Cheese-Filled Bacon Roll, Too Much of a Good Thing?

Is there such a thing as too much bacon combined with too much cheese? Look at this Bacon and Cheese Roll—a log of woven bacon strips rolled around cheese—and decide for yourself. (My answer: "Yup.") [via Holy Taco]

Looking at these pictures it strikes me that there really might be too much of a good thing and that this is where the whole "bacon with and on everything" mania may have jumped the shark. Frying cheese for sale as an appetizer was over the top but wrapping cheese with bacon had to be developed by a cardiologist whose practice wasn't bringing in enough money. That is sick and it's got to be the most unhealthy thing every displayed here. Please tell us that this is a joke that first appeared in The Onion.
steveTV at 7:17PM on 12/18/08
@steveTV, funny you should mention this dish being conceived by a cardiologist, that's exactly how I responded when a friend posted this dish on his Facebook page today. Grease city!
chanterelle at 7:48PM on 12/18/08
All I can say is my new way of eating must be working, because this looks disgusting.
I love bacon and I love cheese, but dang.
tangentrider at 7:48PM on 12/18/08
Haha...I saw this last week. It was kind of gross, so I didn't submit it as a suggested post. Lo and behold, here it is anyway.
Cheese and bacon taste great...but this is a bit much.
wunami at 7:51PM on 12/18/08
Eew ew ew and EW.
emmab at 8:23PM on 12/18/08
Gross. Gross. GROSS. I absolutely LOVE bacon, (its the only reason I won't become a vegetarian), but this looks like it really is just digustingly greasy.
SaltyDonuts at 8:39PM on 12/18/08
looks good to me yummo
sandy89 at 9:18PM on 12/18/08
Okay, it may be a bit much, but think about this (stay with me here):
Take that woven bacon mat, place it into a Pyrex casserole dish, and bake it off until crisp. Drain it, and now you have a tremendous centerpiece. Fill it with cheesy mashed potatoes, garnish with some chopped scallions or parsley, and surround it on a platter with tomatoes.
Who amongst you could not see yourself cutting a wedge of this to the delight of your guests? Okay, maybe the vegetarians, but I challenge all others to resist!
Rhetor at 9:32PM on 12/18/08
I like the weaving concept, but all that bacon weirds me out. Bacon looks SO gross when it's uncooked--all that fat!
runnereater at 9:41PM on 12/18/08
I think it;s because I'm a feen for bacon, but I think this dish looks absolutely beautiful. It screams "Eat Me", but at the same time, it also screams "Heart Attack." Yikes!
lisaxp at 10:47PM on 12/18/08
i actually made this about a week ago, on my roommate's suggestion/demand (he can't cook even the simplest of weaved-bacon treats). it was, for all you haters, delicious--even if it's not possible to eat more than one or two pieces.
it really does make a pretty novel hors d'oeuvre, especially if you drain the bacon adequately (!), so give it a try. and quit being so damn uptight!
xxxombie at 10:57PM on 12/18/08
That is just clogging my arteries just looking at it. Gross.
DavesDreamgirl at 11:15PM on 12/18/08
oh, and i'd also like to remind people that one instance of excess is not fatal or artery-clogging. if you're to the point where two bites of bacon and cheese will cause cardiac arrest, that is indeed very gross.
xxxombie at 11:24PM on 12/18/08
I'd be tempted to roll up a scrambled egg and cheese mixture to fill it out a bit more.
Matcha at 11:43PM on 12/18/08
I think I just threw up in my mouth.
cakespy at 11:44PM on 12/18/08
What if you were to slice off a thin slice to put on top of your burger?
beersnob at 11:45PM on 12/18/08
My heart just stopped.
Marls Barkley at 12:00AM on 12/19/08
I would eat the whole thing.
jgrutza at 12:12AM on 12/19/08
i. love. ur. fotos.
sweet jeebus that's pretty!
kitchengeeking at 1:00AM on 12/19/08
I'm not uptight. Bacon and cheese are great. I just can't imagine eating much of it. Which you clearly agree with.
wunami at 2:30AM on 12/19/08
What about trying turkey bacon maybe not so sinful??
joanpieroni2 at 7:35AM on 12/19/08
Pass the angioplasty.
juliebugsmama at 8:03AM on 12/19/08
He didn't batter and deep fry it?
That would make it a contender for the holy grail of unhealthy foods.
stewmeat at 8:08AM on 12/19/08
I'm still stuck on "woven bacon". Wow.
akk328 at 8:19AM on 12/19/08
That looks disgusting, and I'm a lover of bacon and cheese.
Junie at 8:27AM on 12/19/08
Is Paula Deen trying to kill us again?
csbrown at 8:45AM on 12/19/08
That is a heart attack on a plate.
kimberlymac at 9:24AM on 12/19/08
It's a novel idea. Don't think I'll be preparing it myself, but what if you cut super thin slices and put it on some toast? No more than one piece of bacon per serving. Would it be ok then?
Kerosena at 9:54AM on 12/19/08
Not so much with the cheese filled roll, but I think the bacon weaving is pretty clever.
sobriquet at 9:55AM on 12/19/08
Made this a few weeks ago, but with turkey bacon. Deeelicious, but it cooled off a bit too quickly, at which point it was congealed cheese and cold bacon. Still delicious, so it was all eaten.
radioactivecat at 10:10AM on 12/19/08
Breakfast idea. Order of the layers:
Weaved bacon
Shingled pork roll
Cheese
scrambled eggs
sausage links
roll then slice...Yummy!
weberboy at 10:12AM on 12/19/08
I guess I'm the only one here who thinks this is amazing? I am so making this with eggs in it this weekend. Ooo or a pickle!! Or eggs AND a pickle! And cheese.
em at 10:36AM on 12/19/08
OHHH I get it now. Bacon is delicious AND bad for you. Bacon + some other oily/sugary/unhealthy food product = FUN-NEE!! It's done. Move on.
Weirdsmobile at 10:53AM on 12/19/08
Skip the cheese and wrap the bacon blanket around a beef tenderloin. That would get my husband drooling.
dhorst at 12:22PM on 12/19/08
Don't roll it - use it as a pretty topping for baked beans, chili, nacho dip, a gaggle of baked potatoes.
Or stuff it with butter & Oreos, batter & deep fry and send it to Paula Deen.
PerkyMac at 1:14PM on 12/19/08
Man! Look at that... and you people complain about Paula Deen...
mwainer at 1:36PM on 12/19/08
@dhorst - I like it! And what pretty slices after it's all cooked. You could then serve with cheese fondue, if you had to put the cheese back in...mmm...fondue... =)
akk328 at 2:53PM on 12/19/08
Oh dear lord! Heart attack waiting to happen?

How about stuffing the woven bacon with sausage, egg (scrambled?), tomatoes and mushrooms? Serve with toast and coffee and you have the "full English"!
snowmoonelk at 3:55PM on 12/19/08
Woven bacon is pretty ingenious, but just looking at that photo makes my heart hurt.
nokrapt at 4:04PM on 12/19/08
Yeah. I'd eat this while watching a movie. I wouldn't even slice it, just start at one end like a giant meat Twinkie.
missbhavens at 4:45PM on 12/19/08
This is the coolest thing ever.... I bow to you.
Laura Flowers at 5:31PM on 12/19/08
i wish there was a restaurant i could go to and eat this so i could write about it in my blog: http://peea.wordpress.com/
because that looks like an incredibly woven and thought out bacon dish. it even looks like the bacon is cooked to the perfect crunch.
alphazack at 5:55PM on 12/19/08
so my cholesterol shot up 30 points just looking at this, i'm thinking that a bad thing.....
dozertx at 6:07PM on 12/19/08
This just sounds crazy, but if it were served to several people, it wouldn't be so bad. It's not like you have to eat the entire thing by yourself. I think that is what some of you are forgetting here.
Raiders757 at 6:44PM on 12/19/08
@Raiders757: Oh, but you do have to eat it all. In one go.
..Yeah, I agree, if you cut little slices of this it wouldn't be much worse than a part of some breakfast bacony platter.
roboppy at 6:52PM on 12/19/08
I recently was served deep-fried bacon as part of a tasting menu... That was still the most rediculous bacon appetizer I have seen, but this comes close.
BUT - I love the idea of weaving the bacon... I'm trying to think of how to incorporate that into a different treat for my bacon-loving husband.
peachypear at 7:12PM on 12/19/08
amazing
KingT at 12:23PM on 12/20/08
See, those of you who are not terrified are generally looking at *adding something else to this* that would break up the bacon and shredded cheese. Because as is, kinda ew. With mashed potatoes, OMGYUM!
DTSSer at 5:29PM on 12/20/08
Probably be featuring this on Diners, Drive-In's and Dives.
dmcavanagh at 6:46PM on 12/20/08
almost ALL of you are WAY TOO uptight, and need to relax. Even if for some unseen reason you do decide to make the dish, does that really mean that you are gonna eat the whole thing in one sitting? And if you do make it, there are no laws stating you have to make it according to the instructions. You can use low-fat bacon, turkey bacon, and non fat cheese... bake the bacon so that its not so greasy. Lighten up and relax, its only a dish.
olivexgoobers at 11:49PM on 12/20/08
I think it would make pretty cool sandwiches. Add some lettuce and tomato. Serve it on a whole wheat bun. Not so bad.
Celia at 10:51PM on 12/21/08
I'd add a couple of Italian sausages in the middle of the cheese roll for an artistic note and kick it up to the next level.
Grifola frondosa at 2:14AM on 12/22/08
i'd try a bite, after that i'd have to be taken to the emergency room!
samanthapayntr at 2:30AM on 12/22/08
I think the bacon weave is kind of pretty. I'd like to use it on it's own, to "plate" something, maybe an adapted Cobb salad.
Sandy S at 10:26AM on 12/22/08
On the Smoking Meat Forum woven bacon usually wraps around ground meat that has been seasoned and stuffed with wonderful goodies (cheese, mushrooms, etc.) with various themes - and then smoked to perfect crispy doneness. They are referred to as Fatties, and OMG I need to make one soon it has been too long.
Fanciesmom at 12:53PM on 12/22/08
I don't know if I could fight my gag reflex long enough to actually taste this. I had the same problem with deep-fried hot dogs. There's just something so very wrong about that as well. I would want to try it though--if only a taste. I grew up LOVING peanut butter and bacon sandwiches, I don't eat them anymore for health reasons. Maybe it's just TOO MUCH bacon at one times to get our heads around?
Donnamarie at 2:39PM on 12/22/08
Needs more salt.
Blue387 at 5:30PM on 12/22/08
On a baquette I would die one happy girl.
pjracz10 at 6:57AM on 12/24/08
I've got to triple up on my diaretics just looking at it. dang nabbit that thar looks mighty good to me tho
shipwreck at 11:22AM on 12/24/08
It looks like a heart attack on a plate to me, but my husband says, "Yum".
Roxbury86 at 1:20PM on 12/24/08
I think if you scaled it back a bit, the woven bacon would make a great BLT... As is it looks like a bit much, though not much worse than cheese fries or Outback's Alice Springs Chicken.
SSG Snuffy at 1:51PM on 12/24/08
I thank it's purty!
Rosebud at 2:39PM on 12/24/08
OMG - that's a Valve Closer for sure, but it does look sinfully delicious!
spitfyr323 at 8:13AM on 12/26/08
Those who criticize this bacon roll have not tried it. It is delicious! I made one ... and I intend to make a larger one.
KuyasKitchen at 9:44AM on 12/27/08
@beersnob
Loved the idea of a slice on my hamburger! What's so different than having a bacon cheeseburger??
duncan1205 at 6:57PM on 12/28/08
Humph! none a y'all ever seen a redneck Oreo before? When we add pulled pork and hot sauce, we call 'em s'mores...'cause that's what we want!
hickcrazy1 at 2:34AM on 12/29/08
I think this look delicious!! I love bacon and cheese! Obviously you wont eat the whole roll by yourself. I think two 'sushi sized' rolls wil be great for a breakfast extra :)
Nieli at 9:51AM on 12/29/08
This thing looks awesome!
Check out this sausage recipe...might be a nice balance to all that bacon!
