A soda jerk working in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1939. The term soda jerk came from the motion of the arm while adding soda water to an ice cream soda. Soda fountains were once ubiquitous at drug stores. [via Howard]

Ice cream sodas are one of those foods that have really gone out of fashion--I don't recall seeing root beer floats since I was a child.

I can still remember what a treat it was for us to eat at the local Rexall drugstore during the summer. It wasn't that the food was all that grand. The great thing about it was that Rexall had an AIR CONDITIONER! I think that they had it set on about 55F. God, what a relief that was!
