In Videos: Asparagus (A Stalk-umentary)

20090422stalkumentary.jpg

Asparagus! Stalking the American Life is a documentary film by Kirsten Kelly and Anne de Mare about the self-proclaimed Asparagus Capital of the Nation and host of the National Asparagus Festival, Oceana County, Michigan. Asparagus! explores how this small rural community has been impacted by International trade agreements which have made imported asparagus cheaper, putting Oceana County's asparagus farms at risk.

A preview of the documentary after the jump. Don't miss the story of the "Asparagus Disco" starting at 2:08.

Those are the cutest asparagus children I've seen by far.

This is so awesome! I love weird little pockets of culture like this.

cool2bars: you totally beat me to the punch--those asparagus costumes slay me!

haha I love the little old ladies asparagus sweater!
I'd love a pattern like that on my dish towels.

There should be an ode to white asparagus here somwhere...

I loved that post. Makes me want to personally take a trip up to Oceana County and single-handedly keep those guys in business. Support local farms!!!!

I caught this film at the Food for Thought Film Festival in NYC this past weekend and loved it! I never thought I would get so into asparagus but it really was a fascinating look at the politics behind the vegetable and Oceana, the self-proclaimed "Asparagus Capitol of the World." I'd highly recommend it if they are ever showing it in your area.

The movie also showed me there is an endless bounty of asparagus paraphernalia-- stainless steel asparagus sink stop, anyone??
