Portland, Oregon's Front Yard Taco Truck

How 'bout this? Portland, Oregon, taco truck owners Gabina Lopez and Chencho Martinez parked their mobile kitchen on the street next to their home and then built a dining area in their front yard for customers.

Now free of debt, Martinez had borrowed from his brother to buy the truck and used a Home Depot credit card to build out his porch to the street. "My American dream is starting to take shape," he said.

Neighbors complained, but the truck is legally in a commercial zone, so there wasn't much the city could do but require the owners of El Nutri Taco to upgrade some electrical hookups.

The truck is on Southeast Woodstock Boulevard near 84th Avenue, just a few blocks east of Reed College—a natural clientele, I'd think. [via Cyrus Farivar]

this is a dream of mine.

good for them.

why the hell would the neighbors complain? "oh no, now there's a taco truck within walking distance of my house, what on earth shall I do about this travesty?" I would be doing a dance of joy!

@courtguerra: Why does any homeowner complain? Property value.

It's actually at 84th and Woodstock (and truly, it should improve the property value around there, it's nicely done)

Thanks, nwbywayofla. Just fixed that. Now it's a little too far for Reedies.

My first reaction to this article was, why would you name a taco truck after a giant aquatic rodent?

Then I realized I was thinking of a nutria. Phew.

Are they good? I want to know.

This place is really good. I had my wife pick up some food there on a lark a couple of months ago and it was really great.

That's pretty cool. I'll have to trek out there and see how they compare to my favorite taco truck on SE Division.

so convenient! i like how they set up a sitting area too!

Im gettin one of those when i make it big

I live two blocks from this taco truck, and I couldn't be happier. I don't care if it helps or hurts my property value--this is a crap neighborhood anyway--what I do care about is how damn good it is. My mouth waters just thinking about the tacos al pastor, grilled onions, cilantro, a little squeeze of lime, YUM. Out here, where you have to choose between the culinary delights of Claim Jumper or (god forbid) Macaroni Grill, El Nutri is a welcome addition.

I LOVE that story!!!
And @courtguerra~You made everyone in my house laugh really hard =)
