Forgotten Breakfast Cereal Follow-Up Question

I don't think the interweb at large is ever going to get tired of looking back at breakfast cereals of the past. Once you've seen a gallery or two of vintage cereal boxes, you've pretty much seen them all. We're certainly guilty of such retrogazing, and Yes But No But Yes is just the latest blog to pour a big bowl of nostalgia.
But what I'm doing so awkwardly here at this hazy early morning hour is using their post as a jumping off point to ask dbcurrie a question that's been bugging me—and probably a few serious eaters as well: Did you ever figure out what the heck cereal it was that you asked about here?

I know! Thank you! I've been wondering too. All those replies to her question and I really was hoping she figured it out...but somehow I don't think she did.

I still get the jingle for 'Crispy Critters' stuck in my head for time to time.

does NOBODY else remember (and long for) S.W. Grahams? They were like a better Golden Graham cereal.

@Adam, I'm pretty sure now that I was thinking of the old version of Kix. As someone pointed out, the formula for Kix changed in the 90's, adding a sugary coating that wasn't there when I was eating the cereal as a kid. So unless I find a way to peel the sweet coating off of Kix, the cereal doesn't exist any more.
However, thanks to all the suggestions, I now have a supply of other cereals keeping my Cheeios company. So even though I didn't find the one I was looking for, it's still a win for the SE team.

I LOVED Rice Honeys when I was a kid.

Why, oh why can't the cereal people come up with a replacement for C-3PO cereal?
Kerosena at 12:58PM on 05/01/09
@dbcurrie: I figured as much from following your comments, but I was hoping something had changed and you had miraculously found it. ;)
@Kerosena: Be careful what you wish for. George Lucas would probably muck it up with some of awful CG reimagination.

@Adam, the sad thing is that puffy breakfast cereal is one of those things that you just can't make in a home kitchen. Because of course you need either a volcano or a cannon, and I have neither of those on hand.
But in the name of mad experimentation, I'd love to figure out a way to make home-made Cheetos and Kix and other puffy extruded foods without the need for mega-machinery. Just for the fun of it.

i used to live near the weetabix factory in massachusetts. that cr@p smelled like dog food. i've _never_ eaten it.

I had been telling people about OJs cereal for years. No one ever remembered it, either by trying it or by having seen the commercial. I loved the tv ad: a cartoon cowboy on a filmed miniature set interacting with a herd of oranges breaking loose from the corral, rolling down the gully and then somehow making their way into your bowl. "OJs Cereal! ROUND 'EM UP!!!" I remember being transfixed with this commercial.
I bought the cereal and absolutely loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. It had a taste that reminded you of a Creamsicle or an Orange Julius. Delicious. It may have been out for two years, tops. I had always hoped that some other company would introduce a version of this, but I have never spotted it if it ever did.
Damn you, Kellogg's! DAMN YOU!!!

Adam, I am glad you brought this back around. I was so bummed dbcurrie couldn't figure it out that I wanted her to go get a new favorite and put it to rest.
Maybe KIX will come out with a retro throwback version like Pepsi is doing now, and use real sugar instead of corn syrup. That way, she (and all of us foodie do-gooders) can finally be satisfied.
Cool selection of boxes, Adam! There are some there I don't know, even. But, I remember the year Grins, Smiles. Giggles and Laughs came out with great fondness, because it was one of several new sugar cereals to come out that year. It must have been the year of new crazy, gimmicky sugar cereal flavors, which in my house meant I got to try each one as soon as they came out - yay!!! I think there were over a dozen new ones that year - a total thrill ride for me. (I was such a sugar deprived child - this is what I looked forward to.)
Thanks for the memories!

Did you ever have Circus Fun? It was like Lucky Charms, but not as good.

I have a sudden urge to go buy a box of Trix and eat food in colors that don't appear in nature, in flavors that can only be created in a laboratory.
Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids!
