What's On Your Quarantine Food Wish List?

20090505chicken.jpgWhile the worst of this month’s swine flu hysteria seems to have passed, authorities in some areas are still exercising extreme caution. After a visitor to the Wanchai Metropark hotel in Hong Kong tested positive for the virus, the Hong Kong health department—still reeling from the SARS epidemic six years ago—decided to hold the hotel’s three hundred other guests for a seven-day quarantine.

Finding the hotel food options growing stale, guests have started exploring their delivery food alternatives. And while some are relying on Pizza Hut, the Wall Street Journal reports, “French guests have taken it up a notch: Their consulate has arranged for French dishes like poulet à la moutarde to be brought in.”

Oh, the French—always providing for countrymen in dire culinary need. If you were quarantined, what would you want your consulate to bring in? [WSJ via BuzzFeed]

meatloaf and mashed potatoes and the meatloaf better have bacon on top!

Well, I'd hope for Cobb Salad and a Muffaletta, perhaps a rib-eye with salt potatoes, but I have a feeling that in reality, there'd be a cold Domino's pizza. Can I eat with the French folks?

If I was quarantined in Hong Kong? And forced to eat out everyday? I'd tell the consulate to back off with the American options and get me a list of respectable restaurants in Hong Kong pronto.

Hot, fresh, Hong Kong egg tarts.

if i were quarantined in a foreign country, my first response would be "get my mom here and have her make all my favorites" and no im not ashamed to admit i would first think of wanting my mom lol

kimchi, pizza, and wine. the basics.

I have to agree with I_like_food about forgetting the American stuff and with bionicgrrrl with the wine. But having lived in a place where uncooked veggies are a bad idea (seriously, especially during rainy season trust me) a gigantic salad with fresh ingredients is the first thing I would crave. Oh and did I mention the wine...

Pepsi Throwback!

Ideally, I'd be a pain in the butt and ask for something featuring pork. Bami goreng, for example.

More realistically, however, I'd agree with I_like_food. Good heavens the explorations to be made.

Or if the consulate could only bring me American goods for some reason, I'd try for as much of Troeg's Troegenator Double Bock as possible. Monks did call doppelbocks "liquid bread," after all, and Troeg's is freaking delicious. And I'm sure it would make being stuck in a hotel room staring at the wall a little less boring...

Depends on the country I suppose. I'd like to think I'd be inclined to explore my local food options. However, if I was having some kind of homesickness for American food, I think I'd want a cheeseburger - rare and topped with a runny fried egg. Onion rings instead of fries, thanks! Also in the running: a sausage sub with peppers and onions.

I agree-it would depend on the country. But if I were craving something from the States, I'd ask for a burger from the Sidetrack in Ypsilanti, Mi. Cooked medium rare with hot pepper cheese, bacon, and mayo, plus a side of their hand cut fries. If they could get me a mug of Oberon, I'd be able to handle the rest of the quarentine much better...

Well, for starters it would have to be kosher. I'd probably want ginger scallion chicken and spicy peanut wontons at some point; schwarma in a lafa with hummus, Israeli salad, techina and amba; and vegan taro chicken a la king. And salads. Lots and lots of salads.

assuming i were on vacation, then by this point I would really be ready for some indian food. so fresh basmati rice and mattar paneer (to satisfy my north indian craving) and then rasam and lays potato chips with lemon pickle and yogurt (to satisfy my south indian craving).

@stufsocker, I'm intrigued by the "vegan taro chicken a la king" - what is that? sounds good if the taro is taro root. just googled it and found a place in teaneck that serves it...tell me more!

I'd want what I always crave when I'm stuck in my office...ramen, pho, gyoza, shumai, shrimp or chargrilled pork summer rolls, jjigae, beef brisket the way Famous Dave's makes them, unagi, goat curry, corn pudding, gumbo, cucumbers w/ ranch dressing, I could go on...

I'd probably miss a poutine and could use it at a quarantine moment....extra melty and messy please!
