Top Chef: Tom Colicchio Doesn't Hate Toby Young

20090225-tom-young.jpg

On his relationship with Toby Young: "A lot of people were like 'Oh, I can tell Tom hates Toby.' I actually got along with him really well. To get some fresh blood is nice. He's actually quite charming and funny and witty, and I enjoyed having him around so I don’t know why people think I hate him." [Time]

Maybe the reason why people think Tom hates Toby is because every time Toby says something on the show Tom rolls his eyes or gives him a look of disdain. I see it. You do too.

I find him to be completely superfluous to the show. It's like he write this one liners ahead of time and just throws them out where he sees fit.

I hate Toby.

His comments are gimmicky and when he makes the he appears to be deeply self-satisfied with his own cleverness. Only problem - he's not clever. He's trite. What's worse is Toby never seems to make a comment that's relevant to the cooking. I wince every time he opens his mouth. Thankfully the show seems to be editing him out of existence.

In the above pictures Tom and Toby look like they're at some kind of high stakes poker game, not judging a show about food.

Toby is a wanker

I hear Toby will be the new judge on American Idol.

I love Tom. Give me a diet coke and some Colicchio and I would be a happy girl!

We'll see if Toby turns up next season. My guess it that he won't.

Yeah. I hope Gail is back for good.

Body Language:
Tom: I'd love to thumb my nose (or flick a booger) at that hack prick with his stupid sound bites and little contribution, as well as the producers who thought we needed even more BS.

Toby: Hmmm. I wonder if Tom really hates me and my fresh blood? Oh, and which sneering gibe is next on my heckle and taunt list?

Toby is a bit abraisive, which I think bothered a lot of people. That much harshness was usually reserved for the wit of Anthony Bourdain. I didn't have a problem with Toby. If he stayed with the show longer, he would have meshed better with his critiques. Also, most important of all: we only see the edited version. He may have had comments you would have thought spectacular but didn't make it on to the screen.

I think they think every British critic is Simon Cowell. There is only one Simon Cowell. Toby isn't witty at all, just irritating. I hope he is not back next season. Bring on Bordain!!

Can we trust anything Tom "Diet Coke" Colicchio says anymore? How do we know Toby didn't pay him to say that? Tom's available for purchase these days.
