Birds Stealing Ice Cream Cones

20090305-birdsteal.jpg

I love this photo gallery of birds stealing ice cream at a seaside esplanade. Look at that rascal above; you can practically see the greed in his eyes.

And, at least for a moment, this poor woman is blissfully oblivious to the carnage going on. [via MetaFilter]

This reminds me of the brazenly opportunistic gulls in Wildwood, New Jersey, where two miles of greasy boardwalk fare (including the delicious Sam's Pizza Palace, above) keeps them well-fed.

I remember getting a lunchtime phone call from my girlfriend, who had gone down the shore a day ahead of me. "A bird just stole my sandwich! I put it down on the bench to go get napkins, and when I came back, a gull was eating it! And the carnies were laughing!"

What did she do? Stole the sandwich back, broke off the gull-eaten half, and ate the remainder.

@Adam I'm looking at gulls as I type this. They are half the size as the one pictured above. Gull on 'roids? What the hell is in that ice cream?

This reminds me of eating on the wall at Revere Beach (correctly pronounced "Ra-veeah") right in front of Kelly's Roast Beef. They have the absolute BEST fried clams on the planet, but they are not cheap! So it's always a battle to protect those crispy fried succulent morsels of seafood goodness from the greedy beaks of the seagulls. It's part of the charm of the dining experience though. And I miss it.

From the pics, its for certain Europe--likely Germany or Netherlands. These are most certainly Herring Gulls (which we have here too)...they are one of the largest and quite brazen! Great photos. Those cones look really good (at least before the gulls got to them!)

That made me laugh. It looks like they were all taken on the same boardwalk, and it looks suspiciously like the same bird. Evil, evil bird!

guy at the top probably should be thanking the bird. he needs no more ice cream.

oh those pictures just made my day. hilarious!

@finsbigfan I lived in Florida my entire life, and I was *amazed* when I moved to California and learned that the Pacific seagulls there are about four times larger than Gulf Coast seagulls. There are just some massive seagull species in the world!

I saw these pictures going around yesterday, well the second photo, anyway. The people sending it were more concerned with the man behind the lady. And what's going on there with his pants.

I live by the beach in Santa Cruz, CA so this cracks me up! We were at an outside restaurant the other day having breakfast and a seagull swooped down quick and tried to eat off my son's plate and he said "Mom, that bird tried to jack my bacon!" Sooo funny! :) Watch out for those sneaky birds!

She didn't need that second cone anyway.

i went down to venice beach with my boyfriend and a bunch of stale krispy kreme doughnuts to feed seagulls with (since we didn't want to waste them). we were surrounded by over FIFTY seagulls of varying shapes, colours, and sizes in about five minutes. and some of them are the hugest birds ever.

This so reminds me of one of my favorite vacation stories. We were at sea world in San Diego. My 7 year cousin had just gotten a churros and a sea gull grabbed it out of his hands in mid flight. Later on at lunch a sea gull dive bombed my dad who was carrying a lunch tray of 3 plates of pasta and it went everywhere!!!

I'm thinking of a certain Alfred Hitchcock movie. Wonder where he got the inspiration??

I had a gull try this once at a restaurant near Point Loma in San Diego. Poor thing. It had to permanently retire afterwards. ;)

@ilikedginger~had to scroll back up to look OMG LOL; thanks for the...uh..."TIP"!

years ago we lived in California and we played golf every Sunday morning, well after the ninth hole we would get a hamburger or hot dog and a beer and go to the tenth tee. If you left your sandwich on the seat of the cart to go and tee off, when you got back it would be gone or nearly gone. The birds knew. And would wait. And zap---- they never seemed to fill up!
