Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Southside Market Sausage

Every day through January 1 we're giving away a crazy good food item on Serious Eats. Try your luck, and if you win, you'll be eating some seriously delicious food come the new year.

20071204southsidemarket.jpgWhen winter draws near, I start thinking about sausage. (Actually, I think about sausage year-round.) About the best, juiciest, meatiest, just-smoky-enough sausage I know is the sausage the Bracewell family makes and serves at their phenomenal Texas barbecue joint the Southside Market. The Bracewells are a generously spirited bunch, so they've given us ten pound packages of their incomparable sausage to give away as part of the Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway. Win and you can have your very own Texas barbecue sausage holiday party. Doesn't that sound good? Ed Levine

To enter: Tell us what your favorite barbecue joint is.

You have until 3 p.m. ET tomorrow (December 20) to enter. One winner will be chosen at random from among the commenters. Contest winners are limited to residents of the continental U.S., and you can only win once during the duration of the Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway contest. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

the salt lick in austin

urban bbq in maryland

There is no good barbecue in wine country, but I'll go with BarBersQ in Napa - they get points for being mentioned in Michelin, right?

Fiorella's Smokehouse in South Kansas City easily beats the (tough) local competetion.

The Railhead Smokehouse in Fort Worth. There are no frills, jusk kickin barbecue and the coldest beers I've every encountered

Arthur Bryant's in KC... hands down.

Bourbon BBQ in NJ.

There's this crazy little place called Adventures in Barbecue... I wonder if it's still around. I could go for some now!

Dinosaur BBQ on the Upper West Side. I love the fried green tomatoes and the key lime pie.

Louis Mueller's, Taylor, TX

arthur bryant's in KC... definitely

Tom Jenkins in Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Fat Willy's, Chicago, IL. Or Honey One. Or Calvin's.

rendezvous-memphis

My brother's back yard.

Thelma's in Houston,TX. Unbelievably good brisket.

The Salt Lick!

Rudy's in San Antonio

Thelma's in Houston.

I've never been to a bbq joint, so I guess, my house.

Redbone's in Somerville, MA.

Famous Dave's in Fresno, CA

Big Bob Gibson's hands down!! So good.

This one won't top any lists, but I love The Old Hickory House in Atlanta. I'm so homesick for their Brunswick stew.

The Smoke House in Gladstone, MO.

Wall's Barbecue Savannah GA

Yazoo's here in Denver, home of the Bob. Jalepeno stuffed, bacon wrapped chunks of chicken breast on a skewer. Nice rub over and smoked for 3-4 hours. Little hot link on the side and you are set.

Hill Country, NYC

Fatty Beltbuckle's in Rocky Point, NY. They have been going through some tough legal personal troubles but I hope they pull through.

of course North Carolina has the best barbecue there is...preferably from Allen & Sons in Chapel Hill or Bullock's in Durham. And you've gotta have some slaw and brunswick stew with it!

There's this tiny little hole in the wall down in the boonies of Thomaston, Georgia, called "Piggy Park". They do a mean BBQ and Brunswick Stew.

salt lick in austin!

Pleasant's BBQ on the Mississippi Coast.

okay, this is extremely low-brow, but I love Arby's Roast Beef sandwiches with their Arby's BBQ sauce. After that Portillo's is pretty good....

I love the Dinosaur BBQ in NYC. The only BBQ joint in NY to serve Southside Market's Elgin sausages. Hill Country serves Kreutz Market sausages and those are very different from Southside Elgin, TX sausages because they are hotter & more cereal like. Also, Dinosaur is the most consistant BBQ joint around. I love Tony Verdugo's Rendvous for Ribs or Mike Mills Championship for Ribs over any, I love Sonny Bryan's or The Salt Lick for brisket & for pulled pork I just think that North Carolina pig is might tasty. Overall, the Dinosaur has great sides, starters and a great beer list at the fairest prices.

Black's, Lockhart

Porky's Bayside in Marathon, FL. Only because it's the only Q joint in town.

In The City?? Hill Country.

this spring i drove from california to maryland and knew of only one place i needed to stop in texas...

...the salt lick. AWESOME!

and i can't believe someone else actually knows urban bbq in md, it's down the street from my parents house and i love that place too.

I don't know of any good places where I live, so I'll have to recommend my Uncle George's house!

I have to say Kreuz Market in Lockhart, Texas, if I want rubbed pork ribs and great jalapeno sausage. Southside Market and Salt Lick are tied for regular sausages. And if I ever want brisket, I know of only one place that I go, and that's home.

Cooper's llano, tx

Hoggys BBQ in Ohio.

smoque in Chicago

Central BBQ in Memphis! BBQ Nachos and pulled pork sandwiches with slaw and a sweet tea. Nothings finer after a long night on Bealle St.

Pappy's in St. Louis is my local. All around good from the ribs to the brisket.

I don't think I've ever had real BBQ, unfortunately.

Memphis minis in San Francisco

Red Bone in Boston?

Dinosaur BBQ!

Mahuffer's Indian Shores, FL

Blue Ribbon BBQ in Arlington MA (also West Newton MA). In addition to having excellent (for the Northeast) real BBQ (IMHO better than Redbones), you can't beat the Feedbag for 4 takeout combo for value and deliciousness.

Breckenridge Brewery BBQ in Denver. Better than average for this city, cheap, and smoked wings for 30 cents a pop on Fridays? Hell. Yes.

This guy in Lansing cooks out of his truck on Saginaw Street. I have never stopped there, mind you, but it is my favorite BBQ joint because it is the only one around!

I guess Redbone's in Somerville, MA because I can smell it from my apartment and anything that makes me want ribs at 8am is a good thing.

The Salt Lick in Austin, TX

Elmer's It Be Bad, Tulsa, OK

the new barbecue place on chincoteague island- it's awesome

smitty's market / lockhart, tx

The question should be the best joint for what KIND of barbecue?

For North Carolina style (vinegar sauce) pulled pork, Bullock's in Durham, with a side of deviled crab, thank you.

For Texas style (red sauce) sliced beef, Jerry Neel's in Fort Smith, Arkansas and follow with any blackberry dessert in season.

For pork ribs (rubbed, your choice of six sauces on the side), Super Smoker's in Eureka, Missouri.

For traditional style chopped pork (red sauce on the side), Wilson's in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their motto: "Need no teef to eat our beef, need no fork to eat our pork." Excellent!

For burnt ends (smothered in sauce, with fries, on butcher paper), Arthur Bryant's, of course.

For chicken, the smoked chicken (no sauce required or wanted) at Donahue's in Fenton, Missouri. I hear it is no longer served, but I have the recipe stashed away!!!!

For lamb (with fancy sauce on the side), Jack Stack in Kansas City, Missouri.

For sausage (no, sauce, and because you raised the subject), 17th Street Bar and Grill, with multiple southern Illinois locations to serve you. To be eaten immediately after the BBQ potato skins and before the banana pudding parfait.

My favorite BBQ joint is Arby's. Thanks for the giveaway!

Joe's BBQ in Gilbert, Arizona! That is some good BBQ!

Duh! McDonalds McRib!!! Best. In. The. Country.

Hickory Hollow in Ellenton, Florida

Rudy's in Austin

Famous Daves is about the only BBQ place around here too.
There were a few smaller places in Washington when I lived there that
were pretty good.

Gotta say it's my dad's kitchen...super slow-roasted, low-temp beef shoulder with a metric ton of onions and his own sauce added once all th beef's been forked apart. It's my standard.

The Red Rabbit, a small drive-through place in central PA. The barbecue probably isn't world-class, and it's the vinegar-based kind, but memory's a fairly good sauce.

Right now, Dinosaur BBQ, right down the block from me.

Sonny's BarBQue-Gainesville, FL

I don't have a favorite one, I wish I did. I like home cooked bbq.

Famous Daves in Madison Wisconsin!

my minister's house

Memphis Smoke, Royal Oak, MI

Dinosaur BBQ in New York City. Just the coolest place with the best ribs and burgers. But the thing that really makes my mouth water is their potato salad. It the kind of thing I'd like to order by the gallon but it only comes in pints and quarts. Rockland BBQ in Washington, D.C. isn't too bad either.

Bates City BBQ in Bates City, MO

In Buffalo NY it is "Kentucky Greg's"...\

Nobody can top my dad's bbq in his backyard in the summer! The best!

prospectors PA

Locally, Schoepf's in Belton, Southside if traveling in that area, and west of Austin, Cooper's in Llano, all in Texas.

My smoker filled with dry rubbed ribs and butts and many hours of thin blue smoke. There's no real good BBQ around NE Ohio that I have found yet.

I've been to Southside in Elgin and it's pretty good. My favorites are Coopers (in Llano) and the place that unfortunately closed in Bartrum. But for just everyday Bar-B-Q eatin' there was nothing better than the Sonny's Bar-B-Q restaurants in the SE states. My favorites of those were the ones in Brunswick and a little town to the south of there along the interstate as well as the one in Gainesville that we always stopped at on the way back from Cresent Beach picking up a couple pounds of ribs and a quart of THE BEST backed beans in the world. If I win the 10 lbs. I will enjoy them with my family.

Big Bob Gibson's, Decatur, AL

Albert G's, Tulsa

Smokestack in Kansas City

Throw my vote in for Fiorello's in KC as well - every time I walk in, I'm glad my doctor has a higher LDL than I do and can't say a darn thing.

If I don't feel like driving four hours, the Hickory Hut here in Salina does solid work; especially for a building roughly the size of a shipping container.

After having HH and Famous Dave's the same day*, I have lost my taste for the chain barbecue - it's just missing the love.

* The Feast of St. Suidae

Dinosaur, loved it in Rochester, love it now in Harlem.

Sam and Dave's BBQ 1 in Atlanta, GA!

I actually just tried my favorite BBQ joint this past thursday for the first time. It is called Bull's Pit Smoked BBQ. A co-worker of mine heated up some leftovers from there early in the week and it smelled so incredible that I had to go try it. It tastes just as good as it smells and I will be going back soon.

My favorite place for BBQ is Famous Dave's.

There are no BBQ places in rural IA, so I guess it's my kitchen.

Dinosaur BBQ! The one in Syracuse with the bikers and the surly, surly waitstaff and the "superwell". Love it.

Not to many around here, but there is one place called Reo's that doe's a good job.

I'm in Northern California, where the BBQ tends to be a little bit less-than, but I've got to go with local legend Uncle Frank's in Mountain View. Great Louisiana-style BBQ, with some serious bark on that brisket.

Oxford Inn, Royal Oak Michigan

Carter's BBQ in Longview Texas would be hard to beat!

The best BBQ in the world is at a little place in Nacadoches, TEXAS. I am sure that is spelled incorrectly. Once discovered, I could not get enough of it.

Corky's Memphis garrettsambo@aol.com

Sonny's - Port Charlotte, Florida - no surprises-no guesswork, food is always GREAT

My Aunt Emmy's house! I'm not a huge fan of BBQ, but when she breaks out the grill and starts making ribs, I end up with a mountain of bones on my plate and no recollection of having eaten an entire cow.

The only good BBQ in my area is the pig roast at a local church...someone's relative from Memphis comes up with his home-made roaster on a trailer and they do some real down-home cooking.

My favorite all-time BBQ joint was some hole-in-the-wall dive off the beaten path in Memphis. It didn't have a name. If you're in Memphis, ask at your hotel for a BBQ place the local blue collar folks like to go to. You'll get directions there.

Allen & Sons in Chapel Hill

Hickory Hollow. Three locations around Houston. Great food and the prices aren't bad either

King Yuro's, they have the best barbecue rib tips and really reasonable.

The Smoky Pig in Ashland, Virginia

Smoque in Chicago

Famous Daves (only bbq joint we have around here!)

Redbones, Somerville (Boston Area), MA

I can't guarantee it now, 'cause it's been a while since I've been back in that area, but I used to go to Westwood Bar-B-Que in Hartsville, SC. It was sure my favorite back then. Both North AND South Caroline style Barbeque, with all the appropriate fixins. Good price, homey atmosphere too.

My own backyard, after brushing snow of the barbecue!

Bridge City Meats & Eats

Salt Lick in Driftwood TX

My favorite barbque is my uncles. I've never eaten at a barbque place that tops his.

Famous Dave's in Appleton WI

There's a tiny town nickednamed "The BBQ City of the USA" called Lockhart, TX. In that BBQ heaven is a joint called Kreuz Market, where they serve the most mouth-watering BBQ ribs, sausage, brisket and
pork chops!! They use big pieces of secret spices and BBQ them in
giant brick ovens, and they have been doing this since 1900!!! We have since moved from TX to CO, so every Christmas our family that still
lives in TX sends us the most special care package from Kreuz Market!!
Thank you for the contest!
txgigggles@yahoo.com

Bob Sikes Barbeque in Bessemer AL is the absolute best, I go everytime I am up there visiting my family. While at home here in Panama City FL, I go to Smitty's Barbeque, they come in at a close 2nd. Also, all three of my grown sons can do a mean rack of ribs:)

Since we're not in the South, the best local place is Jack's Firehouse in Philly.

I've travelled the south and can spot good barbecue but I am, by birth, a "northwestern yankee". Yes it's possible to get good 'que in Seattle. Two spots come to mind; Pecos Pit in the Sodo district and the OK Corral in Greenwood and West Seattle. Of the three, I find the Greenwood offering suits me best.

i have to agree, salt lick, outside austin

Sonny's in Florida

It is very tragic but we have no barbecue places for miles around our house.

There used to be a place called BBQ Kings in Flagstaff Arizona that was in a gas station, but the owners were from Memphis and the food was amazing. They closed a couple of years ago.

Lucille's, Las Vegas

We only have 1 BBQ joint and its City Barbecue. Its really good but I can do much better here at home. So my favorite joint is in my backyard :) Thank you
tatertot374@sbcglobal.net

we have an Andy Nelson's bbq here north of Baltimore, but there is also this really good amish market only open 3 days a week that has amazing bbq and wings and little roast potatoes. very good.

clem's bbq-port matilda PA

Probably Famou Dave's. Not a lot to choose from in Wisconsin.

Fred Fleming's in Saint Petersburg Fl and there is this place in Dade City FL that I don't know the name of. It had been on the north side of town for mostly take-out, now they are south of town in what may have been a Hardee's or some other fast food place. I've always been satisfied with what they produce.

Dickey's or Rudy's in San Antonio, TX are my favorites, thanks!

Uncle Willie's in Waterbury, CT
