The Coffee Wars Continue
If you haven’t seen a McCafé commercial in the last few weeks, you haven’t turned on your television. McDonald’s $100 million marketing blitz was their biggest since the launch of the Egg McMuffin, back in the 1970s. And it seems to be paying off. According to the Boston Globe, McDonald’s is now the second-most preferred coffee brand in America—unseating Dunkin’ Donuts, and coming up behind Starbucks. But both Starbucks and Dunkin’ have cut prices and launched specials in response.
What do you think? Have recent ads, product launches, and price cuts changed your morning coffee routine? Or are you set in your caffeinated ways?

I received coupons for free samples of McD's then-new coffee drinks awhile back, so I tried one -- I got my money's worth. I refuse to acknowledge Starbucks, preferring local shops or at least state/regional-based franchises. Frankly, I'd rather use my coffee press and some Fair Trade coffee than squander money on lesser products that cost as much as a mosquito net that could save a child's life in Africa ....

I might be biased since I used to work for SBUX, (although...that's probably more likely to make me biased AGAINST them rather than FOR them) but I've tried both McDonalds' and DD's coffees and coffee drinks and I haven't been impressed by anything there.
Now, I agree with yenta that I'd much rather press my own high quality coffee, but if I'm in a pinch, or if I'm looking for more than just a cup of joe, I don't mind paying the extra for SBUX. (if there aren't any local coffee places around that I know of) But that's just me.

I'll hit Starbucks, but the deciding factor in that choice is that my local Starbucks has bannanas at the register. I'll grab a coffee and a bannana and I'm good to go for the morning.

McCafe = The Sucks! Big time!!! I had one of the new lattes at McD's recently and it was so uber-sweet and anti-delicious that I felt like giving myself a timeout as punishment for having spent perfectly good money on perfectly bad coffee.
Starbucks makes the best lattes. Dunkin brews the best regular ol' coffee.
zweidler at 10:27AM on 06/19/09
With all the money I seem to accidentally waste already, I just can't justify coffee from any place other than my own kitchen. Plus, I can't imagine it tastes any better than what I can make for myself.

I'm admittedly a bit of a coffee snob, but I really like McD's coffee & lattes. It has to be straight-up though. Don't let McD's add any cream or flavorings unless you like coffee-flavored syrup. Black coffee or a regular latte for me.

I had plenty of McCafe in Australia, where the offer Soy as a milk option. None of the US stores I have visited have Soy. Being allergic to cows milk, my decision has been made by Maccas and Dunkin that I will be going to Starbucks when I get chain store coffee. All of the local places I frequent also offer soy as an option.
nitsuj at 10:54AM on 06/19/09
Living in San Francisco, I have so many coffee options that these three are not on the radar. I think liking McD's coffee here is more dependent on finding a location with decent staff. Don't have Dunkin Donuts here but Starbucks tends to have nicer locations and more knowledgeable baristas.

I love McDonald's. They, as far to my knowledge, are the only fast place that has sugar-free iced coffee and, as a diabetic, makes me happy.
ArchieLeach at 11:11AM on 06/19/09
my office has wondeful coffee. i speed to work so i can partake.. yum.
seikel at 11:13AM on 06/19/09
i actually had to stop all caffeine ingestion this week to see if it would clear up a health problem, and unfortunately, it did. so i guess i'm off the sauce.
i never go to any of those places. i always get my coffee at the small, independent cafes on my usual route.
cybercita at 11:28AM on 06/19/09
@ArchieLeach I dunno about Dunkin Donuts, but the iced coffee at SBUX can easily be made sugar free. You can either get it without sweetener and then add sweet and low or equal or whatever...or you can get one of the sugar free syrups as opposed to the "classic" syrup. When I get SBUX iced coffee, I always get it with hazelnut syrup, which also comes in SF.
Just an fyi.

Couple years back, I conducted my own coffee test: Starbucks, Coffee Bean (West Coast), Seattle's Best, Peete's (Nor. Cali), and Peerless (Nor. Cali). Coffee Bean had the best tea (not even close) and Peete's had the best coffee (I'm a dark roast guy). Peerless received an honorable mention for being the greenest.
Turn the clocks forward to the present (and gloomier) day, I performed yet again another coffee taste tates. This time, the fast food mosters: McDonalad's, Dunkin Donuts, and Jack in the Box. Dunkin left the competition in the dust. Coffee had a deep full flavor and tasted like it was made by my favorite barista. McDonald's coffee is actually a good value except I've noticed the quality varies DRASTICALLY from store to store, something I'm sure McD's corporate offices can't control....
a_chef_disguised at 11:36AM on 06/19/09
Dunkin Donuts definitely has sugar-free iced coffee, you just have to be sure to ask for it. (And taste-test when they give it to you, because they will occasionally add sugar out of habit.)
benbenberi at 12:20PM on 06/19/09
Thanks for the heads up guys on the sugar-free stuff. We have Dunkin Donuts here but they are scarce and out of the way and who doesn't have Starbucks? They just are hectic on the way into work and well, McDonald's is fast and ready. I think they know me!
Any recommendations on what tastes good at Starbucks without going off on a novel?
ArchieLeach at 1:16PM on 06/19/09
Press pot at home. We order from different (and expensive!)roasters regularly like Stumptown, Blue Bottle, Ecco, etc, drink multiple cups of coffee a day, and spend much less than if I were buying a latte at McD's or DD daily.
If I want to waste my little bit of cash on coffee, I am going to go somewhere with a smart barista and tasty coffee (Gimme! coffee is my poison in upstate NY), not waste it on cheap slag.
MissMae at 1:22PM on 06/19/09
The thing with SBUX is that some baristas are good and some aren't. Unlike McDonalds (Don't recall with DD), the barista has some say over whether the foam is good, whether the shots are pulled in a proper time, etc.
So if you can find a barista that knows what they're doing, a macchiato (foam marked with shots) or latte could be pretty tasty. Unfortunately, there's a ton of turnover, so it's hard to get talent and keep it.
That being said, my safe drink is the aforementioned iced coffee with half the amount of hazelnut syrup that they'd normally use "classic" syrup on. Once in a blue moon, I like a mocha macchiato, which is super sweet and doesn't come in sugar free.
If I know/trust the barista, any of the classic non-sweetened drinks can be good.
That's been my experience.
lawofmurphy at 1:23PM on 06/19/09
The nice girl at Dunkins know my order the second I walk in the door. I won't be changing my habits any time soon (or at least until we get our coffee maker fixed).
Amandarama at 1:33PM on 06/19/09
I am a coffee snob and here in Milwaukee we have a local vendor called Alterra coffee. They have ridiculously strong coffee. It's like a mule kicked you in your mouth. Anyway that is the way I like it, if I go anywhere else the coffee is too weak for my tastes. Alterra has ruined me for all other coffee, Starbucks doesn't even come close.

I've ordered cappucinios twice at McDonald's recently. Both were horrid. The 2nd one had, I think, and entire cup of sugar in it even though I did not ask for sugar and refused their suggestion of a flavored syrup. The whole point of a cap, for me, is that I can actually drink it without sugar (unlike straight coffee). And, I'm guessing the flavored syrup is to hid the horrible, horrible burnt taste of the coffee. I'm not a fan of Sbuck's coffee, because I think it tastes burnt, but espresso drinks there are palatable. Now, if only the Egg McMuffin could make the move to Sbucks, I could only make one stop in the morning!
heidij74 at 3:22PM on 06/19/09
I'm sure it's a cheap beverage, so you get what you pay for, but it is lamentable that 95% of America will never taste a cup of coffee. Products like this make me angry to the point of not being able to muster a defense, and reminds me that I should spread good coffee, not bash the drugs and candy sold by Wesayso Inc.
johndoughy at 3:31PM on 06/19/09
I was actually turned off by the McCafe commercial. Adding an accented e doesn't make anything better. It just makes it look dumb. I have my favorite coffeeshop that I've been going to for almost 10 years...no reason to change. :)
omarac at 10:47PM on 06/19/09
ArchieLeach, I don't believe I pass a Starbucks on my way to work, nor is there one near me. Then again, I live in what is very firmly Dunkin territory. Indeed, I think I pass something like 5 Dunkins and there's one in the building.
For regular coffee, I prefer Dunkin. Starbucks is on the bitter side for me. Though, I'd prefer if Dunkin let me mix in my own milk and sweetener.
wunami at 11:18PM on 06/19/09
ewww. no thanks.
wookie at 1:13PM on 06/20/09
McCafés are great for the "misery market" of coffee. But neither Starbucks nor McDonald's not Dunkin' Donuts offer anything above the level of fast food coffee. So it hasn't changed my habits one iota.
swagv at 2:26PM on 06/21/09
The coffee at MickyD's is freaking awful! I tried a Latte and i was almost inclined to throw it out. But then i remembered i had to actually pay for the thing so I reluctantly kept it. I will NEVER be getting coffee from their again.
oldmanonastick at 4:05AM on 06/22/09
I've tried the McDonalds Iced Coffee twice in the last few weeks and both time it was so full of sweetened cream it made me want to gag. The second time I ordered it, I asked for mostly coffee and just a tiny bit of cream, and it was still way too much. I gave it back, and asked to just add more coffee and the guy looked at me like I was from Mars. He added more (I guess) but what I got back looked like watered down coffee added at the top. I gave up, and will continue to go to my wonderful local places or Starbucks for my iced coffees in the future. I tried...
