It's good to know where your food comes from. This banana sponge cake clarifies the "banana" part. Jason Lam of Me So Hungry scored one at this office along with some other interesting Japanese snacks.

Hmm...I thought these cakes were a Chinese thing (or at least a Taiwanese thing). At least, I've always been able to get them in Taiwan with Chinese packaging.
Just to be clear, it isn't actually banana "cake"...it's just cake with red bean paste filling shaped like a banana with the word on it just to be sure. I suppose the cake could contain banana, but I've never tasted that when I've had these. Perhaps the Japanese version does.

Ah...looking closer at his post, the Japanese version is banana flavored. Interesting. I guess it makes more sense than the ones I'm used to.

Tokyo banana are the thing to bring back from Tokyo as omiyage. Glorified Twinkies with the old-school banana flavor...

Tokyo banana is yummy but they are kinda pricey. @Tokyorosa, have you had the chocolate version? I'm curious..
Better than that is a convenience store junk food "marugoto (=whole)" banana.
