In Videos: Depression Cooking with Clara
Depression Cooking seems to be making the rounds on all the blogs again. I thought that we blogged about this gem of a video series before, but I think I'm just remembering the link that Moibec posted about in Talk back in October.
Well, if you haven't seen it yet, meet 93-year-old Clara, who cooks up meals from the Depression. In the one here (after the jump) she cooks "Poorman's Meal"—a hash of potatoes, hot dogs, onion, etc.—for her appreciative grandson and his friends.

This recipe is similar to something that I grew up with. Both my grandmother's made this recipe but being hispanic, would serve it up alongside with tortillas, eggs and beans. Love this and I love Clara! She reminds me of my gram's who are no longer with us but are from Clara's generation. Always thought it was a hispanic dish, but I guess it was probably a depression dish!

This lady is awesome. And her videos make such a change from the frivolous way in which terms like "recession", "depression", and "in this economy" are bandied about today, usually by people who have not yet lost their jobs and are therefore still in a position to use these terms frivolously.

Oh, man. She's amazing.

I dig Clara. Interesting to me is her use of potatoes. My family ate pasta with everything and they never ate "amerigon" hot dogs.
Out there are so many elderly americans who lived through the depression and they are getting up there. So much experience so many great stories.

my grandmother's depression meal was something she called "oogli." she would make what she called drop dumplings--flour, egg, water, and salt mixed up and dropped into boiling water and cooked through. she would then fry them up with boiled potatoes in chopped onions and margarine. she was always tickled by how much her grandkids LOVED this meal. they hated it as kids because they were poor, and it was all they could afford to eat.

@carriebwc -- the dumplings for the oogli sounds like the dumplings my mom (who would be Clara's age) put in potato soup. Oogli sounds intersting.

BTW, She's 91, not 93.

"she", not "She".

@alesbica: Here, I'm going to out-anal you. She's 91 in the video but is 93 right now, at least according to her YouTube page and her own site's About page.

She is adorable. The true salt of the earth. I wish you could go out and buy a Clara today. She'd be affordable, no frills and would perform indefinitely.
