Look Who's Talkin': Comments, Quips, and Tips We Have Known and Loved

There's so much going on in Talk week to week that we almost can't keep up. If you're in the same boat, here's a small selection of topics and responses that have piqued our interest this week.

What should I do with all these tomatoes?

Look Who's Talkin'"I'm with @huney — that's exactly what I did with about 30 lbs of tomatoes last summer, roasted them, made a huge batch of soup and froze it. You can make it more concentrated and use it as a base for sauces, too." brooke29

Are you a liar about your cooking/baking mistakes?

"Blame everything on the children: 'She opened the oven!' 'He stuck his dinosaur into it!' 'There was a stray snotbomb so it had to get binned!'" i8alot

Tucson-based Serious Eaters: posting?

"Anyway, for both of you, I do have some recommendations. MUST GET a Sonoran Hot Dog. El Guero Canelo or BK's - that's the debate here, anyway. Both are south side institutions...." missvenuz

In Dire Need of Picnic Brunch Options!

"Quiche! It's easily transported, protein rich, tastes great warm or room temperature, and is a nice, healthy, impressive option. If the crowd are omnivores, you can't beat the classic Quiche Lorraine. Otherwise, go with some wonderful seasonal vegetables...." Paula Maack

Tell Your Asparagus Story

"I didn't know you could eat raw asparagus until a couple of years ago. I'm 48. Always a little late to the party ... Anyway, I'll eat it any way it comes, but have warm fuzzies for roasted asparagus tossed with pasta, garlic, lemon zest and pecorino. And yes, I suffer with the pungent urine, but feel it's worth the unsavory side-effects." smallkitchen

Strange but Tasty Childhood Snacks

"My little sister used to eat butter plain. We had to put it on a high shelf so we'd stop finding finger holes in it. So gross. Freak." embolini9

If you had a food cart/truck...

"I would have a Chips & Dip cart...chips of all shapes, sizes, flavors...dips of the world!" vadm130

Ideas for fresh beans...

"Sauté onions and garlic in olive oil, add tomatoes (canned are fine), chickpeas and spices (Indian, Mexican, etc.), peppers, etc. and simmer until chick peas are done and the liquied is reduced. Serve over rice." CJ McD

Cooking for your pets

"My two dogs, a daschund-beagle mix named Noodle, and a Jack Russell named Olive, both have a thing for fruit. They each get an apple every night around 7:30. Olive enjoys dehydrated apple rings (the chewy ones, not the hard ones). In addition to apples, Noodle eats pears, mangoes, and bananas. A couple nights ago, they ate green peas, not just because each dog wanted them, but because they each wanted the other to not have the peas." beth1

Substitute Self-Rising Flour for AP Flour?

"I agree with JerzeeTomato, it really isn't a good idea to substitute as the extra ingredients will mess up most recipes asking for AP. I'd use the self-rising for something like biscuits (I mean, who doesn't like a good biscuit anyway?) and get some AP if you're planning on baking other things. Good luck!" misterhee

Don't know the lingo — jump to line break when clicking on link?

"Yes. I've gotten complaints about this in person as well. We'll be setting some time aside next week to jump the stories right to the unread portion." Adam Kuban
