No Acorns in US This Year?

20081201-acorns.jpgFrom the Washington Post: "'Once I started paying attention, I couldn't find any acorns anywhere. Not from white oaks, red oaks or black oaks, and this was supposed to be their big year,' said Greg Zell, a naturalist at Long Branch Nature Center in Arlington. 'We're talking zero. Not a single acorn. It's really bizarre.'"

I have your acorns, sir! The squirrels are looking quite fat and well fed off them. There is a thick carpet of them for me to walk on each way to school everyday.

@feriorenna, thank god! I was starting to worry that this was the next bee shortage. :(

Plenty were to be found here in western NY...

I have two million here at my house - seriously, we have never had such an attack of the acorn like this before. We even had the trees cut back and still they are everywhere.

Come to think of it, there are none at my house.. We would usually be drowning in them by now.

Sandra Lee put them all on her Kwaanza cake. Oh, wait--those are egg-corns, which look strangely like corn nuts.

we had a lot of them this year in our yard here in vermont.

Here in Bronxville, New York, I heard them making those 'ping' sounds as they bombed my car while parked...I also felt them when a few bounced off my head...And yes, the squirrels were having a field day...What are we talking about here, the domesticated kind?

There are a TON in Greenville, SC. Those missing acorns please come down here and take as many as you can carry. Thanks in advance

This guys is clearly not looking hard enough. He should see east village squirrels- they are scaring off the rats with their enormous, menacing shadows.

It looks to be just in the DC area.

I have more acorns than, well, than even the resident squirrels, chipmunks and rabbits can eat. This guy must be crazy.

Trillions of acorns here in N. Florida. They outnumber rednecks 1,000,000 to 1.

Maybe there are no acorns because the folks at Alinea keep cutting down the branches to make their crazy 'burnt oak leaves' with fried gelled items hors d’oeuvres.

I have my share, and possibly yours too.

Atlanta has enough for a chipmunk feast. Every time the wind blows, our roof gets pelted. They fall into our drinks when we're on the deck.

It's great to hear that acorns are indeed falling this year. I'm glad this is not another bee mystery. Nutcrackers, anyone?

No acorn missiles this year at our place or in other yards that we walk by within a 1/2 mile radius from the house.

Do nuts run in cycles? We're renting, on the East Coast. I know NOTHING about the trees here...but I DO know that when we looked at our place in March, the ground was COVERED with nut shells. Now, it's fall...and there is a nut to be seen, on the trees OR on the ground.

We are swimming in them here in Round Rock, Texas (just north of Austin).

I live in Central Jersey and most years by early November my property is blanketed with with acorns. I didn't think about it until I saw this post, but this year there are none.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

Southern California has acorns for sure. The squirrels are starting to freak me out.

There's plenty down here in South West Florida...In fact it seems like an overabundance

Here in Central NY we had tons of chesnuts. So many that we had a hard time getting the grass to grow because of our chesnut "carpets." Our driveway was a mess.

There are reportedly no acorns in New England, Virginia, Washington DC, New York, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Oregon, parts of Canada including Nova Scotia, and Germany. I can only speak for my city and that is Cleveland, Ohio. There are NO acorns in Cleveland for the first time in my life. Very credible sources (like scientists) report in an article that there are no acorns to be found in an area, and then someone in a comment section will say they have loads of acorns in their yard in the same area.
I'm going with my own observations. There are no acorns in Cleveland, Ohio.
