Photo of the Day: A True Ice Cream Sandwich

Photograph from manda_wong on Flickr
Sometimes ice cream sandwiches stretch the truth a bit. Where's the white bread and mustard? OK, forget the mustard. But at least one Singaporean street vendor is taking the "sandwich" definition more seriously with this taro ice cream squished between multicolored bread. With crusts! Justice prevails.

Ice cream plus actual bread is surprisingly good. I remember seeing it around Thailand occasionally, too - maybe it's a regional thing?

Yeah you can get those at the convenience stores all over South Korea too... haven't had the urge to try them though.

*Ahh! Correction... you can get them in Korea with whipped cream mostly. I haven't seen the ice cream ones.

What's with the pink and green bread? Creepy! When I first looked at it I thought it was moldy.

These are quite common in Singapore. Most street vendors selling ice cream offer either bread or a wafer with a slab of ice cream. I don't think I've seen an ice cream cone from a street vendor.
As for the colours... they were odd to me at first as well but what they are is colour. It make it look sweet even if it isn't.
The key though, is that it actually tastes great. The bread just merges nicely with the sweetness of the ice cream.
It should also be noted that besides the traditional chocolate, strawberry and vanilla flavours there is also durian, taro, corn and red bean.

This sandwich is my hero.
(no pun intended...)

Yeah, haven't they been selling those in the Philippines for years?
And didn't I see Andrew Zimmern eat one on Bizarre Foods? SEers, does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I saw this on here before. I think the nice soft colored bread reminds me of something they make at the Shop Rite. Cute.
I have a thing about taro. One bad scratchy throat experience and now I just don't eat it.

my dad grew up in the philippines and one of his favorite treats is ice cream on a bun. and i saw ice cream and bread sandwiches at an ice cream place in spain a few years back, too!

@missvenuz & HappyJack - I know what you guys are talking about. I saw that episode too, and I was surprised that he didn't like it after all the other questionable foods he's eaten.

These are all over Singapore. You can either get them on a wafer type thing, or you can get the bread. I prefer the bread because Singapore is hot, and as the ice begins to melt, it oozes into the bread. It's really nice. I like the red bean flavor best, though my boyfriend claims to love the durian, which in my opinion tastes like a gas leak smells.
The Sicilians do something similar. They scoop gelato into brioche buns, and let me tell you, it's fantastic. Hazelnut gelato on brioche? Yes.
