Look Who's Talkin': Recent Comments We Have Known and Loved
There's so much to keep up with in Talk that we almost can't keep up. If you're in the same boat, here's a small selection of topics and responses that have piqued our interest this week.
Alice Waters on '60 Minutes'...The Interview
"I just feel like while she certainly tries to understand class issues, she just doesn't get it. On a purely personal level, she strikes me as someone who hasn't gone without for large stretches of time, and thus can't really wrap her head around the enormity and complexity of the economic issues for many people. JMO as always." —BangieB
"... And no, it's not always possible or easy to get to a farmer's market, but it sure is getting a lot easier, and that's in large part because of the influence of people like Ms. Waters. Maybe she does have her head in the clouds a little, but it takes people like that to make the changes she has...." —WhatsCookin
How to Reduce Your Water Consumption
"I tried filling my mid-sized passenger car with water, and it held only 750 gallons, so I doubt the veracity of this piece (perhaps if I let the passengers out?). Finally, the article fails to point out that water footprints are a lot easier to clean up than carbon footprints." —Don Luis
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast Blues
"It is time for you to marsala, masala, arroz con and fajita. I can do just about any damn thing with chicken. Chicken should never be a downer. Boneless chicken can be rondelles (rolled up combos) too. Spinach and a cheese, cordon bleu. When I make fajitas I marinate overnight in lime juice, cumin, ancho chili pepper and a good shot of spanish olive oil." —JerzeeTomato
Serious Efforts: Planting a Vegetable Garden
"Your herb containers sound just fine (the coco liners), and neither cilantro or basil should crowd each other out. Both do best with frequent snipping....don't let the cilantro leaves get to a feathery stage, and don't let the basil bloom. Check the material of the barrel planters before planting veggies....treated woods, walnut, and some others can adversely affect (kill) tomatoes, and may leach unwanted flavors into the soil. A sturdy plastic or glazed ceramic might serve you better. Look for bush variety tomatoes...you will still need a stake and a little twine for support, but they only get to about 5-6' tall, perfect for containers." —Cary
Going on Dates Just for the Food
"If the food, drink, conversation and manners are great, he gets another chance. If only the food and drink are good, I might go there with another contender. :-)" —PerkyMac
What I Like About the Corn Syrup Commercials
"The only problem with the HFCS commercials is that the tag line 'like sugar, it's fine in moderation,' is a virtual Catch 22. It's not possible to consume HFCS in moderation because it's in so many food products an average shopper might not suspect. A good rule of thumb is to remember that HFCS is generally found in extremely processed foods. Just avoid them and eat real food. Problem solved." —therealchiffonade
Pizza Pan Help
"To cut down on floury mess in our small apt kitchen I've been putting the pizza on parchment paper. Slides right off the peel onto the stone and nothing to clean up after." —Mike Fox
Grocery Shopping: Do You Choose Lines Based on Checkers?
"I really try to avoid the self-check most of the time. It's another way to eliminate workers' jobs. I do occasionally find there are checkers I avoid, mostly because they're long-winded and want to chat with Mr. Meatloaf about topics they're both interested in. But generally, it's shortest line factored with emptiest carts." —lemons
Serious Efforts: Deer Neck
"Use cheap knives. With the vertebrae, expect to bend one. About four vertebrae (with meat around the bone) make a very tasty meat and veggie soup.... I have divided my neck into two parcels - vertebrae with meat surrounding, this makes wonderful stew meat. The other parcel has gone through my meat grinder, at a finer grind, and has gone into chili, burgers, meatloaf, you name it. Once you get used to the flavor, it can be used just the same as any other ground meat." —hatchetgirl
