wings. I hear that towards the midway point in the event (ie after everyone got wise and started to bail on this disaster), they started running out of cash for refunds, meaning people like myself who paid cash for their bracelets or tickets would simply be out of luck.
Anyway, after we got in and saw what a mess it was, we decided to go into the Pavilion area to wait out the lines and listen to music. We bailed on our box seats at about 3PM and had to wait in ANOTHER line for an hour just to get our $40 back from our bracelet. The ticket refund line was so mishandled that when someone did manage to get their money back, everyone else in line cheered!
This was a great idea but monumentally mishandled. I can just imagine what hot, tired, hungry crowd that Guy and Bobby had to deal with when they eventually hit the stage at 7PM (hours after we left!).I feel bad for the poor souls that paid $500+ for an "all you can eat" pass just to find out that they had to wait in 2+ hour lines for every sample, PLUS they had to wait in a 2+ hour line for a chance to get their money back!
The only lines that seemed short were the beer and beverage lines, because those were somehow separate from the festival vendors and accepted their own forms of payment. I am surprised there wasn't a series of violent confrontations, because everyone was in line for hours, drinking too much on literally an empty stomach.

I'd never before imagined that entering a Food Festival hungry could be a bag thing, but this event proved me wrong.
I waited in the Cheese Steak line for over and hour. The only reason the line was "moving" was because people were getting fed up and leaving. People in the line were getting food from sympathetic friends and loved ones bringing them nourishment to sustain them.
At the one hour mark, the husband of the woman in front of me said he went to the front to see what was going on.. There were five idle lines of customers.. a stack of sandwiches made that nobody was ordering, and just three people behind the counter actually making food. During the entire time he was up there, none of the customers at the fronts of the lines got any food. He mentioned that some people had gone through other lines twice while we had waited there.
I was so determined to stay in that damned line and get food but gave up when I heard no food was being served.
I ended up joining a friend in one of the BBQ lines. The BBQ stand had multiple lines, one had people waiting over 2 hours, another was more like a 30 minute lines.
We got to see Bobby Flay just in time to hear him say that nobody should EVER serve a burger without melting the cheese. Kinda like the sausage on my plate.
The funny thing was when I eventually needed to use the bathroom - *** NO WAITING *** I was really shocked given the attendance of this event. Probably because nobody was eating or drinking anything!!!
I did manage to get two items with no waiting: A TWELVE DOLLAR BEER and an Its-It (which I can get locally anyways).
I agree, give your money to the numerous good local Food and Music establishments in the bay area. Not these clowns.
jschlach at 4:30AM on 06/14/09
I have never seen an event so poorly executed.
With a name 'The Great American Food and Music Festival' you might expect there to be food and music, however, both of these were in short supply. When my group arrived it was pretty apparent that the whole event was complete chaos.
The first line we saw was the philly cheese steak line, and from what people were saying it looked to be 2-3 hours long. We thought that was pretty crazy so we tried to find other shorter lines, after all, one might think that at food festival you could get some food. After spending 30 minutes just trying to get around through all the zig zagging lines that intersected each other it was pretty clear that we were going to have to wait at least 2-3 hours to get something with the food tickets we got as part of admission. At this point we should have given up and left. Kudos to all those people in front of us in the cheese steak line who gave up 20 minutes prior to our eventual surrender (at least they saw it coming, we kept holding out for hope that we might get to eat something). We even got a few free tickets from some of these poor souls who just gave up and left the event frustrated.
The most bizarre thing I did see was the food bartering that went on. People trading chicken wings for a bite of a hot dog, or a piece of brisket or even some bacon samples. I'm shocked that people weren't more angry about the whole thing. Between the heat, the ridiculous lines and the incompetence of the event staff people should have been rioting. I think the utter despair is what broke people down. How can you have a food festival for foodies and so completely and utterly fail at serving food, it baffles the mind.
Next year they need to change the name to the Great American Food and Music FAIL because that's exactly what it was. Shame on the event planners. This was simply the worst experience I have ever had at a festival.

Part two: I searched the grounds and found a place to refill the wrist band. The place was down (we live in Silicon Valley for crap's sake). I found two other locations-they were down as well. But, I found that a schedule of events, a map and a food and beverage menu existed in this venue. Standing in line was good for some things, not like people who worked there gave information out. I went back to the original location to fill the wrist band and from the sixth person back heard someone up front say the whole system was down and that everyone was now taking cash and credit. There were a lot of grumbles about cutting lines and trying to get the fast disappearing food. I finally got my wings after a couple of hours.
I went to one of the events and was told by an usher that I could sit in row such and such up to the top. I went to the row and was directed by another usher to sit at the end of the row --- which was two rows in front of the designated row. Just as the event was starting, another usher came through and said all people in the row I was in, had to leave their seats and move to other seats. The only empty seats were in front of me and so I stood and watched the show. I also had to listen to the ushers personal lives and how ticketholder such and such gave them problems, etc... I felt as if I was burdening the Staff working the event.
Oh, by the way only about 50 VIP's filled the 700 odd seats that we were ran out of.
This event was totally disorganized and the Amphitheatre Staff should be hung and quartered for being rude and unhelpful.
This was a food event--who runs out of food at a food event five, six, eight hours before the event is supposed to end?? Just to be fair the stage hands and most of the Culinary Institute people, I saw were working very hard at their jobs and overall they were good humored and courteous.
I would go to this event again if the disorganized aspect of it was fixed. It's a great idea (look at all the people who were in the lines that came to this event) and can be made to work. I live in Mountain View and I am not only upset but embarrassed that a whole lot of people from out of town were treated so shabbily.
mdevil at 4:55AM on 06/14/09
I finally realized why people weren't rioting event at this event, they were simply too weak from lack of food and water.
boboplasmosis at 5:01AM on 06/14/09
Utter and complete disaster. Poorly run, poorly executed, poorly planned. An embarassment for Serious Eats, the Shoreline, and every person or organization involved with the event.
I'm personally embarrassed that I reccomended this event to quite a few of my friends and will be extremely disinclined to participate with other events that Serious Eats advertises or sponsors.
I intend to seek a full refund and urge everyone who feels like I do to register their complaints and to seek such refunds.
I cannot even imagine what sort of an apology would restore my faith.

Just an update so everyone knows: I just called the Live Nation Phone Number and they are not giving refunds as someone posted earlier said they were... The person on the phone said they had to speak to the manager, then came back and said the manager has to talk with the venue to see what happened... so obviously no one has a clue what's going on. I think the best bet is to just mail in your tickets + parking stub and try to get a FULL REFUND!
mainevent at 9:24AM on 06/14/09
A complete "Bust", I was only a little "Lucky", I got there about 11:30 and was only 120-150 people back. It took quite a while to get in because of the wrist bands. The readers were down more than operating. I could only stand it for less than 2 hours and left., and that was a round 2:00pm . The line to get in was all the way back past my parked car in the parking lot !!
I'll bet it those 3 hrs to get in. The only thing I had to eat was the Brisket/Sausage Twice !! It was very good, but REALLY SMALL portions
I usually spill more off my plate!! Never again !!!

I am one of the "fools" that paid 525 each for 2 tickets for the "all access" tickets. What a joke I have never been to a more un-organized event. I actually got so frustrated with the whole thing that we just left. I did call for a refund and am hoping Monday to speak with someone. I think elementary school kids could have put on a better event. IN fact I could have lined all these people up around my block in my neighborhood and served the food faster than this place did. I was excited to meet Guy but it was not worth the headaches and time that was wasted. I came hungry left slightly buzzed and even more hungry and most of all pissed off!!
NorCal17 at 11:06AM on 06/14/09
Horrible experience, very unprofessional. This place OVERSOLD by a mile making it a miserable experience for many people. How do you not know how many people a venue can properly handle? Lines - lines - lines. That is all my family saw. We saw very little food actually being eaten, no music, no fun. The geniuses placed the hamburger grills up wind so that all the smoke engulfed the mile long line of people waiting for their food. I think I'm going to write Bobby Flay and Guy. They too deserved better than this!
bbqeats at 11:45AM on 06/14/09
I was also disappointed with the event after having waited in line to fix a ticketing issue at Will Call. Too little food for the number of people they had at this event.
I wrote about my whole experience here:

For a refund, call LiveNation and ask to talk to customer service. They've gotten plenty of calls already and the process should be relatively fast with a confirmation code handy.
Wasn't overly impressed with the food lineup in the first place, but made the mistake of attending anyways. Line cutters need to be locked up in a room and forced to watch Bobby Flay reruns.
ckat7 at 12:26PM on 06/14/09
I can echo everything that has been expressed in these comments. You know, I should have known something was wrong when I saw that horrible hamburger graphic on their official website.
I actually woke up this morning from a nightmare of standing in endless lines leading to nowhere.
You know the one thing at the festival that was empty and convenient were the bathrooms, but that's because nobody was able to eat anything that would warrant going to the bathroom.
Had we not received a refund on our tickets and parking, major rioting from grumpy-hungry carnivores would have been imminent. Actually, one woman in front of us was crying while waiting for her refund. If my girlfriend wasn't with me, I would have been sobbing as well.

Probably one of the worst organized experiences I have ever seen. Left a bitter taste in my mouth. Nothing good to say about it. Wasted a day!!! Got the 8 tickets over the internet. Arrived at 100. Paid 15.00 for parking a mile away. First stop was for Cheesesteaks. One of the main reasons we had come. Friends I know back east rave about them. Waited in line for 2 and a half hours for Tony Luke's cheesesteak. Finally get to the front and was told they had no cheesesteaks only pork sandwiches!! WTF!!! Considering the family was starving now at 3:00pm waiting 2 hours and nothing to eat I took it. Food was dry and bland. Nothing special at all about it. Doesnt say much about Philly's best. What made it worse, while standing in line here comes Bobby Flay and Susie Fogelson, one of the V.P.'s from Food network and a judge from the Next Food Network Star. They go walking by the mob in front of Tony Lukes, smile, wave and then disappear into the back. I was expecting Bobby to say something since he was one of the hosts, address the crowd, anything... but nothing. But wait it gets better. Tony Luke then comes out from the back and starts mingling and talking with the crowd. One would think he would be in back helping the staff try and pump out more food or apologizing since it has name on it . Never happened.
But the most dissapointing thing that happened was with my 3 year old daughter who is a big Guy Fieri fan. She had gotten a wrist band that she wears like guy on her right arm and all week had talked about going to see Guy. We waited in over an hour long line for his book signing, having already bought 2 of his books. We finally get to the front Guy barely looks up at her just signs her name. My wife asked him if we could take a picture with her. Guy response was "OK but i have to keep signing" which is understandable. We go to walk around for the picture since Guy said it was Ok, but one of his people standing on the side says sorry no pictures and doesnt let my daughter get her picture. So now I have an upset 3 year old who doesnt understand why she cant get a picture with her favorite Food Tv star even though he said it was ok. That was it for us we left. We had planned on staying for Bobby Flay's signing but had enough. Went to the refund line turned in our paperwork and was told they would credit our card and got refunded on our parking.
This could have been a great experiece. Organizers should be fired or made to wait in their own lines at the event!! Venue was not prepared or staffed properly, nor the right location for something of this nature. Cal-Expo maybe or even a county fair location. Have been big Bobby and Guy supporters and have eaten at their restaurants many times. Sad to see them affiliated with this mess. Suffice to say I am pissed off!!

By far the worst experience of all time. Bought tickets online, got find out had to wait in one line ticket or no ticket. Finally get in, go to get a fast past wristband, found out they are down. Was told we can use credit or cash. Ok, then credit machines go down, had to withdraw cash from fee charging machine. Waited in line for hours just for an item and come to find they are out of cheesecake (one of the featured items on the menu). How does that happen. So, then decide to get pastrami and wings. Get in one of many lines, 3 hrs about 20 person in line. Then they run out of pastrami, hrs. wait for batch. So I said okay at least they still have wings. Come to find that wings are only at certain windows, which one I was not in line for, had to go to the back of another line. About 5 1/2 hrs. in line, and starving. Decide to get a refund and find food elsewhere. Go to customer service booth, they send me to window 6 or 7 outside the festival. Waiting in line with hundreds of other pretty pissed off peps by this time. Then they decided to stop giving refunds, wt*. Why allow some and not all. Very poor customer service and management on their part. All I wanted was to go and have some great food. All I got was a fat head ache. The best thing over all was the no line restrooms (because everyone was in the food lines....) and the Rock Medicine booth that I was able to get some medicine for my headache. SOOOOOO.......SAD................. :( .....

Bad, bad, bad. That is all I can say. Got there about 2:00 pm. $15 to park, long walk. At 2 pm, people are already walking out and warning people who are just coming in, to get a refund. Food was running out. My sister, a chef who is so looking forward to this event, just totally said she is going to try for a refund. The 3 of us went in anyway to check it out, and my sister-in-law, a music lover, cares more for the music than for the food. But I'm a foodie and I was so looking forward to trying all of America's fantastic purveyors. It was a mess, lines to Pink's hotdog was 2 hrs. The Burgermeister line was another 1 1/2 hrs they said and it snaked around a tent twice. Oh maybe, at least I can get a cheesecake. At least, it's something. That took 1 hour. My sister-in-law, a vegetarian (the only thing she can really eat here is PB&J), got her messy sandwich in 20 mins. Short or no lines for beer or PB&J which no one wants to eat anyway. As you were lining up for cheesecake, you can hear the events at the amphitheatre, but can't leave your line. Total chaos. No organization. 7 pm came by, at this point, all we've had all day, is half frozen slice cheesecake. Ran out of strawberries. Tried again for pastrami around 7 pm and was in line for 30 mins. A lady announced the pastrami was running out again and another 1 hour wait. Line wasn't moving at all. Oh my god! At this point, we were starving. Beer to drink is not going to cut it. We left and went to a restaurant in San Mateo. Definitely, not coming back next year or any other year. And neither should the hundreds and hundreds of people. I think the organizers were not very prepared for this turnout. Did they totally OVERSOLD this event? I'm glad I didn't pay the "all-access $500+ bucks" ticket just to end up getting a slice of cheesecake. the only consolation for the day, is at least go to see Big Bad Voodoo Daddy sitting there with a growling stomach.
Lulucarles at 1:38PM on 06/14/09
For those of you unable to get refunds, don't forget the ol' credit card dispute. I opened a dispute while standing in front of the ticket office, as soon as they stuck three hulking "Events" guys to block the entrance to the refunds line. My "proof" will be this page, along with an SJ Mercury News blog about the event. I'm shocked there's been no official word on this from Serious Eats, Live Nation or the Food Network.

When will we hear from Ed Levine? All of the comments here and no word from the Serious Eats people? This is just as disappointing as yesterday was.

We were one of the lucky ones. We arrived at around 2:30 got into the lower parking lot and once we made it to end of the line at the gate, were directed to the opposite end of the lot for another line that had just opened, so we got right in. Then the nightmare began. As a professional food vendor, I have never seen such a fiasco. I have sold Philly Cheesesteaks at large festivals for the past 33 years ( if you go to festivals you probably have had one). We did the Outside Lands Festival at Golden Gate Park last year. The food was mainly by Great SF restaurants. Restaurant people have no more clue how to work a large event than I do to run a restaurant, However the folks who ran outside lands made the effort to work with the restaurants and train them to pull it off. It was a great success. Obviously the promoters of this event left the vendors to fend for themselves and remain clueless. Any way thank god I'm a music fan .
After my horrible PBJ ( it was the shortest line) and BLT that only took and hour and a half we retired to the vast confines of the amphitheatre to see Bobby Flay make a hamburger. My wife waited for Juniors cheesecake in the meantime and missed that only to be told that the person in front of her got the last of it. But Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was a blast. Guy Fieri as totally insane and very entertaining. The whole crowd should have got the Margaritas though. We wandered over to the wine tent and was told that while one of the tents was for the poor folks who paid $500 the adjacent tent was free. It was nearly deserted and free wine was happily being pored by lonely vintners. Who knew? Certainly not the thousands of desperate and disappointed folks still waiting in endless lines.
Little Feat played to about an hundred real music fans who stuck it out.
So if you plan to do this again find a bigger venue, train the vendors, hire some pros who know the festival food business to train the restauranteurs.
fredtatman at 2:17PM on 06/14/09
I called the livenation number this morning. After being on hold for 20 minutes (a piece of cake compared to yesterday's endless lines), the customer rep took my name down for a refund, but said they needed to get approval from the venue. If they don't approve the refund, I plan on contesting the charge on my visa.

One more thought>>> Live Nation is not the successor to BGP . Bill would be horrified to see this vast corporate leech running his pride and joy. Another Planet is the true successor and it is obvious if you look at the difference between this event and Outside Lands.

What a freakin' mess this was. I can't believe that hey call this a food festival(without food) and music festival. It would've been less painful going to the DMV and then to the dentist than to this fiasco.

I just called 650 - 967 - 3000. It is to the Shoreline Amphitheater. The guy on said to make a copy of the tickets given at the event as well as the tickets purchased and the parking ticket. Then send them the origanals. Once they receive the originals, I should see a refunded within 3-5 days. He said he was not sure what was going to be done about the parking fee since that was being done at the event. So he told me to be sure I included a contact phone number. Here is the address he gave me:
1 Amphitheater Parkway
Mountain View, CA, 94043
I am going to address it to Attention: Refund Box Office
Hope this helps everyone.

We held two VIP All Access tickets, and yes were disappointed as many were. Two elements from my vantage point fell apart: technology & communication to staff (staff within the food stand is what I mean), and training on how to handle customers. I don't feel that it was proper for the lady with the tatoos that directed many from the main office to gate 6 for refunds had the right to yell out to an irritated mob that she "...didn't need to hear from the peanut gallery..." More training on damage control is needed. My compliments to the gentlemen that seemed to head security as he maintained a cool composure, and immediately fired off tips to his subordinates on handling procedures, and quietly (I just happened to be in front of him). I would have stayed if I had someone to talk to instead of being rushed off to gate 6. All I sought were food passes since I was paying for beverages in any case, and could have dealt with the lines; food passes would probably have kept a lot of people happy, and continue their spending otherwise.
On a final note...I just received via LiveNation email, my credit confirmation for $1052.00, and am proof that the zerox copying of the ticket process and commitment worked. I did notify American Express prior to this confirmation receipt and recommend that AMEX customers do the same

Update everyone. I purchased my tickets at Livenation. I just called them and the gave me a refund. Here is the number: 888-598-429. I will let you all know when I get the email that my refund has been processed.
unhappyeats at 4:55PM on 06/14/09
How is everyone handling the refund situation? Should we send in the tickets or call Live Nation, because I've been getting two different stories when I call Shoreline and Live Nation, which is the correct way to get a full refund (including the parking fee?)
mainevent at 5:42PM on 06/14/09
OK I just called LiveNation at: 1.888.598.4299
I said that I attended the Great American Food and Music Fest. They didn't even ask me why I was calling - they knew I wanted a refund. They took my last name, and within 2 minutes I had a full refund.
So my initial shock and disgust with the festival is tempered now that I have a refund. Thank you Serious Eats and/or LiveNation for at least giving us a refund. I'll eat the $15 parking ticket, and the $44 I paid for 2 pastrami sandwiches and 2 orders of wings (they wouldn't accept our free plate included in the ticket price for the food). Oh and the $46 I paid for 3 beers and 2 bottles of water.

Interesting to see these comments.
I got there around 5:30...there were lines, but they moved along ok.
Had Southside Market,Ton Lukes and the bacon sampler, all fantastic.
Thought Flay was really good...
And Little Feat were fun to hear.
Hope you try it again...I'm sure much was learned from this outing.

I got the email confirmation from Livenation that my refund has been processed. I should see the credit in 2-3 business days. I also sent an email to info@greatamericanfoodandmusicfest.com with my complaint. This is the response I received:
Thank you so much for taking the time to write. I am so incredibly
sorry about what you went through.
We certainly had every intention of making everything perfect. The fact
is, the problems were not anyone's fault by ours. Not the building's,
not Live Nation. We wanted to keep lines down so we invested all this
money (upfront...not too smart) for the "cashless system" that would do
just that... according to the company that was running it. This company
had a resume that included NASCAR races (200,000 +) so when we heard
that every transaction could be made in 3-seconds or less, we were in.
We had them come in a week early and start testing...making sure
everything worked...then as we opened the doors, the system failed.
The Fest did have an emergency system in place and cash banks and credit
card machines were distributed prior to the show, but it took us nearly
45-minutes to switch over and by that point, we had very large lines.
Added to that, it was our first year and we had no way to really judge
attendance. We looked at "pre-sales" and doubled them thinking that was
safe...and we would be over. We were wrong...and very sorry.
It is important to us as producers for you to understand that we do care
and put years of hard work into this just to have one company take us
down.
If you would like a refund, it isn't the easiest process, but it does
work.
PLEASE SEND A PHOTOCOPY OF YOUR TICKETS BACK TO
Shoreline Amphitheatre
One Amphitheatre Parkway
Mountain View, CA 94043
ATTN: BOX OFFICE REFUNDS
Again, we are all so sorry this happened...but at the same time are not
giving up. We will come back next year on our tour and will have
something special for those who were put out this year.
Thank you again for writing.
Jim
Hope this helps.

How can it be all their fault in one breath, and entirely that of another company in the next? The failed wristband system was not responsible for the mile walk to the gate, the hour wait to get in, overselling of tickets, food shortages, inadequately staffed vendors, overpriced water, poorly considered venue, uncontrolled chaos in line-ups, lack of programs, and on and on. I'm sure the refunds are appreciated, but have some integrity--own your mistakes, apologize sincerely, and don't try to place blame elsewhere.

I've been to a lot of festivals and to Disneyland, and this was by far the most colossally disappointing event I've ever attended. We were there at noon with tix in hand, but left at 4:30, hungry and spending over an hour in the refund line. I won't repeat the details as most of these posts seem to be very similar to our experience. I must add that when we finally got inside the gate around 1:00 and asked a group of employees where we could get a menu and event map, one of them said, "There are no maps and menus - this is a green event." When I said, "Oh...where did they get them?" and pointed to the folks walking past us with them, she replied, "Oh! We have menus??" Sigh (I ended up finding them at a small booth off to the side).
Best thing about the festival: the good humor and camaraderie in the crowds, as everyone was in the same pathetic situation and you couldn't help but laugh a sad, ironic laugh (beats crying, which we did see in the refund line), or cheer whenever someone actually got food and waved it over their heads to the rest of the line as if it was some sort of rare treasure - well, in this case, I guess food WAS a rare and coveted treasure .
Things to think about, should the "organizers" (a generous title, at best) ever attempt this festival again:
- Check out the event site beforehand, and plan out physical space and amount of food to accommodate the large crowds you were expecting...and don't oversell.
- Communication to all employees before the start of the event. There was a plethora of conflicting information.
- Stanchions, and enough employees to control the size, flow and direction of lines and to keep people from cutting in.
- On the back of the Menu, put an Event Schedule and Map, not the Ticketing Options and Prices. We're already in the event - we already HAVE tickets and don't need to know the prices! Oh yeah, and hand them out at the entrance.
- Ditch the "cashless" wristband system that doesn't work.
My boyfriend and I love yummy food, summer festivals, and were really looking forward to a great day of entertainment. We ended up getting Wing Stop hot wings (with an Advil chaser for the hunger-headache), making cocktails at home and reading how much other people felt burned by this festival, too. Awesome.
I would recommend to anyone having a hard time with Live Nation regarding a refund to call your credit card company, explain the situation and dispute the charge.

We have all acknowledged that this event was a total disaster due to such obvious failures that were avoidable with basic planning, that we fail to understand how it could have happened. Rather than add to the venting, I offer the following positive observations and suggestions for the future of this event:
1. Plan for the attendance. Any food event of this magnitude will attract over 10,000 people in any metropolitan area, so you have to plan for 20,000 to play safe, even in the first year of the event. When I read Ed Levine's interview in the Chronicle prior to the event, when he anticipated serving 5,000 portions, I knew he had underestimated the attendance.
2. Choose the right venue. This was a food event in a music event venue. Shoreline is a major music venue, with a small area for food options, not equipped for a major food event with some music options.
3. Understand the event. This event was all about sampling as much food as possible, which meant offering small portions. I knew that I would be coming alone to this event, and e-mailed the event website twice in the weeks before the event, requesting smaller portions for sampling. Unfortunately, I did not receive a response. Accordingly, I came equipped with a tote bag, plastic containers, zip lock bags and aluminum foil to take home the excess food to share with my family. Alas, I never needed to use any of it, because there was no food to take home.
To Ed Levine: It is so sad to me that your 14 year vision of this event had such bad planning. It appears that you were consumed with the bragging rights of assembling this stellar cast, that you overlooked the basics of planning a successful event, that ultimately embarrassed the cast that you worked so hard to assemble.

I'm a PR guy and a major foodie. The only reason I didn't attend this past weekend was because of a bum knee awaiting surgery. I'd really wanted to go, but couldn't.
In retrospect, I am glad I didn't.
But even moreso, given my job in PR, I'm stunned.
First off, even great "PR" can't make up for a lack of execution. The product is what the product is -- in this case, it was the GAFAMF, or whatever they're calling it now.
For all of those of you who routinely dismiss PR as some sort of fake balm, here's what my firm would've recommended:
An apology of SE a LOT sooner than Ed's. Comments were spiralling out of control by mid-afternoon Saturday.
An apology better than Ed's. Sorry, but I don't care about your dream or passed blamage.
A direct, easy to use guide on how to get refunds, with numbers and names, right here on SE.
An suggestion box email address (to get some of the bitching offline!) that connects people directly with SE and Ed.
That's it for now. I get paid to do this stuff. But yeah, um, those would be good starts.
SE and Ed, if you want to start to turn it around, email me. Apparently, the douches you've already poured money into haven't help one single bit. Agreed? :)
Good luck!
foodpr at 7:08AM on 06/15/09
Ed,
You MUST step up with some serious damage control. A hedgey apology won't cut it (nor will closing the comments on your apology post). Make it clear that folks will get their money back and lay out exactly how they can go about it. Yep, you'll have to eat the cost of the event. But it will stave off the (more expensive) law suits.
pie hole at 7:54AM on 06/15/09
I was in envy of folks who had the opportunity to attend this event and am appalled at how it failed. I feel so badly for anyone who spent money/looked forward and worked hard to try and make this happen.
But I must say I agree with foodpr - I didn't even attend this thing and I think the response from SE has not been up to snuff. Clear instructions for getting refunds are obviously in order and have not been provided. Ed, your apology wasn't strong enough and you need to update it - NOW. I know your heart was in the right place, but your execution wasn't and you need to suck it up - particularly if you want to try and rework this and do it again. How you handle this failure will determine if you have a success scenario in the future. Best of luck.

After 4 p.m. people using cash seemed to have a great time buying food at lines that were most often 15 minutes or less, and never more than half an hour.

This is a LIE. We left at 5 with no end in sight. FAIL. FAIL. FAIL.
danolsensf at 12:40PM on 06/15/09
I thought this would be a great event - obviously it wasn't and I'm glad I didn't travel or spend any money on it.
I tried to go to our city's chili festival this year, and not even halfway through the event, all vendors ran out of food and they cut ticket prices in half...basically, they still wanted you to pay half for absolutely nothing. We politely declined at the gate. Unfortunately the city refused to give parking refunds, so we walked a few blocks and ate at a great restaurant.
What is it with events these days?

Thanks for posting the LiveNation customer service number (1.888.598.4299).
Phoned now (9:45am PST), held for about 5 minutes and spoke with Mike.
I can confirm that they are giving refunds, no questions asked. Mike didn't even ask why, he just took my order number (for 8 tickets, around $200) and said they'd have a full refund within a few days.
Mike apologized on their behalf, though he wasn't aware of what happened as these guys are located in Virginia, having heard only that it wasn't fun so please don't go in guns blazing - these customer service guys had nothing to do with it.

Product- Event feedback- write a short full refund letter. If you paid credit card, the process will be faster. If you paid cash, make copies and keep originals. It will take longer to process. For the parking fee, you have to contact the Shoreline to get it. Mail a copy of your parking stub and/or your tickets. No guarantee on parking fee, but many others got their refund for it that day. Here's my factual story:
Why is dishonesty, incompetence, and immorality an integral way your company does business? Many people today had to spend hours in line to get their first meal the whole day. The fact of the matter is that I personally spent 5 hours in a totally disorganized line for a patrami or buffalo wings. Why did your company and vendors condone this? Why weren't customers offered refunds for their ticket admission? Why weren't the customers in line given timely valid updates, refunds and water? Customers were given nothing but a pin from the restaurant. Others heard we could get a refund for admission if they do it before 4pm. I was in my first line until 5pm. and no announcement was made by any staff or security. No security or staff organized lines to food vendors until 6pm. The events for the day close at 10pm. I never witnessed any security-in yellow shirts organize lines until 6pm. How do you explain that fact? How can you defend the great incompetence displayed by the planning and execution of all the staff involved? The event didn't open its doors until 1230pm and it was advertised that people could enter 1.5 hrs. before 12pm. Then, the computers to charge money on wrist bands was down. The I.T. guys didn't bother to test the software, which was quoted by a staff member in a food line. She had a badge on-staff printed on it. People who paid $300 for their wrist band were supposed to be able to walk through the front entrance. They didn't because the staff didn't tell anyone in line about the policy and there were no signs to explain the policy and format. How can you explain this fact? The company oversold the event(even selling tickets that day), they projected 5K people and got 10K+, they made the excuse everybody showed up at the same time-total lie and total nonsense, gave no water or a scrap of food to anyone- especially a 2 year old boy, the elderly, or those who baked in the unshaded sun for 5 hours straight.
My friends and I demand a full refund for the completely unacceptable level of incompetence and poor business practices that we endured this day.
shelbyss at 2:56PM on 06/15/09
Without question a complete disaster. I am so glad my party figured it out and left after standing in line to get in and then trying to get some food. We only wasted 3 hours. The final insult was being told to stand in line for a refund. No way - we left.

My husband called the event "Line Nation". Enough said.
macadam at 5:06PM on 06/15/09
This event had a lot of potential... too bad it didn't turn out the way it should have.
I don't feel that I need a refund for my tickets- I went, I had a good time w/ my friends, I was able to eat. HOWEVER, I checked my credit card account last night and found that these guys charged me TWO apparently flat fees of $75. I had linked my credit card to two different wrist bands, but we didn't spend anywhere NEAR $75. How could we, when the whole damn system wasn't working? We paid cash for most of our items.
Anyone else have this problem? Any idea on who I should contact regarding being over-charged by the vendors/wristband people/Great American Food and Music Fest? The website itself does not have a contact # or anything.
I'm pretty easygoing and I am prepared to let a lot of thing slide. But come on, people. This is getting beyond ridiculous.
beratedlime at 7:28PM on 06/15/09
I've already posted our disappointment with the entire event (blah, blah, blah).... not going to rehash that. Instead I will put new comments out in a positive light.
1) We called LiveNation Sunday evening, actually got a live person! The person with whom my husband spoke was very good at Customer Service, with just a few questions and answers, voila our credit card will be credited for the purchase of our tickets. We received confirmation today that the credit is confirmed.
2) YES, our experience was not as expected. We missed seeing the demos from the Food Network people that we watch on our television for more hours than we care to admit to :)
3) Both my husband and I agree, that if the new-and-improved GAF&MF comes to the Bay Area again, we will purchase tickets.
4)Ed, you must know by now that you've been challenged to an unofficial "Throw Down" by all of the people who have posted their unhappy experience. We are hopeful that this was a learning experience for the many factions involved in putting it all together. We certainly would like the opportunity to see Bobby, Guy, Anne & Aida (and/or others) under better circumstances
loo lindsay at 11:26PM on 06/15/09
I was there all day, from 8am - 11pm, working on the music half of the festival. And for our part, I think it was a good day. The sound and tech crews were professional and friendly, and I think the music performances were almost flawless. Ok, one glitch with a band who didn't all fit on the small stage. But for such a large event, people truly did a fantastic job from the planning stages to the end.
I do hope Serious Eats and all involved give the food half some further consideration and try again. I did have one of the bagels mid-afternoon. It was a tasty snack.
LanaBanana at 11:31PM on 06/15/09
PS. to my earlier comment. A live Bobby and Paula demo-pairing would erase many hard-feelings!
loo lindsay at 11:33PM on 06/15/09
If we all work together, people we can get our refunds and maybe even network to the point of doing a class-action suit against the promoters of this event. I am in the process of looking for a law firm that will take the case. Stay tuned. Don't let them win!
hymie501 at 11:48PM on 06/15/09
@hymie - you are an asshole. You can get your money refunded. That's not enough for you?
simon at 2:14PM on 06/16/09
I ran a race last year that was botched up beyond belief. The course was poorly marked, the volunteers weren't there in time, and people all ran different courses, making it such that times and places meant nothing. Runners were understandably upset...there were people who had put months and months of training into this event. The race director expressed his apologies, and offered to let anyone who participated in last year's event into this year's event at the price of their choosing (they could pay anything from nothing to the standard price, based on what they felt the race was worth). The race will likely lose money next year, but it's setting itself up for future years, and it's better than having no one show up and folding altogether. Ed, maybe you could consider something like that? I wasn't at the Fest, so I have no idea how poorly it went, but based on what I'm reading, it sounds like unless you do something, no one's going to return next year. If this is truly your dream, a little incentive for people who got burned this year might get them to come back next year. It sounds like a bear to organize, and I think people are being a little harsh, but then again, as I said, I wasn't there. I wish you the best of luck with future Food and Music Fests, and hope that you take the lessons you learned this year and use them to make next year a success.
