Photo of the Day: Flying Dumplings

20090204-potd-dumplings.jpg

During a dumpling-making party I held at my apartment last weekend (featuring Michele Humes' recipe), I got this neat shot of my friend Greg as he pan-fried the dumplings.* If you squint a little you can kind of pretend that the dumplings are flying out of the pan like a flock of birds. ...Use your imagination, people.

* Some dumplings may have fallen on the floor shortly after this photo was taken.

They look delish, nice shot!

I'm counting a dozen flying dumplings. An altogether over-crowded pan; no wonder they took flight and some elected an early death on the floor...I'm just sayin'

@BobbieAnne: It had more to do with how high he was tossing them than the number of dumplings there were....because they were safely off the floor until I told Greg to toss them higher for the purposes of this photo. >_

(If it helps to know, the dumplings were cooked before we fried them. We had a giant pot of boiled dumplings going then fried them to crisp em up.)

I love this photo!

How did they turn out? I was going to try the recipe this weekend.

@maggiej: Thanks!

@juliebugsmama: They were great! I changed the recipes a bit to feed more people though. And we forgot to put the cabbage in the pork dumplings..um..but then that just meant they were porkier than intended. Nothing wrong with that. With the vegetable ones, we added mushroom and probably used more kale than the recipe said. I like that there were whole edamame beans in it...gave the filling a nice chunky texture.

Great photo! We also made these on Super Bowl Sunday--the kids loved helping with them. We found they worked best when we fried them first, then added some water to the skillet and covering it quickly, to steam them the rest of the way. Tried frying them after steaming, and they just fell apart. But LOVED the finished product, and am now wishing we had made a double batch...

Love the photo, thanks for sharing it!
