Regarding the Heinz Ketchup Bottle

20090413-heinzketchup.jpgAlice Rawsthorn describes the form and function of the glass Heinz ketchup bottle and why it's so popular despite not being effective as a dispenser. For bottle variations, see this slideshow.

I dare you to find the glass bottle in a supermarket. A local burger joint was nice enough to give us a couple of "restaurant-only" bottles at a recent visit, which we re-use now. The Heinz bottle is like a big ketchup hug.

A friend of ours gave us a case of shorter, squatter--and I believe 12-oz--glass Heinz bottles. The opening is much wider so the ketchup flows well. Heinz' online store site (heinzstuff.com) is down right now, but they probably have it on there.

As for the regular, tall glass bottle--maybe it's popular for restaurants that are essentially giving away the ketchup and thus trying to limit "overpour?"

The glass Heinz bottle is classic. If you cannot ge the ketchup to come out, just smack the bottle with your palm right on the "57's" that are etched into the glass at teh half point of the bottle. The ketchup will flow out very easily. This is why there are little "57's" etched into the glass. Try it... That's an old waiter trick...

I was going to add what nhh2727 posted. My cousin taught me this ages ago(waitress), and it works better than a squeeze bottle. I have always gotten a kick out of those who poke knifes in the bottle, or shake them really fast. The look on their face is classic when you show them the 57 trick.

Check out this old post! Despite it saying that you have to place the order before November 3rd 2006 (!?!?), I just placed one for 3 customized 14oz bottles! I am psyched!
