Today's Seriously Delicious Holiday Food Giveaway is a New York Nostalgia package from Russ & Daughters.
I've known Russ & Daughters' Mark Federman and his family ever since I came to New York 32 years ago. When I knew very few people here I used to come to Russ & Daughters to kibitz and just feel like I belonged somewhere. It's a place I still visit for shelter from any storm—and for the company and the Russ family's incredible food. They know smoked fish like very few other people in this world.
The package includes: one pound of Gaspé Atlantic smoked salmon, a half-pound of sliced smoked sable, one pint house-cured herring fillets in cream sauce with pickled onions, one pound of natural cream cheese with chive, eight authentic New York bagels, one pound of old-fashioned rugelach, and a piece of old-fashioned marble halvah. —Ed Levine

It would either be fruit and cheese stuffed crepes or an omelet filled with sauteed mushrooms, spinach, onion, tomato, feta cheese and a little dill. (salmon with dill and a dab of sour cream is incredibly delicious too.)

As a former New Yorker - I adored Smoke (nova) Salmon, with cream cheese, red onions, capers and divine bagels. But now we can have a half-way decent version here in Chicago. So I'm also remembering some "other favorites" : Heavenly potato pancakes/latkes, wonderful whiteifsh salad and mouthwatering (FRESH) blueberry blintzes. Come to thing of it, a visit to old friends (and haunts) in NYC are way overdue...

I love lox and bagels. I used to hate the flavor of lox when I was younger, it seems like the older I get, the more and more I like lox on a bagel w/ cream cheese. Off topic, but another thing that my mom used to enjoy that I hated was pickled herring in cream sauce, but now I really like that too (that is a very aquired tasted I think though)

Russ & Daughter rules. A great brunch starts with queuing up at Russ & Daughters, ordering my choice of smoked salmon, some herring which they slice and add the onion/cream sauce and of course - some bagels and cream cheese. If I am feeling at all thin, I also get about 1/2 a lb of their rugalah. To die for...... I lvoe NY becasue I can walk to Russ & Daughters!!!!!

Whatever it is, it should be picnic style. From mezze to bbq, everything tastes better eaten outside with your hands, preferrably sitting on the ground. Example: While a spicy beef patty in coco bread from Christie's on Flatbush is a great subway snack, it's best savored leisurely reclining in the grass at Prospect Park while splitting a Ting with someone you're sweet on.
