Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 50: Me and Oprah, the Marvin and Tammi of Diet Bloggers

"And when those duck fat fries at Hot Doug's call your name, Oprah, call or IM me instead. We can be our own mini diet support group."

Oprah Winfrey, whom I admire a great deal, recently fessed up on her show about her weight gain. She said that at that moment she weighed over 200 pounds. Now having gone on a very public diet this last year, I can relate to what she's going through. And I don't have to withstand the scrutiny of millions of adoring fans for an hour every day on national television.

So I have an idea. I don't want to sound presumptuous or anything, but I think Oprah and I should join forces in our public (yes, I know that her public is a helluva lot bigger than mine) quests to lose weight. Oprah and I can be blogging diet buddies. We can become the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell of diet bloggers.

Oprah can start blogging about her diet on her website (and as far as I can tell, she doesn't blog yet) or if she needs any tech support, we would help her here at Serious Eats. In addition to Ed Levine's Serious Diet each week, there could be Oprah Winfrey's Serious Diet. I know I find it incredibly helpful to blog about my weight trials and tribulations, and maybe Oprah will as well.

When I feel like reaching for a slice of flaky apple pie I will call Oprah. And when those duck fat fries at Hot Doug's call your name, Oprah, call or IM me instead. We can be our own mini diet support group.

The Weigh-In

I could have used my Oprah lifeline last night. At a party I was so tempted by the parade of fried shrimp, pigs in blankets, and sliders that came my way, I thought I was going to crack and start chugging those sliders. But I didn't, so I'm feeling pretty about this morning's weigh-in.

230. Down two more pounds this week, and I'm on the cusp of breaking the 230 pound barrier. I can't wait to see the "22" come up on Thinner's LED screen. I'm telling you, Oprah, this diet blogging works. As Marvin and Tammi sang, "It's all we need to get by."

I think this is a bang up idea.

I was at a party eating fried shrimp, pigs in blankets, and sliders. Maybe we were at the same party. Could happen?

Ed, don't kid yourself or Oprah. Only a person with superhuman strength could pass up those Hot Doug's duck fat fries, support group or no.

Ain't No Mountain High, Ain't No Valley Low.....

Hey - you're a success story. I see no reason why Oprah wouldn't want to join forces with you! You should have your people call her people. :D

Congratulations on the continuing weight loss, Ed!

hey, nice going ed! i'm relatively new to the serious eats family and i've been reading your weight loss stories. congrats on making it through the holidays and lots of cold weather, when it's oh so easy to put on the pounds. keep it up and congrats!

Ed looks like a very serious eater in that picture.

If I had a team of people to make me look as good as Oprah does, extra weight or not, I wouldn't worry about dieting.

Ed doesn't look half bad, either, come to think of it.

Congrats, Ed. Keep on keepin' off.

Ed - your weight loss postings have become one of my favorite posts on Serious Eats. Especially seeing how going on vacation impacts your weight loss. Keep it up!
