Wow - I thought purposely dumbing-down language to be cool went out the door with Bush.
It's "doughnut". We spell something based on its etymology, not because its more convenient to spell phonetically. In a multicultural society like Americas, there'd be no end to the spellings of words.
Sorry adding the "ugh" is such a burden to everyone. Think of it this way - maybe the few extra clicks you have to do on the typewriter will help burn off that extra cruller...
