Photo of the Day: Butyraceous

20090226-butyraceous.jpg

The word "butyraceous" has not appeared on Serious Eats...until now. I first saw this word last weekend while playing Cranium with some friends—it's probably the only new thing I learned from the game. My friend and I guessed the correct definition: "like butter." God knows comparisons to butter frequently come up on Serious Eats and in my daily conversations (really, it does); I ought to use this word more often. As should you.

They used this word in an episode of Psych. First season, the national spelling bee episode! I am such a geek.

@Angry Brit "...used this word in an episode of Psych".

Yeah, I saw that as well. I'm warming to this show, especially with the double episodes on Saturday afternoons for us in the UK (waiting until the next series of Monk returns).

Also, what's with the recurring pineapple that keeps showing up in that programme - or is this just an urban legend?

New favorite word.

dictionary says butyric acid: colorless, strong-smelling fatty acid found in rancid butter, perspiration, etc. could the connotation of "butyraceous" be rancid-butter smell?

@jby789 : OH NOOES MY BEAUTIFUL WORD...

I hope it doesn't refer to rancid butter. :(

aha! butyeraldehyde, butyric acid: similar but different substances, all using latin root "butyrum" — so, word NOT spoiled, butyraceous just buttery NOT rancid, pardon my etymological almost-spoiler.

@jby789: Ah, thanks for looking that up. :) ALL IS WELL NOW!

I use Sodium Butyrate in the lab...it smells so bad and permeates everything, that you must wear gloves when handling the tube.

We have an auxiliary label on the tube: Yak butter.

@Brickyardkid. I don't know what's up with the pineapple. On the disc for the 2nd season they have a gag reel with all the pineapple shots. I find it humorous, mainly because it's so out of place. If you figure it out, let me know would you?
