Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: D'Artagnan Boneless Heritage Ham
Every day through January 1 we're giving away a crazy good food item on Serious Eats. Try your luck, and if you win, you'll be eating some seriously delicious food come the new year.
Holiday season is ham season, so it's only right that we give away some seriously delicious hams as part of our holiday giveaway extravaganza. The nice folks at D'Artagnan, who supplied us with those wonderful organic turkeys for our Thanksgiving giveaway, have provided us with some whole boneless heritage applewood-smoked hams this time around. This is a serious 7- to 8-pound ham that will look great on your holiday table. —Ed Levine

The unbelievably great smoked ham I won from D'Artagnan's, on a fresh ciabatta roll, slathered with Hellman's Mayo, good mustard (whole grain, spicy brown or dijon), a slice of swiss or gruyere cheese, and some crispy romaine lettuce. If tomatoes are in season, it gets a nice slice of that, too. Alternative: homemade bread slices slathered with thousand island dressing, a fat slice of ham spread with warm brie and topped with sliced apples.
My other favorite is an open-faced sandwich; slightly toasted homemade bread with butter, an over medium egg, a nice slab of hot apple-smoked ham drizzled with hollandaise sauce and sprinkled with parsley. Egg on bottom so that the bread soaks up any yolk that escapes.

the absolute best sandwich is anything as close to Potbelly's as you can get...so that would mean some kind of melty white cheese (so I can't remember what they use...) and ham toasted together on a whole wheat hoagie bun, then topped with mayo, mustard, italian seasoning, gardinera, tomato, onion, and a pickle. i love messing with savory and sweet in the same dish. i put all those same sandwich standards (mustard, mayo, onions, pickles, tomatoes) but dress it up a little with some jam or jelly. i've found that grape's the best probably because it's pretty sweet, but i'm sure apple would be delicious too!

Croque Monsieur. I have a cast aluminum croque monsieur (or madame) grill that I absolutely love. I butter two slices of good bread (shaped like toaster bread), stack plenty of sliced ham on the unbuttered side, and tuck in plenty of grated gruyère cheese. I close the grill and put it over a medium flame. The grill has scallop shapes on it, which are seared into the sandwich. If I win a ham, you can be sure there will be plenty of croques messieurs dancing around the Christmas tree!

For an everyday ham sandwich, good mustard -- any kind, really... dijon, whole grain, even honey (sometimes) -- is really all that ham needs, on any bread other than basic pre-sliced supermarket white (it gets too gooey and smushed when you bite into it once it's loaded with that mustard -- ew). Although I do LOVE the hammy breakfast sandwich at 'WichCraft with the butter AND the avocado on a crusty french baguette. You wouldn't think anything needs both butter and avocado, but once you have it, you can never go back.

the ham sandwich gotta start on a good slice of bread- something like fresh rye from the russian deli. supermarket bread in plastic tends to be too salty and have a strange taste/smell due to the "dough conditioner" they put in it to keep it soft. and mustard on one side, and mayo on the other :)
