How to Eat a Store-Bought Tuna Eyeball

20090107-fisheyeball.jpg

There's not much how-to advice, even online, for eating tuna eyeballs. Luckily Jesse of the site Flee Alaska seemed to figure it out. For only one hundred yen—that's less than a buck—the daredevil eater couldn't pass up this deal. Without any seasonings, the gelatinous ball went into a pot of boiling water. Conclusion: "not too bad." One part tasted like a hard-boiled egg. [via Neatorama]

i really think we should be discouraging tuna consumption.

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

overfishing! has decimated the global population of bluefin tuna, and others (yellowfin, bigeye etc.) are catching up quickly. the loss of top predators is one of the most serious risks to the health of the ocean and the global fishing industry.

First deep fried spooge (link), now this! SE is definitely the food blog of the year... vote now (link)! Especially since some fan of Cake Wrecks has figured out how to hack the Weblog Award voting mechanism, increasing the number of votes they've gotten by 10,000 in one day... SE fans have to take action! (Note to SE: put a link in every post to the voting booth.)

By the way, "eyeball boy" has a blog posting on shirako dating back a few years (http://www.fleealaska.com/index.php?items=29), maybe he could be the Alaskan SE correspondent...

Interesting post on something I'd never do.

I hate the "I think" followed by the "we" meme that pollutes modern thought. Would prefer a smarter argument that doesn't poke a finger in your chest the fourth word in. It's a real turnoff to bothering to listen further to someone's argument, no matter how earnest or sensible that argument may be.

Nothing on you, coolname. It's just that I see it all the time and it must be a modern thing among younger people who heard it in school from teachers/activists.

As to the argument about overfishing, I agree. I'm no tree-hugger but I cringe at treatment of the oceans and of ocean life. That, not hugging trees (how's that 30-year hijacking of thoughtful forest management and clearning underbrush treating you these days, California?), is going to have the major impact on world food supplies and available water (yes, ocean water is undrinkable, but the ocean has THE major impact on water availability on land).

/whoops, soapbox. Sorry.

Would you have preferred it phrased this way?

"Tuna consumption should be discouraged."

I think you should lighten up.

boy, having a chip on your shoulder and thinking "we" equals a poke in the chest must be an old thing among grouchy old farts who heard it in the caves from the dinosaurs

"i think" and "we" seem preferable to YOU SHOULD.

either way, i think we should all lighten up and stop eating tuna, cutting down the rainforest and watering the lawn for hours.
*poke*

but i do think so. it is my opinion. it is righ, but in this circumstance it is still my opinion. aren't we here to share opinioins. this is editorial. if i were writing a piece for a publication as a reporter i would not say i think. but, i feel like the comments sections on web-sites like this are instant op-ed pages. whatever.

Oh no he needed to cook it in soy sauce + tons of ginger + sake + mirin.
It's extremely fishy but that's because it's full of DHA. I prefer cheek meat.

While I agree that bluefins are being overfished, non-Asians would say eww and throw away the head anyways. At least every part of the tuna is enjoyed there.

I pride myself on being an adventurous eater. "How do you know that you don't like it if you don't try it" is my motto. But it seems I’ve found my "no way". I'm not even thinking about trying that.
