John Legend's 'Nutmeg' Song on Stephen Colbert's Christmas Special
"I wanna nog your egg."
If you watched Stephen Colbert's A Colbert Christmas last night, I'm sorry. That was an hour you'll never get back. Only marginally funny, the show's best bit was perhaps the John Legend performance. The R&B star played a visiting forest ranger singing a song about nutmeg.
Legend: "I'll sprinkle your Christmas cream with my spice supreme
Colbert: "What about all-spice?"
"You know it leaves me cold as ice"
"Cinnamon?"
"Don't even think of putting that in"
"Cardamom?"
"It won't let me drop my love bomb"
The video, after the jump.

I was actually a bit late with it. Saw this last night on TV and wanted to blog it, but who wants to blog at 11 p.m. on a Sunday?

We watched the screening of the special in the studio about two weeks ago. Let me assure you that it was exponentially less funny after waiting in the cold for two hours to get in. Seriously, even now, I have trouble watching the Colbert Show without feeling a little resentment.

Hmmm... I am wondering if you are a fan of Colbert's show normally? I think if you are a fan of his show, it was an extension of the type of special Colbert the Character would love, which made it more enjoyable (but on its own, not the best). But I'm probably not to be trusted, since I can't do Christmas without watching the Andy Williams specials (I'm only 25, I swear it!)... the more singing, the more dancing, the more kitsch... the better.

I totally loved the special. Stephen Colbert shined in all his wonderful ridiculousness like he usually does. Give it another chance!

I'm a HUGE Colbert fan.

I just didn't find the special as funny as the usual mock talk show format. I like him most when he's doing things like "The Wørd" or "Better Know a District" or the mock interviews (like the ones at the Smithsonian, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Spy Museum). I'm usually not as into the guests (unless they're just as sharp-witted as Colbert)—and especially not the musical guests, whose appearances I think are just boring. For me, the Report hit a downturn with the writers' strike, when "The Wørd" became a sometime and not every-episode feature and when he started having short guest appearances in its place. To me, this was too much guest-driven and not enough in-the-field f'ing-with-people driven.

I thought it was hilarious. Why didn't you think it was hilarious? It was hilarious.

Marginally? come on. i did not stop laughing.
bobmcsmith at 9:39AM on 11/25/08
@bobmcsmith: Yes, marginally. I guess like beauty, funny is also in the eye of the beholder. You laughed nonstop, I only laughed a little. Nothin' wrong with that.

"You lick the nutmeg off my ladle..." OMG...hilarious!!!
juliebugsmama at 10:09AM on 11/25/08
LOL! that was awesome. colbert was grooving! and did you check out his boots, ha!
_greenbean at 10:28AM on 11/25/08
I'm not sure it should be so strictly compared to his usual show-- I know it's Colbert and it's his special, but the format was so different and it wasn't political commentary. I thought it was a very funny as a play off of the typical Christmas special.. with guests, a Christmas crisis solved, cheesy songs, and equally cheesy graphics. I'm just sad to see you didn't enjoy it as much as I did, that's all, Adam. Just wishing you had laughed as hard me.
Laurel E at 10:50AM on 11/25/08
OK. You have all beaten me into submission. I will watch it again and give it another chance. Geesh, peeps. I admit that I was watching it only out of the corner of my eye, while completing an unspecified project that required sustained bursts of concentration.
Adam Kuban at 11:04AM on 11/25/08
hooray!!
Laurel E at 12:18PM on 11/25/08
got to agree with Mr. Kuban. I laughed a little, but over all most of the jokes were pretty tossed off, seemed written in a rush.
Don't worry, I'm sure it will air another 40 times in the next two weeks.
intheyearofthepig at 1:51PM on 11/25/08
nutmeg song definitely funniest part of the special.
dmarina at 2:17PM on 11/25/08
HAHAHAHHAAHA
seen it a few times. I can't get enough of him. seriously. i wish i could hang out with Stephen--he'd make the best drinking-buddy!
hungrychristel at 2:40PM on 11/25/08
I thought the wholw show was brilliant. Willy getting busted in the manger, the bear, nutmeg, be patient angel.. and Castello's closing song was actually touching! I have to say that I loved Jon Stewart's Chankkah schtick. We need a Chanukkah special, but who would do it?
chaionlife at 11:42PM on 11/25/08
@chaionlife: Couldn't Jon Stewart do it? And then have Colbert guest on it with a special Christmas song? Heh.
Adam Kuban at 12:36AM on 11/26/08
Adam, I'm on your side -- I don't think it was not on par with his usual show, but I also think it's something that's funnier with a lot of people around. I am willing to bet that if you leave that show running at a holiday party or get-together (providing there aren't too many kids around), people will be lawling.
I think my favorite was the Feist song. Angels telling people to please be patient while they hold? Hysterical.
