How to Make a Rainbow Cake

Aleta Meadowlark of The Omnomicon teaches you how to make a psychedelic rainbow cake. "The cool thing is that if you're making something so distractingly colourful, people will think it's delicious no matter what," says Aleta. I agree; those vibrant, artificial colors have reeled me in.

I have never heard of putting soda in cake... interesting. I think this cake is really cool to look at and would make the ultimate kids birthday party cake! Frosting it with plain white is a good idea as it already has so many layering colors. It would also add an element of surprise to cut into what looks like a rather plain cake to find the rainbow. One small downside to this recipe is that it dirties a fair amount of dishes, so make sure you have the time- good rainy day project!

I think I'm going to make this for a friend's birthday with a marshmallow fluff icing. ::drools::
Amazing pictures! And I love the writing voice.

ok, i guess if you like artificial everything this might be the cake for you...box cake mix, diet soda, artificial colors, instant pudding mix, and frozed whipped
"topping". i don't care how cool the cake looks, it's just gross!

What a visual! I'm going to make this sometime. Part of the fun was reading the comments on the Omnomicon site from horrified granolas who must not be used to anything that doesn't come in fungus/hemp colors.

I would not advise anyone to check their stool after eating this.

It's so purty, but it has Sandra Lee written all over it.

i agree with annaliesenc this just looks gross

Oh, how fun! I bet it turns your mouth awesome colors, too. I would be thrilled to get this as a birthday cake. Also, if I'm not feeling like a diet soda box cake (because honestly, sometimes I am), I could always make it with homemade cake batter, I bet. Love it!

that makes me want to puke!

I did this with cupcakes and it was AWESOME. (However, I tried to make mine actual real food and used the Cupcake Blog's aaaawesome vanilla cupcake recipe.)

For some reason it won't let me post a picture, even though it appears in the preview. See my photo at http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessandcolin/2874966626/.

this cake is a freakin miracle!

I mentioned this kind of cake in the red velvet cake thread. http://www.seriouseats.com/talk/2009/01/all-that-red-in-my-red-velvet-cakes-is-upsetting-me.html
I also quote from the blogger who baked one, "Instead I used a good old white cake recipe.
Split up the batter,Added obscene amounts of food coloring to each little bowl."
It has no appeal to me at all. I am sorry but trix is for kids.

@brianstewart: Thanks for the link! Those cakes are...very..popular. Damn.

Yeah MattBites posted a zebra cake on his blog like this that was just chocolate and vanilla. I'm totally doing this next time I make a yellow or white cake....

What's with rising popularity of rainbow cakes in blogs these days? The sight of rainbow cakes repulses me.

That said, if a slice were presented to me I might not turn it down. I fear that I'd like it.

I don't understand why some folks feel the need to look down at anything even remotely fun when it comes to food.

I think I'll make one of these this weekend. I want to try to make a Spira-Graph-style cake. I think I can put the cake pan off center on a Lazy Susan and spin it while I add the batter.
