Meet & Eat: Grace Kang, Serious Eats Intern
Note: Grace interned with us earlier this year but now that school's out of session, she's back for more! She'll be here over the summer to help us blog, eat, and reclaim her title as Ed's diet buddy. Her first contribution to Serious Eats this summer? Sharing rainbow cookies from a bakery near her home in Long Island! Ah yes, we do love Grace. Please give her a warm welcome!
Name: Grace Kang
Location: New York
Guilty pleasures? Lemon curd straight out of the fridge, cold pancakes, champers. When I was younger I loved microwaved ham and Swiss cheese rollups; kind of gross, but amazing at the time.
Describe your perfect meal. Spaghetti carbonara, vinho verde, and lots of cake for dessert.
What food won't you eat? I can't stand black olives, maraschino cherries, and most beans. Don't hate me.
What would you like to try but haven't yet? Burger King's Apple Fries. ...Not. I've never had an artichoke.
Favorite food person? For some reason, I can only think of Porco Rosso and that's just because he's a pig. Flying pigs! Who knew?
When did you first realize you were a serious eater? When I decided I wanted to intern at Serious Eats.
What do your family and friends think of your food obsessions? They join in; we even had a family tasting of a bunch of Korean fried chicken joints a couple of years ago. A blind tasting with scorecards and everything!
Everyone has a go-to person they call for restaurant recommendations. Who's yours? I don't have one...any volunteers?
What is your favorite meal of the day and where do you get it? Dinner--I love eating out by candlelight. If I had to choose though, I would say lunch at Casa Mono. I know it's totally contradictory to what I just said, but I always have the best time at lunch. It's so nice and relaxing compared to dinner which gets a little too crazy there.
Do you ever cook? What's the best dish you make? I eat a lot of eggs when I'm cooking just for myself at home. Fried over easy, I put them on top of everything. I wouldn't say I have a best dish since I rarely cook the same thing twice, but I do bake a lot. It's a lot easier (and a lot more fun) to eat five cookies than five chickens.
