Top Movies Starring Chinese Food
Diana Kuan of food blog Appetite for China names her top five movies starring Chinese food: Eat, Drink, Man, Woman; A Christmas Story; My Life as McDull; Rice Rhapsody; and The Joy Luck Club. I would also add one of my favorite movies, the comedy God of Cookery directed by Stephen Chow. If you haven't seen it before, watch an introductory clip after the jump. In true Stephen Chow style, it's out there, but that doesn't even begin to cover the scope of the whole movie. What other movies would you add to this list?

I love The Joy Luck Club – especially that bit where the boyfriend drowns the communal plate of something in soy sauce. Such a cringe-worthy scene.
The Lost Boys had Chinese food in it, turned me off fried rice for awhile.
As an Australian, seeing that you guys eat Chinese food in those white take-out boxes was exciting – so much so that when on holiday in NYC we had to order in Chinese just to get the experience.

I think you forgot The Chinese Feast, which is a great food flick.

That movie is like nothing else...I just watched all 11 parts. Thanks Robyn! Now I want to try some Sorrowful Rice!

There was some food action (involving flying man tou) in Shaolin Soccer, also directed by Stephen Chow.

You're awesome Robyn! LOVE The God of Cookery! I know it doesn't count as a movie but the anime Cooking Master Boy is genius!

God of Cookery looks awesome -- will definitely check it out. This isn't Chinese, but I'd have to recommend the Korean movie "Le Grande Chef" if you're really into Asian food movies. It's unbelievable.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (the opening scene). Though I'm not sure how much food you actually see.

@Yamoo: You don't have cute Chinese take-out boxes over there? :( I love those boxes.
@tina_eats: WOOHOO, I have influenced you. ;)
@hotfoodporn, ManDiner, yoyodyne, justcook: Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to check em out.
@chocoholic: Assuming that's another movie suggestion...thanks!
@andshewas: Yup, Diana mentioned it in her top five list.

I'm surprised this movie hasn't been released in the US yet considering Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer did well. Not in theaters...but at least as a DVD or something.

Tampopo (although it's a Japanese movie) is the best!

Yes! I love the "God of Cookery." Exploding pissing beef balls would be so much fun to eat!

@justcook: Le Grand Chef was great - just watched it all online! I really enjoy Korean dramas and that film was perfect.
@roboppy: you have no idea how much you've influenced me, muwahahaha ;o)
There should be a new Academy Award category: Best Foreign Food Film.

"My Favorite Year." The main character, Benjy, says "Jews know two things: suffering, and where to find great Chinese food."

You're right...there should be an Oscar for Best Foreign Food Film. Though NYC already has a food film festival.
