Look Who's Talkin': Comments, Quips, and Tips We Have Known and Loved
There's so much going on in Talk week to week that we almost can't keep up. If you're in the same boat, here's a small selection of topics and responses that have piqued our interest this week.
Eaters and eating disorders
"Eating always seemed like a hassle to me. I always seemed to have better things to do. But as I matured and to be honest back when the food network was interesting 10 years ago, I realized how important food was. I still have food issues but I am able to go out and eat with friends without heading to the bathroom to lose my lunch as they say. Thanks for your story. Excellent thread." —chardonnay
Do you sift flour?
"I dont know about 4x, but am I the only one who kind of enjoys sifting?" —nalega
Favorite Camping Food/Recipes?
"Banana boats. Use a knife to make a slit going the length of a banana peel. Open the slit and cut a V-shaped slot in the banana. Stuff the slot with chocolate and marshmallows, close up the peel, and toss it in the coals...." —cycorider
Instant Potatoes and Other Embarrassing Food Stuff
"When I was a kid, I thought all corned beef came in a can! I don't believe I had real corned beef until I was in my early 20's... I haven't eaten the canned stuff since. But every single time I walk by it at the store, I think easy corned beef hash.... one of these damned days I'm gonna buy some!" —pavlov
What is the first thing you grab?
"If I'm feeling healthy (or guilty about what I've consumed recently), I have an apple. Otherwise, olives and cheese and a big glass of wine or a martini, helps me focus on cooking dinner. :)" —nowsonexitmusic
Video: How to cook an entire cow's head
"That doesn't bother me at all. When I was a kid my parents used to shop at this Mexican market where they had massive cow heads in the freezer section all the time. My brothers and I used to push each other into the freezers or dare one another to stick our fingers through the plastic and into the eye socket. Just for the record, I never did it. For the longest time I thought they were horse heads because that's what my brother's told me. It confused the hell out of me and it made me think that my dad's side of the family ate the most disgusting things. I know better now." —PumpkinBear
Veg Mothers' Day - Thanks for the Ideas
"How absolutely lovely! With such attention to detail, I can't figure out the 'chaos' part of your username. You know you've set the bar awfully high for next year, don't you?" —zucchini
The English Muffin Experiment: Homemade vs. Store-Bought
"I remember Julia Child making English muffins from scratch using tuna cans to mold them. My mom always made us English Muffin Pizzas for just about every birthday party we ever had from when we were 5 to when we were about 17. (To be honest, I still love them today!) I have a feeling the English Muffin is going to experience a much deserved renaissance..." —therealchiffonade
Awesome Hack for leftover salad
"Ina Garten uses her leftover salad in a similar way...she blends it all together and adds it to her hot soups...the greens and vinegar add great flavor to the soups." —juliebugsmama
Make-ahead recipes for graduation reception
"Having done the same thing about six years ago, I definitely recommend doing as much ahead of time as you can. Sandwiches are always popular and some can be made ahead. Try chicken salad or ham salad with fresh (split) croissants on the side. Some finger/tea sandwiches can even be completely made in advance. You could also marinate and grill a variety of vegetables (zucchini, red onions, mushrooms, sweet bell peppers, etc.) and serve as either a side dish, or with slices of crusty Italian bread for a vegetarian sandwich. I also recommend a variety of salads. Greek salad, Caprese salad, Mexican corn & bean salads, or good ol' American potato salad always go over well, and can sit out for some time. Put out a couple platters of fresh fruit, or a fruit salad, and an assortment of quality chips & dips, and you've got a nice, rounded-out meal. Dessert should be small and portable - homemade cookies, brownies, bars, cupcakes, candies, etc." —kimberlymac
Cocktail Suggestions
"I would do a gin-based drink, a vodka-based drink (probably something fruity and crowdpleasing like dharmon suggested), and a tequila or rum based drink (mojitos are a good choice but I might not choose to do two minty drinks if you're only doing 3). Bourbon cocktails are less accessible for a large crowd and not that many people will order them." —kathryn
Costco and Big Box stores for food: way or no way?
"Like some of the other posters, I appreciate certain aspects of big-box stores, but I'll confess to being a bit terrified by them. They make me feel like I'm one of the kids in "Honey I Shrunk the Kids," and not in a good way. One thing that I do *highly* recommend looking into at Costco is yeast! If you're even a semi-regular baker, it's so worth buying a box of yeast--it costs under $5, I think, for probably 100x the quantity of those stupid packets. Even if you don't end up using the whole thing, you'll still save a ridiculous amount of money." —annatr
Mother's Cookies Update After Kellogg's Purchase
Radley Mother's Cookies Update After Kellogg's Purchase
"Don't bother!! I just bought and tried (5 minutes ago) my favorite Mothers 'Taffy Cookies' and my second favorite 'Circus Animal Cookies,' they aren't even CLOSE to the real Mothers Cookies. How sad, except that I hate Kelloggs, and now don't have to worry about buying Mothers from them. The cookies aren't terrible, just not as good as before!" —Radley
