Remembering Bea Arthur and Her Leg of Lamb

20090428-beaarthurqb.jpgActress Bea Arthur, who died over the weekend, will live on in Golden Girls reruns and her leg of lamb recipe. When she used to perform her one-woman show Bea Arthur On Broadway: Just Between Friends, she'd stroll onto stage and say, "I'd like to talk to you about lamb. Specifically, leg of..." She liked smothering hers with olive oil, dijon mustard, ground ginger, garlic, and rosemary or basil. [via The Amateur Gourmet]

I just read both of these links from Adam's site and loved the anecdotes. These are my favorite stories about people...the little things. My mother and I were just discussing Bea Arthur yesterday and how she was bigger than life (not just literally!). It's a shame we have to wait till these people pass on to discuss and ruminate over their accomplishments. Sure, she was just an actress but she was more than that to a lot of people. Hell, she was MAUDE.

I have always loved this woman since I first laid eyes on her. Her presence, her humor, the way she carried herself, they all indicated an undeniable underlying intelligence, intelligence I freely admit to being jealous of. My mother called me on Saturday, and, not thinking, said my grandmother had died. I immediately thought my actual, genetically-linked grandmother, of course, and froze. While my mom quickly corrected herself, I was still as affected when I realized she was actually talking about Bea. I am almost embarrased about that...almost! Goodbye, Bea. I'll think of you each morning I'm able to turn on the Hallmark Channel and hear your intro!

@molly - That is very sweet! You should never be embarrassed about the way you feel about anything or anyone...whether you knew this person or not. It just shows that you are a passionate and thoughtful person. Someone, I am sure, is very much loved by friends and family. ; )

That's what "celebrities" (and I use the term very generously) today don't even begin to understand...that ability to reach through whatever their chosen medium may be and touch someone. It's not about them , it's about how they made other people feel...like MollyKate... Most food "celebrities" (used even more generously...LOL) would do well to understand that, too.
