Red Mango's New Pomegranate Frozen Yogurt

20081112-redmango2.jpg

Red Mango, the frozen yogurt chain that's not Pinkberry, just launched a pomegranate yogurt this week, adding a third flavor to the menu's "original" and "green tea." Oddly enough, Pinkberry is also introducing a pomegranate flavor next week, except it doesn't advertise the POM Wonderful juice as an ingredient, as with Red Mango's version.

For me, the appeal of pomegranate is in the seeds. The crunch, the tang, the way they mysteriously dissolve in your mouth. But pomegranate-flavored yogurt? Does pomegranate even have a defined flavor? (Other than generic reddish, tartish fruit?)

It's not Red Mango's fault that the yogurt isn't overwhelmingly pomegranate; I'm not sure pomegranate even knows what it should taste like. Extracting the "essence" of the fruit, but leaving the seeds behind, seems fruitless. (Ha.) For a more pomegranatey flavor at Red Mango, my approach would be the original yogurt with a side of seeds.

drool .... no locations east of arizona though. why do californians get all the good stuff?

That looks so intriguing! I'm not sure if I would get pomegranate as a topping, but the froyo looks amazing. It's too bad I'm not in CA :(.

I like frozen yogurt and pomegranates. So, I think I would like this (and that's saying a lot since I am an avid 16 Handles fan).

davefaris, there are several red mango locations here in new york city, including one, unfortunately, a few steps from my office on 14th street.

Man, that looks good. We don't have Red Mango near us, but I'll bet some pomegranate arils would be really good on top of some TCBY white chocolate mousse.

Have you tried pomegranate mollasses? That tastes like pomegranate and is used a lot in middle eastern cooking, I bet if you incorporated that into the ice cream it would taste like it.

theres a frozen yogurt place on 5th ave near the empire state building that has had pomegranate flavored frozen yogurt since the beginning of the summer..and its been by FAR my favorite flavor!!

If you care as little about your health as I do, Haagen Daaz has had limited edition Pomegranite Chip ice cream for a while, with dark chocolate chips in it. I love it because the ice cream is tart rather than sweet (almost like raspberry sorbet I suppose). It must be doing well because they have even made it onto an ice cream bar.

Pomegranate was the big thing last year in Korea. It found its way into everything. One of the most popular items was pomegranate vinegar. So that may explain why the Korean frozen yogurt chains are adding pomegranate flavors.

This past year, the flavor craze in Korea has been blueberry. Maybe that'll show up next.
