Seriously Delicious Holiday Food Giveaway: Russ & Daughters

20071129russanddaughters.jpgToday's Seriously Delicious Holiday Food Giveaway is a New York Nostalgia package from Russ & Daughters.

I've known Russ & Daughters' Mark Federman and his family ever since I came to New York 32 years ago. When I knew very few people here I used to just come to Russ & Daughters to kibitz and just feel like I belonged somewhere. It's a place I still visit for shelter from any storm. And for the company and the Russ family's incredible food. They know smoked fish like very few other people in this world.

The package includes: one pound of Gaspé Atlantic smoked salmon, a half-pound of sliced smoked sable, one pint house-cured herring fillets in cream sauce with pickled onions, one pound of natural cream cheese with chive, eight authentic New York bagels, one pound of old-fashioned rugelach, and a piece of old-fashioned marble halvah. All sent out Monday, December 15 for overnight delivery and will arrive at your door, as long as your door is in the continental U.S.

To win, just answer this in the comments below: What's your favorite New York brunch food? You have until 3 p.m. ET tomorrow (Friday, December 12) to answer. Winner will be chosen at random from among the commenters. The standard Serious Eats contest rules apply.

PS: If you just can't wait for this contest to be over and want to order now from Russ & Daughters, we have a special Serious Eats promo code you can use for a 10 percent discount. Just mention SERIOUSRUSS when ordering on the phone (no applicable to online orders). Visit russanddaughters.com for phone numbers.

Smoked salmon on baguette

i know im not writing anything new but bagels and lox has to be the best!

A smoked salmon or caviar omlette with sour cream, maybe followed with a slice of chocolate babka - the perfect pick-me-up brunch when you've got a Sunday filled with chores and you're not looking forward to returning to the office on Monday.

BTW, one of my childhood food memories is my grandfather returning home on a weekend morning from Russ & Daughters with lox, etc. Though I hate to betray my age, it was back in the dark ages before the invention of the bagel machine, and therefore bagel production in NYC was not nearly as ubiquitous as it has become. Unless you were lucky enough to live near a bagel place that turned them out fresh, you had to either schlep or make do with hours old bagels that were delivered hours before to a bakery. Though I'm not sure if Russ & Daughters had an in-house bagel baker, they did get their bagels very, very fresh.

Just any brunch in New York would be nice...since I live in Ohio.

Strong coffee with bagel and lox

I heart French toast

Smoked sable from Zabar's. My family first discovered it after we moved to the East Coast in 1969; we knew from smoked whitefish, we knew chopped herring, but had never even heard of smoked sable. It was like a happy mouth explosion! Nothing on earth is more tender and succulent and delicious.

Frankly, any brunch that features the smoked meat trinity (whitefish, sable, and sturgeon) is a lunch I want to be at. Add Nova Scotia lox and chopped herring, and it's NIRVANA.

Oh jeez--did I really say "smoked meat trinity"?? That should be smoked FISH trinity!!
