Chocolate Beer
The concept of chocolate beer isn't new, but Sapporo's latest product, Chocolate Brewery, sounds darn tasty. It's made with Royce chocolates, a Japanese confectioner that looks good, but I can't read a thing on the website. Fortunately, I can read what's posted on japansugoi.com, which says the beer is only available from Sapporo until the 23rd of January. Boo on them.
Luckily, there are lovely alternatives to Chocolate Brewery like Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout, which tastes like liquefied 70 percent cacao, carbonated into a heavenly treat. Another good brew is Sam Adams' Chocolate Bock, one of their extreme beers made with Scharffen Berger chocolate and has a rich body and smooth taste. Any other chocolate beers to note?

Chocolate Indulgence from Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY. Everything they make is wonderful.

Anyone know where I can actually find this Sapporo Chocolate beer? What a tease to just say that it exists but make no mention of where to find it!

@DanielJ -- You can only get the beer from the Sapporo Brewery, in Japan.

There's a European beer that has a chocolate after-taste... Hobgoblin I believe was the name. Dee-licious.

2 that should be available nationwide-
Young's Double Chocolate Stout. Fairly light for a stout, kind of chalky, nice balance of sweetness. ~$5 for a 24oz.

Southern Tier Choklat Stout. Very chocolatey, heavy and delicious. It'll fill you up. ~$8 for a 24oz.

I haven't had that but generally Sapporo makes a really poor beer. Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout is quite good. Young's Double Chocolate Stout and Stone's Bitter Chocolate Oatmeal Stout are also quite good.

Rogue Ale's Chocolate Stout is a winner for me. It still tastes like a beer-beer and not an alcoholic chocolate shake.
They also make a Mocha Porter if you like a more full-bodied taste.

I like the Rogue Ale's offerings too.

Brooklyn Brewery's Black Chocolate Stout is one of my favorite beers and the only "Chocolate" beer I can drink. The difference is that they don't add any actual chocolate, they are just using "Black" and "Chocolate" malts.

southern tier choklat (imp. stout) is amazing. by far the most chocolate-tasting beers i've tried:

Rogue Chocolate Stout is definitely my favorite. P-Town represents!

Brooklyn Chocolate Stout is great and must have a following in NYC; a friend who lives in Queens couldn't find it and I had to get it for him... in Danbury, CT!

My favorite chocolate stout is my homemade. I started making beer a few years ago. After tasting the chocolate stout of one of my fellow Central PA brewclub members, I begged for his recipe for three months...finally got it. It's a challenging recipe...mainly because it gets better and better with age...and while it tastes delicious after just 2 months, it tastes fabulous after a year. I've compared it to many of the micro-brewery chocolate stouts up and down the east coast and I still like mine better. BTW I am the only woman brewer in our club. Most of the homebrewers I meet anywhere are men. My husband does the taste quality control and helps me bottle it. I have also used it in chocolate cherry bread...now there's a wonderful bread!
On an economic note...the government is getting ready to raise the "luxury tax" on beer and wine...get in line at your local brew supply store to offset that cost.

Royce Chocolate is ah-mazing! Outside of Japan, there's also a boutique in Singapore's Takashimaya dept. store.

I see Young's has already been mentioned, but I'll also mention my personal favorite. There is a local brewpub in the DC/Baltimore area (DuClaw) that makes a chocolate-raspberry stout as their February seasonal offering (They do a different one every month in addition to their regular stable of 5) - it's called Naked Fish, and although it's only available at DuClaw, if you happen to be in the area, it's totally worth it. I look forward to it every year.

I have been a fan of the sam adam's and brooklyn chocolate beers for a while, and I got a few bottles of the Stone dark chocolate oatmeal stout for christmas and I am hooked.
jboylan at 7:29PM on 01/17/09
I have used the Young's to make chocolate cake, the flavor of the cake is outstanding, very dark and complex, a very grown-up chocolate cake.
Chaos at 4:20PM on 01/18/09
So... it's a fermented alcoholic chocolate beverage?
michaelleung at 7:28PM on 01/18/09
In answer to Michaelleung--yes, it is fermented alcoholic beer. Many of the chocolate stouts commercially made are in 7-10% alcohol range. My homemade is 13%.
Ezzie at 8:49AM on 01/19/09
i just bought a Youngs for the 2nd time the other day... and i realized when i started drinking it that i was really just thirsty for chocolate milk.
but Young's over ice cream or in a cake, as suggested above, sounds truly awesome.
@Chaos-- when making the cake, do you just sub some or all of the water for the beer?
redzerostar at 7:11PM on 01/19/09
I LOVE Young's Double Chocolate Stout. I never thought I'd care for chocolate beer, but man, that stuff is goooooooood.
