Pepsi to Use Real Sugar in 'Pepsi Throwback' and 'Mountain Dew Throwback' in April
Starting April 20, Pepsi will sell cans of Pepsi Throwback and Mountain Dew Throwback, which will be made with real sugar instead of HFCS. According to an email exchange today with Pepsi-Cola rep Nicole Bradley (inspired by Serious Eaters' questions): "Both products will be offered at the same price as regular Pepsi and regular Mountain Dew." The drinks will only be available until June 13.
Around the same time, Coca-Cola usually rolls out limited-edition Kosher for Passover Coke, also made with real sugar since observant Jews cannot have corn products, hence no HFCS. Many non-Jews celebrate the product as well, believing the sugar version is superior (whether for taste or health reasons).

"Many non-Jews celebrate the product as well, believing the sugar version is superior." I'm one of those people. I can't drink a whole Coke unless it's made with regular sugar. It just tastes better. The Coke from Mexico is usually corn syrup-free, by the way.

With the national trend towards "natural" foods I'm surprised that Big Soda doesn't produce lines of real-sugar product. I don't think Coke or anyone will ever go totally HFCS free but a niche product at a slight premium would sell for sure.
sailordave at 3:22PM on 02/17/09
What's this about observant jews not drinking anything made of corn? I didn't know about this. I thought pork was an issue but corn?
xutopia at 3:24PM on 02/17/09
Observant Jews don't eat most grain products during Passover, (or maybe even no grains at all?) which is different from keeping kosher, and is known as "kosher for Passover."

I cry foul, no Dr Pepper? I've been tempted to buy the cane sugar version for ages but the shipping cost always stopped me......
stonechiper at 4:18PM on 02/17/09
Mexican Coke is made with sugar. One little bottling plant in Dublin, Texas makes Dr. Pepper with sugar. There are people that buy cases of it, then smuggle it to sell in Houston and Dallas.
You can find Mexican Coke on the shelves in the grocery store here in Houston. It costs $1.20 for a 16oz glass bottle. It tastes really good.

I will have to try the Dew variety when it is released.
I'd probably prefer Mexi-Coke to the sugar free Pepsi.
Carnal at 5:36PM on 02/17/09
interesting that they are being offered at the same price, when HFCS is cheaper. i wonder if this is a test, to see how big a market for sugar only version exists.
spartana07 at 6:02PM on 02/17/09
It was my understanding that the price of HFCS has risen significantly, and that there is an environmental backlash against using it

i want to see what all the fuss is about...

Look forward to trying the Pepsi. I'm assuming it's not going to have a surcharge for decent ingredients.

Here in Israel, regular Coke (don't know about Pepsi or RC since I don't drink it) is made with sugar. Unfortunately you can't get caffeine-free regular Coke here :(
Kmelion at 6:10AM on 02/18/09
I just wanted to clarify that not all Mexican Coke is made with sugar. I had heard that, then went to a local Mexican grocery store and the glass bottles—labeled imported from mexico—was made with HFCS
mattycakes at 4:19PM on 02/18/09
@mattycakes: I have seen a occasional Mexican Coke with HFCS, but I said 'usually' made with sugar in comment #1. Thankfully most of the corn in Mexico goes to making tortillas, not corn syrup. I always assumed that is why their sodas are made with sugar. Might require further research, as in a vacation south of the border, to verify my suspicions.

Real sugar Coke is the way to go! I buy a couple two liter bottles at Passover every year and bring it out when I need a treat. I also buy the Dr. Brown's cream soda that is made for Passover with real sugar then.

Sure, Pepsi can offer Pepsi and Mountain Dew made with sugar, but they are forgetting one major factor: bottling in glass. My specialty soda shop offers Pepsi from Mexico made with sugar, and tastes (and lasts longer on the shelf) than anything that comes in a plastic bottle or aluminum can. Sadly, Mountain Dew is no longer available in most markets in glass bottles. Most of my customers agree that soda just tastes better in glass, whether if the soda is made with sugar of HFCS. Of course, sugar-based sodas taste that much better, even if the soda companys beg to disagree.
Mexican Coke, one of our best sellers, proves this point. Dublin Dr Pepper, too, which we sell about 40 cases per month. Eventually, the major soda companies will catch on. If you really want sugar-base Coke, Pepsi, Dr Pepper or other, just visit thesodagallery.com. We ship anywhere in the USA, and have some of the best shipping rates than anyone else.

C'mon Pepsi & Coke. Have this stuff available year round. I am tired of importing mine from Mexico. Ditto Dr. Pepper. I love the sugar-based Dr. Pepper from Dublin, TX, but having it shipped up winds up costing almost $3 per 8oz. bottle.
I only buy sugar-based soda (Crater Lake Cream Soda is my current favorite).
elswinger at 3:12AM on 02/20/09
You can sometimes buy the Mexican Coca-Cola here in northern CA at Costco but it is about 5 dollars more per case. That plus the CRV makes a big price difference to my wallet, so I seldom buy it. If the Throwback versions become available in my small town, I will definitely stock up!
skyeyes at 11:29PM on 02/20/09
Maybe the limited offer is a test to see if people will buy it before rolling out a premium line? Too bad its not coke, I prefer it and mexican coca-cola is sooo much better than the stuff here.

I joined so I could say that changing from Coke w/ sugar to New Coke was one of the stupidest moves of the last century. How I miss the real Classic Coke! (Serious Cokaholic). Pepsi only won the challenge because on the first sip, it's ultra sweet, after that--sickening. Coke was actually just as popular as Pepsi, only more expensive to produce due to using real sugar; they only changed to HFCS to rival Pepsi's higher profit margin. For shame, greedy Coke! One of the best tastes on earth, gone! Btw, HFCS is largely responsible for serious weight gain in this generation and is in almost all processed food. Check it out and avoid it.
cstein at 4:26PM on 02/22/09
Haven't you seend the ads on Food Network?! HFCS is made from corn and, just like sugar, is fine in moderation... haha, too funny!!
cstein: coke tastes like battery acid.... let the pepsi vs coke wars begin. ;)

My son (now 21) has had a corn allergy most of his life. I always used to tuck away a few extra bottles of "Kosher for Passover" real sugar coke for him to enjoy during the rest of the year. I didn't want him drinking "diet" drinks just to avoid corn syrup.
To this day he doesn't drink much soda. But when he wants a treat, it has to be corn-syrup free REGULAR coke squirreled away during Passover!
GuaranteedGF at 3:53PM on 02/23/09
Jews eat grains on Passover, but only unleavened, hence matza. The corn problem is something called kitniyot, and applies to rice and certain legumes as well.

I'm a regular Mt Dew drinker (allergic to coffee and cola - need to get my caffeine somewhere!), but in Mexico I couldn't find any. After getting over the caffeine withdrawl, I started drinking Squirt. Yum. Tasted just like carbonated, slightly sweetened grapefruit. And wouldn't you know - it listed grapefruit extract as an ingredient, along with, of course, sugar. So this is my new favorite drink. I get home but a case, and yuck. No sparkly grapefruit flavor and that icky bitter aftertaste that I now realize is a constant is American sodas. I figure the HFCS is the culprit for the aftertaste, and the total lack of grapefruit anything whatsoever explains the rest of the problem. Fortunately, I have left my caffeine needs behind, so Poopsi completely lost a customer with that one.

There is also a bottling plant in West Jefferson, NC that bottles Dr. Pepper AND Mountain Dew with sugar instead of HFCS. I drive there all the time on the way to visit my brother to pick up cases of both. It's $15.75 for a case of twenty-four 12oz bottles. I used to get Dr. Pepper shipped to me from the Dublin plant all the time, but since I discovered the NC plant I don't any more, of course. Here is the address:
2614 NC Highway 163, West Jefferson, NC 28694
Here are a couple of pics I took of the place:

Has anyone beenable to purchase the throwback. I have tried my local Shoprite and Stop and Shop to no avail. Help I want to try it before the deadline.

I found the Pepsi singles in the convenience store in our building at 1600 Smith, Houston, Texas.

Are they REALLY stopping the Throwback sodas on June 13? Are they crazy? BTW be VERY wary of Passover Coke. For the past two years they have NOT used sugar - they have used SUCROSE. They simply will do whatever they can to avoide spending any extra money on sugar. They stink.
PeteRFNY at 9:43PM on 05/25/09
Sucrose or table sugar is obtained from sugar cane or sugar beets.
Sucrose IS real sugar :) heh.

I know a lot of people that travel to mexico regularly, some of whom lived there for many years. Everyone always says mexican coke is better, now i know why.
So that awful nasty taste in coke and pepsi is the sweetener? =/ Eweh.. The only soda i really like is Root Beer...
Looks like I missed my chance to try this throwback stuff but I'm not sure I really care that I don't like soda :) Better for my bones and fat cells. Hehe.
CloverNancy at 2:09PM on 06/15/09
Something I forgot to say (>.
The change from saying "Sugar" on the label to "Sucrose" is probably due to a recent change in regulations that states that the manufacturers have to use the scientific name for the ingredient. Drinks with added vitamins have ingredient lists that look horrifying until you look them up and discover that it's just the vitamins. :)
here's a list of common vitamins if anyone's interested

Our local Publix tells me that Pepsi Throwback will soon be off the shelves, being only a summer item. Is that true?
