In Videos: Paula Deen's Fried Mac and Cheese Bacon Bites

Mac and cheese wrapped in bacon, breaded, and then deep-fried makes perfect sense if you first stop and ask yourself, "What would Paula Deen do?" And she has done it. The video evidence, after the jump.

Alton Brown has advocated for fried macaroni and cheese as well:

Shouldn't this be called Paula Deen is Trying to Kill Us, Part 7?
Okay, here's the thing. I love bacon. Love it. I am also very fond of macaroni and cheese. Deep Frying is a truly wonderful thing. But put them all together, and no. Deep fried mac and cheese is great, adding the bacon is that one step beyond which it should go. The bacon is greasy and the oil is not going to emulsify with the M&C, it's just gonna be greasy. And disgusting. And way too much. At least for me. I never even though I had a limit, but Paula Deen does seem to hit it, over and over again.
chisai at 1:01PM on 04/15/09
rather disgusting, in my opinion, yet another decadent, disgusting over-the-top piece of food that is not really needed by the already overweight american public. why not start breading and frying everything! brownies? lasagna? ramen noodles? dogfood? mmmmm..... i can see them lining up....
maybe she should stay home and try to manage her restaurants which suck. in my humble opinion, of course....
pooch at 1:14PM on 04/15/09
@chisai-
This post seems to be the visual to go along with Paula Deen is Trying to Kill Us, Part 2.
MollieBeth at 1:28PM on 04/15/09
This is so disgusting. I absolutely would NEVER wish harm or bad health on anyone ... but is the garbage she cooks going to be pointed out as the culprit when she ends up with health problems?
I don't watch her show, but something makes me doubt that there are addages like "this is really high fat so it doesn't qualify as every-day food, but sometimes you just want some greasy comfort food and this fits the bill"?
joyyy at 1:29PM on 04/15/09
Paula gets into some dark stuff, man.
JudgeFudge at 1:36PM on 04/15/09
I love her expression at 14 seconds in...it's saying "okay, this is getting out of hand, ya'll".
Smoosh at 1:42PM on 04/15/09
And the sponsor for this video is Asics - "Sound Mind, Sound Body"...now that's funny.
marsbar at 1:46PM on 04/15/09
Does this really surprise anyone? I've seen that sassy southerner wrap just about everything in bacon. Once her son even wrapped pretzels in bacon!
bitchinlifestyle at 2:29PM on 04/15/09
this should be on thisiswhyyourefat.com
elron at 2:29PM on 04/15/09
You come up with crap like this because you have a serious need for attention or smoke a lot of weed. When she dies of a heart attack - I will not be surprised. The sad thing is she is going to take all her family members with her.
VAHam at 2:40PM on 04/15/09
Looks really good, I think I would use thin sliced ham or parcook the bacon though. Doesn't really look done.
To all the naysayers, if you think it's too unhealthy, don't eat it.
ratbuddy at 2:47PM on 04/15/09
@elron-- that has got to be the grossest (is that even a word? oh well, it fits) site I've ever seen.
beth1 at 2:56PM on 04/15/09
Have any of you watched her make a "healthy" meal after the holiday season? I don't usually watch her show but I happened to catch the episode.
I cracked up because all she was doing was substituting regular mayo and regular sour cream with low fat versions. I forgot what she was making (didn't look appetizing), but they did not seem healthy. at all.
hmw0029 at 2:59PM on 04/15/09
@VAHam - I think there's a lot more going on than a possible Paula Deen pothead - most of the folks I know who smoke make WAY better food than this when they're lit.
joyyy at 3:16PM on 04/15/09
Pooch,
She's one step ahead of you...

The fat and/or sugar in every Paula Deen recipe I have seen has made it of zero interest to me. Not just a health concern, but her sickeningly sweet and/or fatty dishes just do not sound the least bit appetizing to me.
Lorenzo at 4:46PM on 04/15/09
I think she missed an opportunity here...first wrap the mac & cheese squares with kraft plastic cheese, then the bacon. More fatty mouth feel.
bessfour at 4:53PM on 04/15/09
I think my arteries hardened just looking at that....forget about actually eating it.
cafire at 5:40PM on 04/15/09

alosha7777 at 6:48PM on 04/15/09
well, i'll be dang, y'all -- deep fried lasagna. my poor nona would be rolling in her grave if she ever heard of that one.
pooch at 10:19PM on 04/15/09
So I'm in the minority, but, YUM!
hkydiva at 12:33PM on 04/16/09
I would try this dish exactly once. I don't care how good it is, this is a once only kind of thing. It sounded good until chisai pointed out the soggy bacon grease - yuck!
Also, is there anyway to get rid of that M&M's commercial on the side bar. I yelled it at my T.V. last night and I'll yell it at my computer today: I am not and do not want to be sexually attracted to my snack foods!!
malice88alice at 2:49PM on 04/16/09
These aren't "bites," they're BRICKS. They should be renamed Heart Attack Bricks.
minoric at 3:24PM on 04/16/09
@JudgeFudge: dark, dark stuff. I'm waiting for her to deep fry and bacon wrap a sound or something.
parsnap at 4:28PM on 04/16/09
is it just me or does Paula look like she finds this whole endeavor hilarious? I'm not entirely certain she's pulling a fast one on us, but something tells me she's not eating fried mac 'n cheese on a regular basis and is more in on the joke than we think. Whether the side-effect of people actually reproducing this dish is worth the joke is another matter, but I think anyone who looks at bacon-wrapped macaroni cheese crispies and thinks "now I know what to make for dinner!" has more problems than we can blame on Paula.
tortor at 4:46PM on 04/16/09
Gosh, some of you guys are real jerks.
Prairie at 1:13AM on 04/17/09
I second tortor's theory!
GumdropMenace at 6:13PM on 04/18/09
@pooch: yummy! deep-fried brownies?!?!
I'll get back to y'all with the deliciously gooey results!
wheatfoot at 8:29PM on 04/18/09
tame compared to her recipe for deep fried cranberry sauce. first ingredient? 1 can of cranberry sauce. she is sad.
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/deep-fried-cranberry-sauce-fritters-recipe/index.html
or, her recipe for deep-fried bagel sandwich where she deep fries each element of a lox-n-cheese on a bagel, including deep-frying the bagel, the capers and the tomatoes. she does NOT deep-fry the lox tho.
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/paula-deen/deep-fried-bagel-sandwich-recipe/index.html
avisualperson at 6:23PM on 04/19/09
@Prairie, you could walk into any room populated by at least one person anywhere in the world and make the same statement... And be right more often than not. What's your point?
ratbuddy at 3:07PM on 04/20/09
Hey look!!!
It's the Ugly American!
And to think you thought that stuff was over and done with....
Pointy at 8:37PM on 04/21/09
It seems as if Paula's current recipes are out for "shock value", not to mention a certain "gross" factor... To be fair, I have tried some of her recipes' when she first came out and some were good and some were "not so good" but lately, it seems as if she is going for pure "shock" value.
To tell you the truth, I feel kind of bad for her. She's already done the "I'm just a good old southern girl" routine and I feel like the network is trying to find another nitch for her and its just not working. Try something else people.
ddvierra68 at 5:07PM on 04/22/09
Please tell me this was intended to be a very sick joke. It is very sick. Tell Paula that she should be using the new "lite lard". Southern accentes are accentuated better with a mouth full of hog lard and this lite lard extends vowels much better. Yall sounds mut better thaway. See what I mean?
things i see from the pasture at 5:50PM on 04/22/09
First, why are ANY of you whiners even on this site? Go to some other place if you don't like this kind of food, rather than attacking Paula in such a ridiculous, juvenile manner. Seriously, you need to get over yourselves and get a life. You're all stupid if you think that Paula assumes that you're going to be dumb enough to eat this on a regular basis. Hey--any of you out there ever heard the word MODERATION? Or do you not get the concept? This is a fantastic dish to make once in a while as a TREAT--I'm certain Paula's not intending for this to be eaten as daily fare. If you HAVEN'T been smart enough to get that, then you need to get off of this site and go sign up on Jenny Craig's list, who's recipes I'm sure will be much more to your liking.
We don't watch Paula expecting her to serve up "rabbit food", i.e. salad, tofu, bean sprouts, etc.. She's not your Weight-Watcher buddy or "bulimia sponsor" that you call at 3 a.m. when you're having a weak moment & want to consume half of the contents of your refrigerator because you had a bad day. We watch her 'cause she's fun, lovable & has some GREAT recipe ideas that we KNOW are probably not going to thrill your cardiologist, but, seriously, unless you're planning to devote your entire life to making all of her creations a part of your daily menu, are just fine for an occasional treat. As for those of us who appreciate good recipes, Paula Deen is a WONDERFUL lady and NOT the anti-Christ. It's okay to eat this kind of stuff occasionaly. GROW UP.
P.S. Here's a dessert to go along with this for all you food-phobic bulimics/anorexics/whatever: bacon cinnamon rolls. Eat up!
Lizzie_Sparrow at 5:42PM on 04/25/09
A drug store on every corner and you expect me not to eat what I like? Those drug dealers will save you, don't worry . Paula's recipes are pure pleasure and fun. Those who think we will die eating this food watch too many health shows. Saddness & worry cause disease, not food. Leave this great cook alone!! We learn to make our own junk food from Paula!!
floriidamama at 6:44PM on 04/26/09
Definitely over the top but i've had John Fleer's fried mac and cheese and it was divine... not greasy...beautiful.
lgault at 2:05PM on 04/27/09
Brad at Deadpan Inc. knows how to top it. Yum!
Deadpan Delivery Guy at 3:12PM on 04/27/09
has anyone noticed how much thinner Paula looks lately? Maybe she finally has to watch her fat intake! I for one won't be eating fried lasagna, deep fried mac&cheese, fried butter balls or any of her other heart stopping recipes but she is a fun lady to watch and an animal lover. I just hope she doesn't feed this food to her dogs, it might be considered animal cruelity.
merlyn at 7:10PM on 04/27/09
Man, there's some serious hatin' going on here. I personally think the idea of deep-fried mac and cheese is astoundingly awesome. I am all about the occasional over the top snacking. And yeah, her expression 14 seconds in says it all.
