Salmonella Found in Raw Alfalfa Sprouts
Before you buy or make that sprout-laden salad or sandwich for lunch today, please be sure to avoid alfalfa sprouts. From the FDA:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [on April 26] recommended that consumers not eat raw alfalfa sprouts, including sprout blends containing alfalfa sprouts, until further notice because the product has been linked to Salmonella serotype Saintpaul contamination. Other types of sprouts have not been implicated at this time.

Given the multiple events of samonella found in sprouts and their ease of cultivation I've stopped buying them and sprout them myself.
All you need is a canning jar, seeds and a screened lid. You can usually find all at a health food store. Very easy. Very economical.
They last far, far longer and don't have that "musty" flvaor that store bought ones sometimes have.

Thanks, CJ, for making that point! Once again, like the pistachio and peanut contamination, it's not the food itself but the processing that's the problem. Here's a link on how to sprout seeds at home.

The contamination source with sprouts is actually often the seeds themselves, not the processing. That's why we have periodic breakouts of contamination despite increased safety precautions.
