Prank: How to Mix an Exploding Cocktail

20090604-exploding-drink-recipe.png

Wired has an amusing recipe for a Manhattan-esque cocktail it calls The Manhattan Project. You would be correct in assuming that this is a drink of literally explosive proportions. It involves freezing Mentos into ice cubes and including them in a mixture of Diet Coke, rye whiskey, a splash of vermouth, and a couple dashes of bitters.

Whether anyone would nurse that concoction long enough for the ice to melt around the Mentos is a question scientists haven't answered yet. [via Neatorama]

solution: rather than putting one mentos in each ice cube tray, put just a small amount of water in the bottom of each compartment of the tray, let it freeze, then put two or three mentos in there, and fill it the rest of the way up with water. use one of those cubes and a few regular ice cubes. with less ice around them, the mentos in the supercube will come into contact with the diet coke much faster, and you won't have to wait long for lulz.

Ha ha- super cube......good one.

gotta try this one for sure :p

oh man, oh man, oh man...i am all over this. can't wait

Oh my God...why didn't I find out about this in college?! I must throw a party now...an outdoors party...

Seems like a sad waste of good alcohol...it's too precious to spill!

Shenanigans! Doesn't the Mentos-in-coke thing only work because there are a lot of Mentos and a small area for the gas to escape (the neck of the bottle)? I don't think putting one in a glass of Coke is gonna do much. (Nevermind that the water might dissolve the necessary Mentos crags before it freezes...)
