Photo of the Day: '$169 a Pound'

20090203-belotaham.jpg

Jamón Ibérico de bellota. At $169 a pound, this is definitely a treat in this day and age. Gastrodamus says, "Let a piece sit on your tongue for a little bit to really taste the different flavors. The acorn flavor is in the fat. Should be thinly sliced with a knife, not with a machine." [via The Serious Eats Flickr Pool]

Damn, I want some.

A chef friend snuck several tiny slivers to me once. They were UNBELIEVABLY GOOD.

Damn, I want some hardwoods and black pigs.

I tried it when Despana and Dean & Deluca just got their first shipment of jamon iberico de bellota. At that time the promotional price was $100/lb and $129/lb ($10 more for hand sliced) respectively. Obviously the price increased substantially.

But it was really addictive. REALLY GOOD~ Even though D&D is cheaper I will still go to Despana because the people at D&D had no idea what they were doing and cut the delicate ham miserably. Despana is the way to go.

For $6, you can experience ham heaven? You can so count me in.

NY rules.

Haha, Philn beat me to the comment!

Long live the pig (not)

i ate a qp of that stuff once all to myself, with my bare hands. so damn good, and a bargain when compared to other stuff such as truffles.

I tried this just last week at a tasting event. I hope it'll be my last taste on earth.

drooooooool -- jamon iberico is the reason i eat pork now. i was seduced in 1999 in spain.

i have tasted it before. it is amazing. FYI, it can be found in Ohio if anyone there is interested. Dorothy Lane Market in Dayton, Ohio carries it and last I heard it was running about $90/pound.

I LOVE Iberico bellota. There's an amazing artisanal cheese shop here that also offers sandwiches, salads, cheese/pate/chutney plates for lunch, etc. They've recently started stocking Iberico bellota and it makes me go weak in the knees.

t Kyle: thanks for the tip.

A tenth of a pound is, what, four or five thin slices? $9 for a very elite treat is a good deal.

They are ridiculously expensive here in Spain also... but worth it.

OMG you people are making me hungry! Where should I go in NYC for this slice of heaven?

@TheUE: I believe the photographer purchased this at Despaña.

Ed reviewed the place here: http://newyork.seriouseats.com/2008/10/despana-spanish-food-store-sandwiches-soho-nyc.html

For that price, that slice of pig better do more than simply sit on my tounge. It needs to take me out for a night on the town and show me a good time. :o)

Everyone should go to Bocca Lupo in Brooklyn right now because they have a special with this ham COVERING A PIZZA with blue oyster mushrooms and mozzarella. It is divine.

@The UE & Adam Kuban: yes, despaña is the place. it has become a ritual to make a quick stop for the iberico de bellota any time i'm remotely close to the neighborhood. i highly recommend.

They also have it available at Fairway in Brooklyn.
