Epicurious' Top 10 Food Trends for 2009

James Oliver Cury looks into his crystal ball: "'Value' is the new 'Sustainable,'" (seems solid) "Peruvian is the new Thai," (for real?) "Smoking is the new Frying" (as if!), "Regional Roasters are the new Starbucks." (I'll buy that one).

If Chicago's trends are any indication, Indian or Ethiopian is the new Thai. Peruvian may be diverse, but it's still pretty obscure.

in the UK Thai is the new Indian but then weve had Indian food for so long. as for the list its sounds pretty on the money for me apart from the smoking

I also predict pie will be fashionable again as it always is in economic downturns. Cakes will get bigger. The 3 layer cake is back kids.
One pot meals are now chic. Bread and biscuits are in.
All Clad made a slow cooker

@Jerz: If a person can afford an All-Clad slow cooker, s/he is not slow-cooking as a way to save money! Which reminds me, I need to break out my slow-cooker recipe book and get crackin'.

@JerzeeTomato -- right on!

I totally agree with JerzeeTomato! Everything said in that post is what I would have said, except for the fact that 3 layer cakes never went away in my house!

Slow cookers are going to be HUGE again very soon, especially since the newer ones can be programmed to cook in multiple steps, and then keep the food warm. And "homemade" will be the new "gourmet".

Hey, how about "Crock Pot meals are the new 'deconstructed'?"

@Adam -- My slow-cooker is a Rival Crockpot I got at a garage sale for $10, only used once, and it cooks just as well as that All-Clad beauty. It's awesome. There are some very good deals on new slow-cookers out there now, too.

I hope Peruvian doesn't become the new Thai, with a profligation of generic restuarants that offer so-so food in uninspired settings. Ate at La Mar in SF a few weeks ago, and I have to say it was probably the best meal of the year. Even better was that I had Peruvian friends as my tour guides to the menu- they explained what was traditional, what was not. At any rate, every bite I put in my mouth was fabulous!
