Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage

When winter draws near, I start thinking about sausage. (Actually, I think about sausage year-round.) About the best, juiciest, meatiest, just-smoky-enough sausage I know is the sausage the Bracewell family makes and serves at their phenomenal Texas barbecue joint the Southside Market. The Bracewells are a generously spirited bunch, so they've given us ten pound packages of their incomparable sausage to give away as part of the Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway. Here in St. Louis it used to be Judd's Memphis Best. Then they closed, and it was Super Smoker. Then they closed (all but one store, that is, and it's too far away to be feasible). Now the go-to gotta-have-barbeque joint is Stumpy's.
I'm told that Pappy Smokehouse's is equally if not more delightful, but I've never been. Stumpy's is quite good, and makes me happy.

That's a loaded question with the many kinds of barbecue out there! Favorite Chicago ribs come from a shop that's long-since closed. Nothing has compared since. In NYC, R.U.B. does a decent job with their Carolina pulled pork and Texas BBQ, but doesn't hold a candle to the barbecue na baboy at Ihawan in Woodside.

Sadly, there are no decent barbecue joints in Philadelphia (that I've been able to find anyway). I've had some pretty good barbecue on my trips to Texas, but here in town I have to settle for my own barbecue!

Tucked away 30 miles south of Austin, TX is a tiny town called Lockhart, nicknamed "The BBQ Capital of the USA". Established in 1900, Kreuz Market started out as a meat market. It is now the best lip-smackin', finger-lickin', taste bud exploding BBQ joint around!!! My favorite barbecue joint is Smoque BBQ in Chicago, Illinois. Aside from beans that are a divine experience, they also have some of the best French fries in Chi-town. Hand-cut, double fried and lightly seasoned with black pepper and sea salt, they are crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside.

Bad To The Bone Bbq To Go, Ottsville, PA. and it is worth the drive from my home now in Bangor, PA but the best BBQ I ever had was at the now defunct Pig Stand in Binghamton, NY where I grew up, not only was it a fantastic bbq place but if you parked in the back parking slots you could do a little making out while you waited.

I'll tell you for sure--SSM has the best sausage in Texas, and it's well worth driving out of your way to get some, but you have to try the brisket at Salt Lick in Dripping Springs, Texas. If it's pulled pork you're looking for, you have to go the the annual barbecue in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, and make sure you get yours before noon, as they run out every time. Finally, every Fourth of July, there is an event in Fort Bragg, California where a friend of mine stuffs a whole pig with pineapple and garlic that when its done, melts in your mouth--but that one is by invite only; so you have to start kissin' Uncle Gene's ass a year in advance to secure your spot on the guest list...glwt...
