Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: D'Artagnan Boneless Heritage Ham
Every day through January 1 we're giving away a crazy good food item on Serious Eats. Try your luck, and if you win, you'll be eating some seriously delicious food come the new year.
Holiday season is ham season, so it's only right that we give away some seriously delicious hams as part of our holiday giveaway extravaganza. The nice folks at D'Artagnan, who supplied us with those wonderful organic turkeys for our Thanksgiving giveaway, have provided us with some whole boneless heritage applewood-smoked hams this time around. This is a serious 7- to 8-pound ham that will look great on your holiday table. —Ed Levine

I like a grilled ham sandwich. Fry the ham till it's charred on the edges. Put it on a toasted hamburger bun. Put a little mayo on one side and a whole ton of mustard on the other. Top ham slice with some cheese. Delish!

I am pretty much a ham purist. For a sandwich I like white bread with mayo or hearty rye bread with brown mustard. I don't want other flavors interfering with my ham. I like to grill the ham lightly then transfer it to sourdough bread and top it with sliced Havarti cheese. Then butter the bread and grill the sandwich until golden.

Ingredients:
* 4 large sub rolls, split and buttered
* prepared mustard
* 1 to 1 1/2 pounds sliced ham
* 8 ounces sliced process American cheese
* sweet onion slices
Preparation:
Spread buttered split rolls with mustard; top with folded ham slices, cheese, and sweet onion slices. Place subs under the broiler, about 4 inches from the heat source, and broil for 3 minutes, until cheese is melted.

I use a crusty portuguese roll and add thinly sliced ham and maybe some creamy havarti cheese. Top it with fresh romaine lettuce, tomato and onion. Sprinkle with olive oil and vinegar. Add some cherry peppers for a bit of zing or sweet peppers if I want something less fiery.

My favorite ham sandwich is when you put the ham in a frying pan and cook it till it turns brown and some of the sugars have carmalized. Part way through cooking, you have to put a slice of aged swiss cheese on the ham so it gets nice and melted. That goes on to toasted jewish rye (yeah I know, it seems bad to put ham on jewish rye, but that is the best rye bread) with some nice coarse brown mustard. That is the best ham sandwich I've ever had.

Take a few slices of the ham, that you baked with a brown sugar and honey glaze, plus a pineapple slice from when you baked the ham, and fry them to brown. Toast two slices of regular white bread. Put mustard on the toast. Place the fried ham and pineapple on the toast, along with a slice of American cheese between the slices of ham so it melts and enjoy,

A perfect ham sandwich has a precise formula...first, a thin layer of unsalted butter on both bread slices..then, a thin layer of mayo on the top half and a thin layer of yellow mustard on the bottom slice...cover bottom slice with six bread and butter pickle slices, thin slices of red onion, a lettuce leaf and the ham...thinly sliced and layered an inch thick..top with swiss cheese, preferrably an Emmanthal....and the top slice of bread...slice into quarters..stare at reverently and then eat slowly.

My husband tried this sandwich at a local diner and requested it when we had leftover ham. I wasn't sure what to think but made it anyway. It was REALLY wonderful. Use a hoagie type roll, grill your ham slices and load up with bbq sauce, jalapenos and oil and vinegar. It was really good!
