From a Fascinating Listicle on Beavers

"The Catholic Church actually declared beavers to be a fish, according to dietary restrictions, meaning they are OK to eat on both Fridays and throughout Lent. [The Church's] decisions are based more on an animal’s environment than their physical characteristics." [Neatorama]

wait, what? how does a beaver equate to a fish? who eats beavers anyway?

Thanks! I feel so much better now that the church condones my beaver fetish.

It's the tail, by the way. They thought it had to be part of a fish.

Actually, I believe it's muskrats, with the reasoning that (1) there wasn't much fish available for Lent to early settlers in some parts around America, and (2) anyone eating muskrat is doing enough penance already, they're more than making up for not having fish instead. :-)

From what my priest told me years ago, the Catholic Church considers any cold-blooded animal "not meat." So, when you can't eat meat on Fridays, you can still eat fish, snake, frogs, etc. Funny that beavers fell on that list as warm-blooded mammals...

Thank goodness... Cause I try to eat beaver as much as I can every week! I guess I just have a thing for beaver. (Someone had to say it!)

Is there an echo in here?!

Damn blackberry! Forgive me... Must have been the beaver talk.

Good news for Catholic beaver eaters.

Based on what I read in my local Catholic newsaper ; the church that can justify voting for Obama , can easily come up with a reason to eat beaver on Friday.

There's an old north woods recipe for Beaver:

Skin it, gut it, season with salt & pepper. Place it on a cedar plank, roast it for several hours at 325. When done, throw away the
beaver and eat the plank.

Beaver meat tastes very fishy.
