Boxed Water, Like Bottled Water But With Trees

20090316-boxedwater.jpgBoxed Water is Better is a boxed water company/art project/philanthropic project that developed from the idea of "creating a new bottled water brand that is kinder to the environment and gives back a bit." The containers are composed 90 percent of trees, and 20 percent of profits are donated to water and forestation organizations. Boxed Water is available in select stores in Michigan. [via BuzzFeed]

So they are cutting down trees to make the boxes, and then giving the money back to forestation organizations? How about we don't cut down the trees in the first place and just put filters on our home spigots and stop buying bottled/packaged water all together??

@ juliebugsmama

You said it, sister. What's the big deal with drinking tap water anyway?

"..we found that it shouldn't be bottled at all, but instead, boxed." No, it shouldn't be packaged at all. It's a natural resource, not a commodity. "We really care about the world's water supply. 10% of our profit is donated to world water relief foundations." Which charities are they giving to, and how do I know if I agree with the policies of these foundations? I also noticed that they make no mention of the quality of water in the carton. They don't discuss the source, if it's filtered municipal water (like Disani and Aquafina) or "Spring" water (like Poland Spring) Are they drawing it out of Lake Michigan? I'm sorry, I won't buy into your art project.

Ugh. If they thought about the environment at all, they wouldn't be boxing water, since both the manufacturing and shipping processes consume vast amounts of energy and further global warming. Art project? Lame.

The sheer stupidity of these people makes me feel physically ill. Saving trees by cutting them down? Whether or not they come from well-managed forests, cutting down a tree is still cutting down a tree, and bottled water is one of the worst things you can buy in terms of cost/benefit to your health and the environment. You can argue that some people rely on bottled water, but I can guarantee that nearly 100% of the markets these people are aiming at (upper to upper-middle in big cities) already have drinkable tap water. What a sham. They should be ashamed of themselves.

juliebugsmama said it best.

At the very least, these guys should be using recycled paper boxes. I 'll also give them credit that at least it's not a plastic bottle. If you just had to choose, damned if you do, damned if you don't, but at least you have new choice.
