Look Who's Talkin': Recent Comments We Have Known and Loved
There's so much to keep up with in Talk that we almost can't keep up. If you're in the same boat, here's a small selection of topics and responses that have piqued our interest this week.
Is Anyone Here Giving Up a Certain Food for Lent?
"Brussels sprouts, lima beans, and turnips. I give them up every Lent : )" —NanaJoie
Whatever Happened to Chow Mein (Chop Suey)?
"I have to inject a story. Chow mein as a crossover dish invented by Chinese immigrants to appeal to the local populace is clearly not exclusive to New York or even the U.S. It's loved all over. When I was in Guatemala, I was informed that almost every Guatemala City housewife knows how to make a version of 'chau mein,' as it's cheap and filling, requiring only some dried noodles plus whatever else is on hand." —Lorenzo
Asparagus: What to Do?
"Even quicker than roasting: pop it under the broiler. Line them up on a sheet of aluminum foil or a baking sheet, toss with olive oil, lemon juice, salt/pepper and broil it for a few minutes - keeping a close eye on it as others have said. Or, if you're in wam enough weather - grill it!" —joyyy
Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?
"A 20-year-old can of snails and a 22-year-old can of government issue green beans. I just can't bring myself to throw them away. They are like old friends and have made the move to a dozen different homes with me." —smokey07
Paula Deen Is Pantsless
"I'm with the lighten up crowd—I enjoy watching someone who makes me laugh and is totally and completely herself. I thought she handled that with grace. She definitely did not intend to flash the audience but faced up to the fact that it happened and got on with it. My reaction was to think: 'Sometimes I just love that woman!' (And I can't be alone or she wouldn't be so popular.)" —smallblondemom
Baking Stone Sub?
"I think over time, you will decide to buy a pizza stone—I bought the terra cotta tiles at Home Depot a number of times, and while they work great, they eventually crack. Always. At a buck apiece, they will eventually add up to what you would have spent on a pizza stone. I think the pizza stone is tempered—fired at high temp—so it will be more durable, and less wasteful. I'm watching for one on sale, and it will eventually pop up somewhere, I'm sure!" —renewbee
Top Chef Result: What Do You Think? (Spoilers Ahead)
"When I saw Casey on the set with Carla, I knew it was over for her. Damn shame, too." —chardonnay
