Photo of the Day: Salmiakki Ice Cream

While browsing through the Serious Eats Flickr pool, this photo of a bitten chocolate-covered popsicle against a bright blue sky caught my eye as a sign of relief from the sweaty summer days to come. But upon closer look...wait, that's not chocolate-flavored—it's salmiakki-flavored, or salty licorice! And it has a licorice core! Oh sweet Jesus, that poor vanilla ice cream.

Of course, if I loved licorice (and I wish I possessed such power; it makes me a bit sad to dislike a whole category of sweets) I would be singing a different tune. Alas, my taste buds have not developed a licorice-loving part yet. I'll give it a try if I'm ever in Finland.

Oh my goodness, I so miss salmiakki ice cream. When I was there last summer, I realized how delicious licorice could be. I didn't get quite used to the salmiakki candy itself, but I still dream about the ice cream.

I don't know how well I would like the salty flavor added to licorice, but the thought of black licorice and vanilla ice cream sounds WONDERFUL. I would love to try this sometime, and I may have to fake it with some good licorice and ice cream myself soon, even if it is not quite the same.

Mmm licorice!! Err, wait, salty?

Somewhat tangential, I'll have to get some anise pizzelle and vanilla ice cream today!

That sounds goooooooood...

Salty licorice is odd, yet somehow addictive.

My god that brought back horrible memories from Finland. When I was there, my friends went nuts for salmiakki. I almost puked after downing a shot of it. I wasn't expecting it to taste like somone accidentally dumped a carton of salt into a bottle of black sambucca. Truly awful stuff.

there's a ice cream place in seattle offering a salted licorice flavor.
@michaelkroe, brings back horrible memories from amsterdam when i visited "coffee shops" and then the grocery store for munchies, and instead of delicious candy, i had a mouth full of bitter, salty licorice. yuck.

Salmiakki definitely is not for everyones taste and there are huge differences between different salmiakkis. Salty liquorice does not tell it all.

I do love deeply some of salmiakki, like Tyrkisk Peber and hate some so much I don't want anything to do with them. It's a complex delicacy. In ice cream I find it gross, but with chocolate oh so fantastic!

So, greetings from Finland :)

@jammarita: Thanks for the info! I definitely do not want the hate-worthy stuff.
