Costco Is Selling French Winter Black Truffles

For $99.99, you can order two ounces of French-imported Winter Black truffles or Périgord Truffles (Tuber melanosporum) from Costco. Item # 394884.
Uniquely the only type of truffle without a tan flesh, these winter marvels have a black or chocolate colored flesh and carry an aroma that is out of this world! These gastronomic treats flourish from January through March when the black truffles have their most intense aroma. These truffles arrive fresh from France having been picked and delivered within a week of leaving the rich soil.
Costco will deliver them via UPS 2nd Day Air. As our friend mulegirl said best: "If anyone ever asks you to explain the difference between Costco and Walmart." Now you have an answer.

The price they are asking for is the same as what you will find at purveyors such as Mikuni Wild Harvest or SOS Chefs. I'd rather buy from people in the mushroom and truffle business who are focused on the product than from a huge company that sells everything from diapers to vitamins to huge jars of mayonnaise etc.

This should be right up there with coffins as the craziest items sold by Costco.

I agree with Simon... but I am afraid I will succumb to the big box convenience, if only for my obsession with truffle aioli that I can't get out of my head ever since I heard Costco was selling them. What a dilemma!

It doesn't seem to be featured on the Costco website anymore. Is this an in-store-only special?
P.S. I think Costco is a 100x better than Walmart's Sam's club.

@arathi: Weird! They must be sold-out. Here's Google's cache of the page so you can live in the past for a little.

The term "winter black" and "Tuber melanosporum" are not interchangeable. There are many "black" truffles that grow during the winter, but Tuber melanosporum is the highly prized, black "diamond of the Perigord." Unfortunately the season ended at Feb 28th. I would have loved to have seen some of these as I DO grow the real thing.
