McDonald's Filet-O-Fish: Yea or Nay?

20081210-filetofish-sandwich.jpg

Yesterday I was sent on an AHT mission to try all the cheeseburgers at McDonald's, a task I was not particularly excited for since I don't like McDonald's burgers. But there is one thing I do like at McDonald's: the Filet-O-Fish sandwich. While I used to eat them regularly as a kid, up until yesterday I probably hadn't eaten one in nearly ten years.

"What's in a Filet-O-Fish?" asked my co-worker Raphael.

"You've never had one? It's a sandwich with a fried fish patty, cheese, and tartar sauce."

"Cheese? There's cheese in it?" Raphael's face screwed up in disgust after I rattled off the sandwich's main components.

He was not loving it. His lack of love was so intense that he felt the need to write this "con" stance:

Something about the Filet-O-Fish creeps me out. In my opinion, McDonald's meats are beef and chicken—Big Macs and McNuggets. Fish just doesn't fit into the equation. The sandwich is basically a deep-fried flat and wide fish stick, and some tartar sauce on a bun. But wait. There's a slice of CHEESE? For real? Horrifying.

He didn't taste the sandwich, but tasting it wouldn't have changed his mind; he hated the Filet-O-Fish with every fiber of his body.

20081210-filetofish-box-small.jpgI, on the other hand, still like it. It's actually better than it was a decade ago because now it comes in a more crush-proof box instead of just being wrapped in paper, thus protecting the fluffy bun from being flattened and squishing out all the sauce. Admittedly, my affinity for this combination of fried, breaded fish, processed orange cheese, and gloppy, tangy, pickle-studded mayonnaise on a soft, squishy bun has a lot to do with nostalgia. Like when I lived in Taiwan in 1997 and was so accustomed to eating large American portions that I'd buy a Filet-O-Fish in addition to a McChicken Extra Value Meal (to clarify, portion sizes in Taiwan were smaller than those in the U.S.—but I also assume that my metabolism was really good back then).

While these days I may not go to McDonald's just to get a Filet-O-Fish, I don't know where else I could easily fulfill the craving for fish, cheese, tartar sauce, and bread in every bite. (The craving hits. Sometimes.) If other burger joints made a similar sandwich, I'd probably eat their versions.

Is anyone else a Filet-O-Fish lover/hater?

It's too bad that the fish patty has gotten much smaller and the cheese is only 1/2 of a slice but..... I am so lovin the fish sammie at Mc D's.
When it's blazing hot & fresh with loads of tartar sauce,it's so so so awesome :-)

I really have to agree with Raphael. There's something about the thought of McDonald's serving fish that has always, always, always creeped me out.

Delish! They put slightly too much sauce on for my liking, but that's easily fixed.

Yay! These were my mom's favorite at McDonald's, hence we ate many as children. Yeah, I agree, sometimes too much sauce, but we would just wipe off the excess :D

Fillet O Fish is the best of all McDonald's burgers (not including McMuffins)!

GROSS! It's bad enough to eat at McDonald's, but to eat fish there?!?! The thought makes me wrinkle my nose and pucker my lips in disgust, probably not too far off from what R was doing!

Oh gods! This post has reminded me of the disgustingly hot-melty mayonnaise flecked with something that may or may not be pickles, the meld-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth cheese-like substance, and grease-smeared fish patty thing. *shudders*

Count me out.

Anybody remember the McRib sandwich? How do we feel about that?

i love the idea of eating a good fish sandwich -- but the actual eating one at mc donalds is another thing all together. whenever i've eaten their fish sandwich, a find an intense need to brush my teeth and shower about 30 minutes later....

make your own at home and you'll see how much better it tastes.....use scrod or cod - homemade tartar sauce with helman's mayo and chopped and drained pickles and throw in some capers.... and it's okay to have a regular hamburger bun, if you want.... you'll really taste the difference....
try it -- you'll like it!!!!

Yay!

I always get Filet-o-Fish when I go to Mcdonalds, that or junior chicken.

Fish sandwich at McSorley's on Fridays is much better.

I've never seen a square fish.

I love 'em! They're one of my guilty pleasures.

Ohhhh, I used to LOVE Filet-O-Fish sandwiches. I'm totally with you. I haven't had one in a long time, but I bet I'd still love it. Yeah, they're a little weird, but they don't creep me out nearly as much as McDonald's beef does these days.

The Filet-O-Fish reminds me of my dad. Whenever he took us to McDonald's, that is what he'd always order. Always. For that I think the Filet-O-Fish is awesome.

The fact that it is a cheesefish sandwich has always bothered me. I've always found dairy + seafood an odd combination.

If you opt for fast food fish, Burger King is king (no pun intended). Get it with tartar, raw onion and cheese. Beats the pants off of Mickey D's but it's bigger and costs more. Then again, it depends upon who owns the franchise. I went to Arby's last night with a big coupon promotion and they were out of Horsey Sauce and BBQ sauce. WTF? It's a crap shoot any time you hit fast food places. Buyer beware.

I love them but on a calorie per dollar basis they aren't a good value.

Nothing wrong with cheese and seafood.

Try melting some swiss cheese over some sea scallops, you'll be amazed how well they go together.

These aren't horrible. They're not good, but they're not horrible. Apparently, they're a detainee favorite in the Guantanamo Bay detention center, which might say something (but what?). I'm kind of indifferent to them.

Cheese being the operative phrase here. That slice on that sandwich is NOT cheese... :P

Oh My Gosh! I can't tell you how much I loved them as a kid. LOVED!!! I haven't had one in, like, a hundred years, but you know what? I can still taste it. And it still tastes awesome. And this remembrance has entirely decided what I'm having for lunch tomorrow.

Definite Yay on my part. I like to put the fries from the meal in the sandwich as well.

Nay. Actually, nay to anything at McDOnalds, but especially the smelly generic fishwich with plastic cheese.

tina_eats - Would you turn up your nose at a nice lobster Newburg? That's seafood and heavy cream - dairy!

When I came out of surgery a couple of years ago, I am told that, as I was waking up in Recovery, I asked one of the nurses to get me a fish sandwich at McDonald's. I have no recollection of doing that, but when I was told about it, I got a serious craving, and when one was finally brought to me, I ate it in two bites. Two BIG bites.

They are wonderful. Utterly horrible nutritionally, but what a joy!

Loved them as a kid, forgot about them until now. Definitely would try it again.

I haven't had one in years, but it was always my favorite sandwich at McDonald's.

having never tried a fillet of fish sandwich, i think the sandwich sounds mostly great save for one thing, ready for it (raphael), THE CHEESE! I'm all down with squishy bun, deep fried fish and tartar sauce. In fact, there are very few things in this world i am more down with than that.... but.... CHEESE?? fish and cheese is, in my opinion, a truly vile combination, though having never tried the sandwich in question and given that mcdonalds foodstuffs rarely interact with each other as they would in the real world-- i will withhold judgement. though please, mcdonalds employee taking my order--hold the cheese.

Definitely in the love camp here. The only thing I'll eat at McDonald's actually.

As long as it's freshly made, yea.

Probably my favorite McD's offering. When they are hot, fresh, and properly sauced, and good lord if the fries are crispy--that makes one fine meal! Being chronically ill, I am nauseous every single day, and find the filet has been one of few fast foods that can soothe my nausea pretty well. Not sure why that is, but I'm a fan.

Sure making your own tastes better, also takes a trip to the grocery store, paying probably as much for the fish as the whole meal these days, the breading, the frying, and the making of the tarter sauce.

For fries and a coke-on-tap, I'll gladly drive the 5 minutes and fill my cravings when they hit. Oddly enough, it's other fast food fish sandwiches that I can't seem to wrap my head around and try.

i wouldn't eat it but if i did i'd like it.
and, for the record, i'm generally opposed to cheese with fish.

Fish sandwich, not so much.

McRib...the bomb!!

Womandingo - call me a ding dong but I've never heard of lobster Newburg! Care to enlighten me about this delight?

I guess my aversion to the dairy/seafood combination comes from my Asian roots from when I was growing up, we never ate anything of that combination. Being much more open more now about food, I probably wouldn't object to trying it but it wouldn't be my first choice.

They're awful but I love them. Total comfort food.

And for the person that asked earlier, I also enjoyed the McRib.

McRib is currently running around St. Louis, and it's ... okay, I guess. But the FOF pales in comparison to the now-departed fish sandwich at Jack In The Box, which had a bigger piece of fish with a lighter layer of breading and wasn't overcooked.

I have never had one of these. McDonalds is not the place I go to for quick food.

@nhh2727: and?

Definitely childhood comfort food for me! It was the only sandwich I'd eat at McDonald's growing up (and still is, actually). When I'm out of the country and homesick, nothing tastes better than fish and fries at the McDos.

I've always loved them. I'll still pick one up once or twice a year when I'm in the mood.

Does anyone remember the Deluxe version? Back in the era of the Arch Deluxe, when they tried to upscale-ify some of the sandwiches? I think the chicken ones are the only ones that have held on to any of those ideas.

Filet-o-fish is definitely a "nostalgic" food for me too. I think it's a Chinese thing, because we always thought that the burger meat was too tough (?) I never had an actual burger until junior high, and to this day I don't think I've ever tried a Big Mac. Right now McDonald's in Hong Kong is promoting its ebi (shrimp) burger, which looks like a shrimp pattie with a few actual shrimp so that you can "actually see" what you're eating. I haven't tried it yet, but my parents gives me this weird look every time the commercial comes on... I don't know why?

I had a friend growing up who was kosher--the kind of kosher where the only McDonald's item his family allowed him to eat was...the Filet-O-fish.

About 11 years ago, McD's was running a promotion for Big Mac's, two for $2 on Tuesdays. Every week my father would go on Tuesday thinking he was going to order a cheap big mac for lunch. When he'd get there, he'd look at the menu, change his mind and order a filet-o-fish instead. Until one day he decided to actually order the Big Mac. Three days later he had a massive heart attack. Given the choice, I'll always take the filet-o-fish.

I ask for the tartar sauce on my 1$ chicken sandwich. Try it!

I'm definitely a Filet o'Fish lover here. I probably wouldn't like cheese on fish normally, but the McDonald's concoction does me just fine. I LOVE the squishy texture of it. I could easily eat two for a meal.

I'm reading the Filet O'Fish comments with my mom, the lover of the sandwich, who agrees that it is the best thing at McDonald's (minus the sauce, of course!).

I just love mcnuggets...I don't think I can do cheese and fish, even if the bun is fluffy.

Last time I had a Filet-O-Fish was many years ago, but I'm a fan. Or at least I was a fan then. I'm sure they will skip the cheese if you ask them to, but I have no problems with it. Kind of wish they were bigger though.

Oh yeah, with extra cheese. haha

The last time I ate--ten years ago--at McD's I was sick in the parking lot.

FOF fan here. I agree that it seems weird for these burger restaurants to serve fish - but there has to be something for the Catholics to order on Friday!

well, i'm on a lifelong boycott of mcdonald's altogether, so i can't say as i'd even consider considering whether or not the filet is good OR bad.

My mom used to eat that when she took me to McDonald's as a kid because she felt the FOF was a healthier option than say, a Big Mac. I don't think there were that many chicken sandwiches available then. But yeah, I distinctly remember growing up and starting to eat them with her too, you know, to show her that her little girl could be a grown up and eat Filet-O-Fishes too. =D

I've always enjoyed the FoF @ Mickey D, though I'm not a big fan of the amount of tartar sauce they use. (And I'd rather have cocktail sauce anyway.) My big "beef" [pun intended] w/ the FoF is the fact that they've got hamburgers for $1, but a FoF costs 2 or 3 times as much!

In the name of truth, I also must admit that we only go to Mickey D or Burger King when my wife craves a Quarter-Pounder or a a Whopper. Given the choice, I'd much rather have the FoF (or its BK cousin). And the fries.

people have strong feelings about combining and cheese. or even 'seafood' and 'cheese'.

Love the squishy texture, pile on the tartar sauce and DO NOT FORGET the cheese! Loved it as a child, now a rare, guilty pleasure food!

Actually love them... and, as Vincci said earlier, here in Hong Kong they are currently also selling ebi burgers - made from shrimps. I've tried one - pretty tasty, like fried shrimp, actually. HK McD's is currently going a bit fish crazy, actually. They have always sold fish sandwiches here for breakfast (a big seller), but recently they have introduced a special big fish breakfast, with scrambled eggs, english muffin and several fish fingers!! You won't be seeing that in the US!

"Total fat 18 g (28%)
Saturated fat 4 g (20%)
Trans fat 1 g
Cholesterol 40 mg (13%)
Sodium 640 mg (26%)"

@nhh2727, gee that's just too bad ... cuz most times I'll have two! ;-)

@roboppy, the thing that's annoying about fast food sammiches that come in boxes is that you need the wax paper wrapper to contain the drippings whilst driving. For that reason, I keep a box of 12x12 wrappers in the car.

Oh yeah, but it has to be dipped in copious amounts of catsup!! (all while hiding in embarassment in the Mickey D's parking lot at 4 am)

NEA! While I LOVE fish in its many incantations, this just ain't one of them! Fish is not square or rectangular (ex: fish sticks)

Guess I don't like my fish pre-processed, breaded and frozen before cooking.

Now let me go to a little shack in MA or ME and you will see me all over a fresh fish sandwich there! Nice piece of haddock or cod, lightly breaded, quickly fried, served with tartar sauce, lemon or malt vinegar if you prefer. That is heaven!

Never again. I remember having to eat them for Lent while the other kids in the field trip got whatever they wanted. Moreover, they tasted pretty gross and the tartar sauce sometimes oozed out the back.

I say yea! It's the best of their sandwiches! And I like lots of tartar sauce!

Let me get this straight: we're talking fast food, and some people want you to drive to Maine for a sandwich....? Hellooo!

I the Filet-o-Fish. I like that it's always had half a slice of cheese (not like it's some real, intense cheese anyway) or that if you get too much sauce, you just reverse the top and bottom buns. And the bun is always super soft... lekker! But honestly - it's more of a genuine piece of food than the ground-up burger patties. Sure, it's square, but we're talking fast food here, kids! Get a grip!

Filet-o-Fish sandwiches always make me think of Towing Jehovah by Joseph Morrow. It's basically a book about a crew of people who are given the task of towing God's corpse to its eventual hiding place, and what happens to people when the thing that they center their moral compass on no longer exists. At any rate, the cook for the crew is an gastronomic magician of sorts who can recreate any fast food dish. When the crew runs out of food, they start feasting on God's body...and aforementioned cook makes God's nipple into Filet-o-Fish sandwiches.

As a younger person I found the idea of the fish and cheese a little odd on a FoF. Trips to McD's were rare, so I never tried one being quite enamoured of the Quarter Pounder with Cheese. But my former SIL didn't want her young child eating ground beef (freaky about ecoli risks) so all she ever let him have at McDs when we went was the fish. So I tried one and actually I like them. I very rarely eat fast food (even less so since the economy started tanking) but yeah, I'd eat one - or maybe even two depending on the time of the month (grin).....

I'm with you--haven't had one in a long time, but I love 'em, cheese and all. McD's is no place for culinary snootiness.

www.EatCheapEatWellEatUp.com

Not so hip on McDonald's but I do like FOF - always have.

For those who care, McDonald's fish is actually sourced from Marine Stewardship Council certified sustainable fisheries. I believe I read that on Serious Eats a while back.

"I've never seen a square fish."

The logical response, of course, is that I've never seen a circular cow.

I love the Filet O Fish. It's the only thing on the McDonald's menu I eat. (Asides from the breakfast when I'm up in time... guilty pleasure) I really don't understand why McDonald's fish freaks people out. I don't understand why it's any more troublesome than cow or chicken. Or hello, the McRib. It's delicious people! It's crispy and saucy and melty! And it tastes more like actual food to me than the burgers. But maybe that's just me. Maybe it's an Asian thing. I know growing up, all the Asian parents I knew preferred the Filet O Fish and I always thought it was the "grown up" sandwich. Whatever.

Definitely YEA!

As a previous poster said, I like them, it's the only thing I'll order if forced to eat at a McDonald's.

My mom once asked the counter employee what kind of fish was in the Filet o'Fish sandwich.

"Square."

She got a regular hamburger instead.

They're 2 for $3.00 here at many Mc D's in CT. What a guilty pleasure! No fries, no shakes, just give me the Filet-o-fish, please.

Every now and then I get a Big Mac Attack...and sometimes I sneak a Filet O' Fish. I admit it. They are not gourmet, nor are they supposed to be. But for what they are -- FAST FOOD -- they are a guilty pleasure, and every now and then, ya just gotta.

Filet O Fish are my second favorite McDonald's sandwich. I get extra tartar sauce so it squishes out onto the fries-I really like tartar sauce on french fries. I think it's the steamed bun that makes them better than the other fast food places and they only use half a slice of cheese so it's a little lower in fat....right????

Another YAY from me. That being said, I have not had McD's in about 12 years (since I was a senior in high school). When I did go to McD's that's the sandwich I would get. I started ordering it when I was little cuz my mom did-if she wasn't eating their salad. I'd also like to mention that going to McD's was a rare treat to me. My mom did not believe that I should grow up eating fast food.

Guess it rubbed off because fast food to me now is a sandwich or salad ordered from Wawa. :)

Love!
It is what it is...something completely different than a fresh fish sanwich on the coast, or a lovely beer battered fish and chips at a pub. All are good in their own way, and for different reasons.

I also associated it with "grown up" food, and ordered it just like my mom, without tartar sauce.

Never was a fan of the BK version. In fact, never a fan of BK, period.

And I remember that Arch Deluxe version as well. Too much bun on that one, I think. Original FoF squishy bun is one of life's tiny little pleasures.

@bobcat: Don't know if you will see this, but I am sorry to hear/read about your chronic illness. I hope your days are filled with love and you are surrounded by family that cares about you. (((HUGS)))

Still delish after all these years. Besides, they sure come in hand during the hard times like Lent. God bless ya, McDonald's for saving my soul on Fridays during the hard season.

I actually like the filet-o-fish quite a bit. They actually had/have a double version (2 fish patties) which I like better because that way you get a better fish to bread ratio.

These are a definite love/hate concept. I fall into the love category--the weird thing is that people who love them actually crave them. I have a theory that the people who like them are (a) Catholic or (b) Asian, because these are the two gorups of people who order them. (Asians, under a misguided notion that they're more health? At least that's what my mom said.)

@NYm-Catholic, here. I was never good at attending church regularly, but the fried fish portion of catholicism has stuck :)

i absolutely love it when ppl hate on a food that other people love. and the best part is they're drinking the haterade without even tasting it.

wow. love. it.

While I respect the Filet-O-Fish love, I would have to say that the Big Mac in all its gluttonous glory is my guilty pleasure. A while back they ran a 2 for $3 special...lets just say it was an AWESOME week, but the week after, not so much...

First - the Filet O Fish, to my knowledge (which may be inaccurate, admittedly) was introduced a long time ago in order to provide Christians/Catholics observing no-meat-Fridays during Lent an item to order from McDonald's when they HAD to have McDonald's but it was Friday. During Lent. Yeah, I thought it was weird, too, but it's kind of a smart marketing scheme considering the demographics of their target audience.
Second - Clearly, Raphael did not attend a NYC public school. Our choices included a similar sandwich - a fried fish patty (tartar sauce optional, you add it yourself) *with a slice of cheese fried into it*. I don't know what company makes them, but the slice of cheese was UNDER the fried "skin" exterior, and for someone who didn't like cheese slices on her sandwiches at the time, I would have to pick off half the breading to get to the cheese to remove it, which would come out easily since somehow, during frying, the cheese didn't melt.

Holla if anyone remembers those sandwiches...

PS I loved Filet'o'fish as a kid too, I think my parents thought it was actually healthy or something, so they ordered it for me frequently. Until I discovered the wonder that was that sandwich they had that came in a hot compartment, and a cold one, and you had to put them together... which they had to stop making because go-green people came and forced McDonald's to stop using styrofoam containers, making the hot part no longer hot... ANYWAY...

What I love is people categorically hating the Filet-o-Fish because it comes from McDonald's. "Oh, I would NEVER eat anything from that MAC-DONALDS!!!" Thanks for letting us know. Your Certificate of Super-Specialness is in the mail.

My wife won't eat the Filet-o-Fish because she thinks combining dairy and seafood is weird. To which I respond, "OK, honey. Now how about a nice steaming bowl of CRAB BISQUE?"

The one thing that makes the Filet for me. The cheese! I latched onto this idea very early in life and since I usually ordered fish sandwiches everywhere I went, I always asked for a slice of cheese on it. I usually received a very perplexed look from waitstaff. The best version was made at a local Twin Cities restaurant named Nelson's. They had the best fried fish.
I don't think the McD fish sandwich is the same one I remember from when I was little but I still have a soft spot for it in my heart. Back in the early 70's I was hospitalized for a week with pneumonia. I was in fifth grade. The first meal I requested to have when I got home was a filet o fish, fries, and a fried apple pie. We picked it up on the way home from the hospital. Nothing has probably ever tasted better, at least in my memory.

@ tina_eats - I grew up in an Asian household too, but one of the dishes my dad would order was called "baked grouper with cheese" over rice. From CHINESE places... of course it was HK Cafe food (aka Chinese interpretations of classic "American"/western dishes... oh how I love thee!!!). And you know, I still order that sometimes, even though I can't tell you what kind of cheese it is (it comes in a creamy white sauce... I don't know?).

Fillet of WHAT??? Surely, you jest....

This was the special treat we got to eat on Good Friday every year, even though the idea of it being an indulgent treat kinda goes against the whole tenor of Good Friday.

I'd rather go to a grade school cafeteria and eat fish sticks and Wonder bread.

LOVE it!!! It is not as great as 25 years ago, true, but still really good.

Man, I could eat several of those in one sitting when I was younger, I think its the best tasting thing, besides the fries of course...I haven't had one in so long... I would have to be so hungry and away from home to buy one...

Sourness fishy chessy taste of soft bread yummm......

I LOVE the filet-o-fish! When I was a kid, my folks would order them and when they unwrapped those sky blue wrappers the smell would make me wretch and complain. But now I love them unapologetically. A pit-stop at the golden arches is my husband's and my road trip indulgence. In my fantasy world, I would happily order two or three of those piping hot babies.

I too kind of love it too but always forget it exists. I don't go to McDonald's too often nowadays but when I do it's kind of a nice treat...oh, I can get a Filet-O-Fish!

I think my parents definitely thought it was the "healthier" choice. And I still tell myself it is the rare times I eat it. I don't care if it's breaded, fried, doused in tartar sauce and cheese.... Fish makes you smart. Yep.

Anyone try the Wendy's fish sandwich last summer? It only had a limited run but it was really tasty. And it had no cheese for those who are disturbed by the seafood + cheese combo.

Hot and greasy lot's of tarter sauce...I admit sometimes I still sneak thru the drive thru for one.

Yummie! There have been a few times I've had it, and the fish was too salty...but those were few and far between.
Love them......I'm sure the fish @ McDonald's thing or the fish w/ cheese thing sounds creepy to some...but don't knock it till you tried it.

I remember those fish patties with the cheese built in. I loved them. I noticed that the school district catered to the Catholics on Fridays since it was the only day they served them. It was usually accompanied with macaroni and cheese. (More cheese!) and a roll. Then they started making a burger out of it. God bless the school district. (Houston, Texas btw.)

I always got the FOF not because my parents or grandma thought it was healthier but because it was cheaper.

Cheaper trumped healthier. Always.

I've always been a fan of the filet o fish. I didn't have my first McDonald's cheeseburger until I was 23 because I always had the fish, but with no tartar sauce. It's only been in the last couple of years that I have embraced the sauce. I agree that they put too much sauce on, but the extra is good on fries.

Definitely yea. Growing up, my mother and I would always order them while my father and sister stuck to the burgers. They have gotten smaller and less saucier, alas.

Definitely nooooo. Granted I have purchased only one in my life in 1992, but it was terrible. The bun and sauce were fine, but the fillet looked and tasted like plastic. I tossed it outside to the feral cats. They sniffed it and then backed away.

Count me in! The world is full of filet-o-fish burger lovers who haven't had a filit-o-fish burger in decades!

I don't know that I've ever had one at McD's, but my mother-in-law and husband insist on serving this kind of breaded-fried-frozen-reheated-artificially geometric stuff as "fish" at home.

Usually it's Gorton's fish tenders, two of which about make up a F-o-F patty. I put them on a hamburger bun (or in a pinch, 2 slices of bread) and add a Kraft Single.

I hate this fish so much that the cheese (albeit artificial cheese) is what makes it edible.

I'm a lover, don't understand all the hate!

i love the filet o fish. Ya, it might look like a big fish stick but if you look at the inside after you take your first bite into it, you'll see the still intact flakes of fish. So, if you think about it, it's just a battered filet of fish (as plainly explained in the name), cut in a rectangle.

Yea! The filet o fish and fries are the only things I like from Mickey D's.

Admittedly, this always was my favorite thing to get at McDonald's.
I haven't been to McDonald's for at least a year, though, and I have no particular desire to go back.

Now I want to go get one, never having had one before. I wasn't a fish eater when young and the smell of even something this processed would make me gag. I can appreciate it now.

Love 'em! If I'm really hungry I'll put a FOF inside a cheeseburger for a McSurfn'Turf

filet of high fructose corn syrup, you mean.

@pcullie: I'm sure there are many corn-based things in the sandwich...corn flour, corn starch, corn oil...so maybe it's just a FILET-O-CORN.

There was an awesome urban legend when I was a kid that the Filet--o-fish was made out of sewer sharks - baby sharks kids had brought back from vacations in Florida or the Caribbean or bought at the exotic pet emporium and then got tired of them and flushed them down the toilets. According to legend, as a result, the sewers were filled with a mutant race of extremely hardy, vicious sharks that crafty McDonald's fishermen were harvesting and turning into F-O-Fs.

Wendy's has a fish sandwich that is leaps and bounds better than Mc D's.

When my DH was stuck in Japan he made the mistake of eating four Filet-O- Fish during a pre dawn breakfast. He regretted it the entire 20 hour flight.

No lobster newburg for you, then? I'm just asking.

i feel really self-conscious and embarrassed when i order this burger. it's like i'm ordering something i know i shouldn't be ordering and shouldn't be on the menu in the first place, but it's on the menu just so people like me will order it, ultimately, being a joke for workers at mcdonald's.

I love the Filet-O-Fish. I usually get it "plus onion and lettuce".

I liked the McRib & I've ALWAYS been pro-Filet O'...
tho in recent years, it seems like the fish in the center has shrunk,
(while the exterior breading obviously is the same square inchage).
So now the batter just leaves me with a film-of-grease aftertaste,
and I've jilted Filet-O.
But back in the day, it rocked!
cheese+pickes+ tartar=genius at Hamburger U

I use to live one town over from a Mr Hot Dog and they had a fish sandy that was bigger, cheesier, saucier and greasier than McDonalds... It is the only place I can think of that rivals/beats out the filet o fish... I don't buy fish at any other fast food joints...

I despise McDonald's. I absolutely hate it, but there's one thing I could eat everyday from that menu. The Filet O' Fish is almighty. It's weird because NO ONE I KNOW wants to go near it. The McRib is also a good'un. I'll have to go get a couple of both when the McRib is around so I don't have to take multiple trips to that wretched place.

Agreeing with Bakerloo Line... this is the only thing I'll eat in McDonald's. Well okay, the fries. But only with the Filet O Fish.

I used to love the FOF. Now, however, it seems too salty and small to even bother. Still, though, there are times when I will stop by a McDonalds to buy a couple, for old time's sake, I suppose.

No matter what my husband and I order at McDonalds...it's always finished with...."oh...and a Fish Sandwich too"....can't go near the place without ordering one...Especially great at 2:30 in the morning..after 4 hours of screaming rock and roll songs...it's the only thing I can eat and still go home and sleep on!

The FoF is the ultimate PMT food, gooey, cheesy and delightfully bland in a good way. I think that I must enjoy it for nostalgia reasons as every british kid from the eighties was brought up on fish finger sandwiches.
I could eat four at a time if I didn't look like such a piggy :)

Living By The Book - A Food Blog 365 Day Challenge

Absolutely NAY! I remember a neighbor let her son and I order two each, we were about 4 years old, and we both got sicker than a dog! Not pretty! And why would she have let us do that?!....

OK, as a follow up to my earlier post; I had my first FOF yesterday. Didn't change my life, but I enjoyed it for the innocuous offering it is. The FOF doesn't taste all that much different than their usually disappointing, overcooked, dried out chicken offerings. But it is in fact moister than said chicken. Result: I'd buy it again, and will tell myself it's better for me than red meat. More expensive in comparison to a cheap cheeseburger though, that's the one drawback. Next stop, the Wendy's version.

@Robyn - FoF-Yay or Nay? That's just fish bait!
Look at all the comments!
I love me the FoF Sammich. And it's been a 1/2 slice of cheese for years. I always ask for extra cheese. Commenters have written they're afraid of the beef, let alone a "square fish"... has anyone actually *seen* a grill/griddle at McD's lately? Everything is cooked in those weird yellow plastic drawers now. What the heck are they? At least the FoF is still deep fried. Or IS it?

This is lochness, one of lochaven’s other personalities and I’m here to say that my high school years were spent eating filet-o-fish sandwiches….and still have one occasionally. Back then they used to be 65 cents, but not any more. Whenever I order one I always ask them to make me a fresh one and willing to wait for it. They always comply.

Now, I know that lochaven would never go public that he’s had them before, but I think he also likes them…. .

Btw, I saw this a few months ago….I always wondered how to pronounce it… now I know.

When I was a kid, this was all I would eat from McDonalds. That and small fries, which I never could completely understand as they were exactly the same length as the "large" fries!!
I grew up OK, so it can't be that bad.

@meg3j I really want to try these mcrib sandwich, when I get to a McDonalds.
As for a fillet o fish I have not had one in many many years, not since I was a little kid but i loved them and I bet I would love them now except that now I don't really eat much types of fish cause I have allergies to them. Otherwise I would love to have one again and yes with the cheese.

Many years ago when they first came out they were made of Haddock and they were very good. God only knows what's in them now. Forget the cheese. Many years ago the filet-o-fish sammy came with cole slaw and tartar sauce which was really very good. I haven't had one in decades...

When they're good they are very very good.

I LOVE THEM ! Second to the Big-Mac.My first job was at the McDonalds 4 blocks from my house (I could ride my bike to work safely at any hour) in the summer of 1967 and again in the summer of 1968, my highschool summer job. The filet-a fish sandwich for only $.25 was great back then when all food was cooked on site and all ingredents were very wholesome, NOT the McDonalds of today as everything comes flash frozen pre-cooked in a microwave-bag, simply put horrible. The original used a fresh-baked slightly-sweet (naturally) bun with a tartar sauce that actually was very good (recipe developed by a real chef not a marketing group) the fish patty was, as pointed out earlier, of predomaintly Haddock or True Cod (now almost extinct thanks to the cod war waged by Canada attempting to preserve the fishery vs the European countries about fishing rights on the Grand Banks) and yes a full slice of real American cheese that had flavor and it was delicious.
I was working at McDonalds when the Big-Mac was introduced and it was also delicious and only about .45 or .50 cents some rediculious price along with .15 cent burgers, .17 cent cheeseburgers, .12 cent fries and so on. Everything was so much better when it was all cooked on site, we even washed, peeled, cut and blanched the fries from whole potatos numerous times a day. I still get a Filet-a-fish and a Big-mac on occassion when I cant control myself while passing a McDonalds.

I grew up with this. I kept the kind of kosher where this was the only thing at McD's that we were allowed to eat. I have never had a Happy Meal. When I was very young, I used to call these Cheeseburgers because of that yummy slice of plasticky American Cheese. The more tartar sauce the better. I used to dip my fries in the sauce that oozed out. I haven't had one in years. Tempting...

once in a while I get a nostalgic craving for one, but then I think about the highly processed bits of white fish deep fried in heavy batter and slathered with cholesterol laden mayonnaise on a slightly stale bun, not to mention the processed cheese, and I remember why I don't eat filet o' fish anymore. But the pull of childhood is strong.... thinking Velveeta ...

I've always liked this sandwich...and that goes back about 40 years...today I order it slightly healthier w/o the cheese, request light sauce and ask them to add lettuce, tomato and pickle. It is a little confusing for most of the cashiers at first, but most of the time I receive what I requested...just wish the bun was whole grain or a bit healthier in other ways. I generally only eat at McD's when taking a car trip but it is something consistent to count on.

Actually I was watching a show the other day that highlighted McDonald's own fishing vessels in which the COD are prepared and flash frozen right on the ship... employing many workers who work 12 hour shifts until the cargo is full and then back to port to offload... already prepared and packaged Filet 'O Fish.

BTW after watching the show I went to a wholesale distributor that I have bought raw breaded cod "squares" from in the past... I paid $40.00 for
24 - 4oz portions... if my math serves me right, that is $1.60 per portion!!!
I think I'll just buy mine @ McD's

cheap and delicious - it's a classic. during the mad-cow scare, this was the only sandwich my gf allowed me to eat from the mcd's and i learned to love it. and believe me people, you should worry more about where they get their dairy and poultry than worry about the fish. lastly, i love the tartar sauce overload, once i take it out of the box, i smear half of it on my box and use it as dipping sauce for my golden delicious potato stix. =)

I love them!!!!!!!!!!!

They're tastey but they're like 700 calories each!!!!!!

I haven't had one in decades but just to keep this sandwich going, I will go there and have them.
