Oil-less Turkey Fryer

20081121-oillessfryer.jpg

Deep fried turkeys may be delicious, but making them can result in serious burns if you don't follow safety precautions. To avoid having to call 911 because your house is burning down, get this Oilless Turkey Fryer for $199.

The fryer uses infrared cooking technology, which "penetrates meat evenly and seals in juices, resulting in a moist inside and crispy outside without the hassle or fat of cooking with oil." Just add your own propane tank and you're ready to go! [via Uncrate]

Ummm... if there's no oil involved, how is this frying? Shouldn't this be called an infrared turkey oven, or something like that?

@Micheal, I was just having that same conversation with someone about this device. I've seen them advertised since last year. Until someone can tell me why this is better, if I want to cook outside using propane, I think I'll just fire up the grill.

Gee, I guess that if you can't stand the heat ...

No, this isn't frying. I don't like baked or microwaved "fries" much either. Ya' gotta fry 'em for 'em to be right.

Not much to see here. Next exhibit, please.

A faux fryer! How novel. Love seeing something ridiculously expensive that I don't want!

Price isn't worth it. Couple of things - peanut oil doesn't absorb as much as other oils - so use it to fry your turkey. Safety precautions - you bet, this is a concern but all who fry or smoke turkeys should be aware of the risk. i.e. flames plus wood decks don't mix / cold wet turkeys dropped into a pot of hot oil will splatter / too much oil in the pot will cause boil over - thus creating potential flame ups from the propane.

While the product may perfectly good. Until I see it, try using it or eat something cooked out of it, I'll remain skeptical.

At first I was kind of interested (propane-infrared elements can move a lot of heat, cooking a steak in seconds) but this thing is lame. It takes about three times as long as it would to deep-fry a turkey, indicating that you're not getting anything you wouldn't get from roasting in a hot oven.

So how exactly is this frying?

No thanks, I'll stick with the oven. Or, you know, a real fryer.

Is this anything like the air fryers of infomercial fame?

My friend bought one and is going to use it on Thanksgiving. He promised a full report.....I'm skeptical, but I'll pass along his report if you like.

this brought to mind that horrible commercial i just saw for a phone, where the guy didn't get the message that you're supposed to thaw a turkey before you fry it....gives me shudders everytime. my brother successfully fried one last year tho, using alton brown's method. frankly, i'm too chicken to do it myself, but i'd love to eat one. this machine being posted about though, does not look promising. i'll be interested in what your friend has to say about it, 1stmakearoux.

for those doubting Thomas' out there this oil-less fryer is fabulous!!! We have an oil and an infared and after using the oil-less one we will put the oil one on the back burner!!! absolutely No mess or havingto constantly watch tempurature...I always thought you couldn't beat a fried turkey until I ate one cooked oil-less.....even better!!!! No you can't do fries in it but how often do you fire up the turkey fryer just for fries????
