Chicago: I Want This Sandwich ... NOW
SE contributor Michael Nagrant, oh he of Hungry Magazine, on the revamped menu at Chicago's Goose Island: "And the pork’s put to great use, maybe best on a grilled ham and cheese topped with a runny fried egg on pretzel bread kicked up with the sharp tang of pickled ramps, aka, spring onions." That sounds really good.

Living right by the place I have been to Goose Island and find the very very borderline gastro-pub food pretty damn good. That being said I fail to see how Mr. Nagrant can compare Goose Island a touristy Lincoln Park brewery to Publican one of the most fun and adventuresome meals I have had in the city. Publican serves foods like grilled ramps, head cheese and intense artisan fare with a memorable, unique interior design. The service is also very knowledgable and enthused to tell you the genesis of just what has gotten to your table. Like if you were going on a date and expecting to get laid Goose Island would probably lead your date to give you an ass-out hug at the end of the night and a "I have to wash my hair" - rebuttal the following weekend. Publican would definitely solicit a better result. Good food at both by my count, just very blatantly not comparable.

The new menu items at Goose at their best ARE compareable. But like I say in the review, it's still not Publican. They serve big crowds and the consistency is off some times at Goose. That being said, there is something about good service, and the Publican's been a mad house the couple of times I've been there.
